Any interest in an R-Type Manga?
hey guys,
I'm thinking about making a free (online) manga about R-Type sometime in the future.
Just wondering if anyone on this board would be interested in something like that?
Obviously the readership would likely come from 2 main sources:
1. People that like R-Type
2. People that like Manga
2B. People that like SciFi Manga
so ... I may as well find out if group 1 has an interest!!
Thanks!

If you're doing this because you have this uncontrollable urge to share a story that you truly believe is great and worthy of the name R-Type, then do it.
Don't write it just to gain a large readership or to attain more status from the community. Do it for yourself. If people like it, they'll read it, if they don't, they won't. If you're comfortable with the idea that nobody may read it--or worse--people making fun of you for it, then go on ahead.
Although I must warn you, you're making a fan-based project off of a Japanese shooter that features a minimal storyline with no characters. You're going to have to fill in all the blanks with your own creation, which will most likely go against the grain of many other peoples' interpretation of what R-Type should be like. This will be extremely difficult to pull off, not to mention you're going to have all odds stacked against you. I'm not saying it is impossible, but you better be damn good.
The best way I believe this could work out is if you turned out to be the guy who was responsible for R-Type itself. Or the art director or something. Then, I'd take you more seriously.

It depends mostly on you as a creator.
You should have plenty of freedom since the series story is anything but deep and complex but I beg you not to make it too much of a space opera.
You should focus on the hopelessness mankind must be facing as the faceless Bydo empire wipes out entire colonies as some self appointed angels of death and the desperate act in sending a single experimental aircraft against the endless horde in the faint hope of shorting things out.

Stick to fanart, manga would be a disaster.

This is all good input guys!
DirtyMonk- Sadly, I have never worked for irem =)
I do have a story in mind, and a lot of the points you've raised speak to either my fears about this project or what I consider my strengths will be.
If it makes anyone feel any better, I do have a masters degree from Syracuse University in Television,Radio & Film.
So I do know just a touch about script writing and media production
Keep the votes coming ... I'll make a decision in the next month or so.

I didn't mean to discourage you, though. The last thing I'd want to do is squander someone's will to create. I don't think this is the best place to get positive feedback for fanfiction. Most people here are so passionate about a given game that anything less than perfection will not be accepted.Rockstar wrote:

And I didn't mean to insult your idea by referring to it as fanfiction either. I used to write fanfiction--call it crap or whatever you want, but it was a great way for me to practice my writing, even though basing your original ideas on someone else's is a dangerous crutch.

Nah, no examples. If I do it, I do it. And if I do, it won't be an attempt to jump through some of your hoops.
The people requesting artwork sound like they would not approve even if I posted something FROM irem =P
As for why manga? I don't even really read manga ... but as some of you have pointed out, R-Type is from Japan, so to me it would make the most sense to use the style of the country it comes from... in order to preserve the "flavor" if you will.
Plus my artwork tends to look manga-ish anyway.
Thanks for the replies guys! Keep the votes coming if you'd like, but I think the conversation has gone as far as it needs to =)

Someone acutally wrote a ginormous R-Type fan novel. I guess people make R-Type fanfiction for the same reason they climb mountains or dive with sharks or eat ice cream really fast.
