Are any of these doujin shooters "arcade" quality? The reason I ask is that if they are developed for the PC platform (running through MS operating system and Direct X) then it would be easy to bring them into the actual arcade through a coin-op hardware like Taito "Type-X" or Sega "Lindberg" or other based on this platform. This is a possible way that these beautiful indie shooters could be released as coin-op games (maybe configured and tweaked accordingly)!
Just a thought!

1) Shoot the Bullet
2) Shoot the Bullet
3) Shoot the Bullet
Uh, disregarding that...
1) Kamui
2) Cho Ren Sha
3) Every Extend
Amazingly, since 95% of doujins I've played are pretty terrible, since I've played soooo many doujins total, it's still really hard to narrow down to 3. I couldn't even include a Kenta Cho game like parsec47. So here are 3 possibly hidden gems doujins that I still find decent (although it's hard to tell which doujins are "famous" or not), and thus possibly actually help someone out.
1) Vacant Ark
2) Nomltest
3) Sky Swimmers' Heaven (demo)
The guy who made Vacant Ark (Buster, who AFAIK is not the Buster who made Akuji the Demon and Guardian of Paradise, those games blow IMHO) also has another good game. It's called Iwanaga and it's an Alien Soldier-like game. I've never heard a single other person mention either Vacant Ark or Iwanaga, so maybe my taste just sucks and these games deserve to be unknown.

warning forever (i find that game so addictive!)
crisis/divider: the time behind to her is slight (a crude minimalist version of raycrisis, read my impression here.)

You should have checked out the Offtopic section...Iwanaga has some beautiful art and is one hell of a game. Discussed here:

I haven't played enough doujins to give my opinion any weight, but here's three I really really liked that haven't been mentioned yet
- Bike Banditz
really pretty hori with some enemy design that kind of reminds me of mega man; make that mega man powered up, pretty cutesy
- Lunaria
Cotton + Cave + Caravan + Cookies = Cool
- Dreampainter (Hishoayu)
A nice well-rounded cute-em-up, love the panda clocks, and a nice mix of aimed fire and static patterns

In terms of sheer technical quality, Melty Blood has to be the "best" doujin. I know the SRK people scoff at MB, but oh well, I suck at fighters so I'm quite enjoying MB Act Cadenza. Ragnarok Battle Offline is also an officially released game, so French-Bread (the devs) has to be considered the most "successful" doujin circle.Necronom wrote:Melty Blood was ported to arcades, though it's not a shmup/stg...

Because it's relatively new? You know what Bike Banditz is, so Lunaria is a little caravan shmup from the same people. (Well, it could be caravan since it's just a demo, I dunno.) You can get it from the French-Bread page if it isn't down like it often is.LGB wrote:Now there is one I have not heard of. How dos that work?
Since I'm talking an awful lot about French-Bread already in this post, I have to say the one doujin I really would like to play, but I haven't, is Lilian Fourhand.
