Dreamcast overheating?

Post by J-Manic »

What's up fellas. I've been doing alot of shmupping on my DC lately, after not having playing my DC in a few months (since June, I think). I notice that lately when I play something, my console gets really hot after only, say, 30 minutes, which is kind of unusual because I don't remember it heating up so quickly before. Could this be a sign of slow death? Or am I worrying for nothing?

Please share your experiences with this sort of problem if you can.

Thanks. :)

My unit is a day 1 Japanese unit (Dec 98 I think). I've never experienced any problems with it. Mind you it is supposedly water cooled. This feature was taken away from later models.

Interesting. Just so you know (if it even matters), I've had my DC since the day after the US launch date. So does that mean it is the same as your "day 1 Japanese unit" ?

What is your model number? There was 9 months between JP and USA release so its doubtful. Mine is a HKT-3000, I just checked it (can tell from bottom of unit).

I've owned 5 dreamcasts and none of them have had overheating problems. Sometimes systems just get hot, but yeah definitely check the fan and try to clean it out a bit if you can.

It's a heatpipe connected to a metal fan. Very nice setup.

The HKT-3020's (US launch) aren't water-cooled.

I've never actually used one of the Japanese launch units, so I don't really know what the story is with them-- but I know that none of ours are.

It's not water cooling. Also, North American kiosk models have the heatpipe.

When I had my Feb 2000 US DC it never overheats (but it was sure was loud as hell with the loading times).

Mine does that as well. Sometimes it makes a constant high pitched hissing noise the entire time during some games. That may be due to all of the back-ups I used to play though.

Well, it looks like I'll be buying myself another DC then, just incase this one dies. I might as well. There only $25 at this spot near me.

The GD-ROM transport makes quite a bit of noise on the DC. Thats normal and all units did that when brand new.

No its nothing to do with the lense. GD-ROMS are just like that.

i have the same thing happening to my dc also with karous. in my memory it didn't heat up so high either. i still need to check if it heats up to the same degree with other games but i didn't get around to yet.
