Any fans of Gemini Wing here?

Post by EddyMRA »

This is one of the most memorable shmups I've ever played.

I first played it in 1988 at a mall arcade, and I was instantly hooked. Very catchy, funky music (later versions of MAME play the music transposed up a couple semitones) and very unique powerup system in the form of Gunballs (the special weapons spheres that follow the player ship like a tail). I'm writing up a strategy guide which I'll post in the Strategy forum later.

I recently got back to playing Gemini Wing, and I've devised many new strategies. Also, after playing so many modern shmups before playing Gemini Wing seriously again, this game is HARD. Most of my deaths come not from bullets, but from collisions with enemies. You'll learn which enemies to hate, like the stag beetle enemies which do a 90-degree turn horizontally when they come at the same level horizontally with your ship (very annoying) and the moths which try to sideswipe you if you come horizontally level with them. Enemies also attack in formations like swinging bars and "circles of death." Some even try to trap you at the bottom of the screen, allowing OTHER enemies to attack you easily.

The Gunball carrier enemy is the source of all your power-ups. Shooting them will You can shoot them down to collect the Gunballs. You can even steal from them, and they can steal from you, kind of like the Option Thieves from Gradius!

Fun game.

This is one of my favorite shmups of ALL TIME. I love the gumball-weapon system.

The bosses really rock too.

I only played this for a few minutes... it seemed neat but I never really got into it. I'll have to give it another chance when I have some time.

Yep, I love that game too. I still remember the day the 1st time I saw it in a local bar. I bought the PCB 2 months ago, just to find out that I could not play it in my cab because the screen comes up upside down !. And there are no dipswitches to inverse it...

You need to fit what's known as a yoke switch.

Gemini Wing

Gemini Wing is another one of those rare shoot'em ups that's good for 2 Player tag play.

We used to love it in the arcade, mainly for the atmospheric music. Always reached the last Butterfly Boss, but didn't do it.

Having tried it again on emulator, I find that it has a huge hitbox that I don't really trust :?

I love Gemini Wing. The graphics are incredibly lovely, and the gameplay is spot-on.

Wow! Reviving a year-old topic!

I've been playing the hell out of Gemini Wing. My best ever playthrough thus far took me all the way to the final boss. I did not die, miraculously, through the first six stages. I had a stock of 4 lives entering Stage 7 (I missed the 1-up because a Bringer left the screen as quickly as it came in). Stage 7 kicked my ass, due to the fact I was not familiar with the obstacles at the time. I had a score of 1.1 million. I play this game on Hard difficulty on MAME, since that was the difficulty I played it on in the original arcade PCB back in 1988.

I even made a SHMUP Treatise on Gemini Wing.

I am coming so close to 1cc'ing Gemini Wing. I will post a 1cc video once I accomplish this feat.

I'll have to pick it up again and start playing it. I've fiddled with it once or twice, but never seriously got into it. But from what you're saying, it looks like a real fun game.
