1cc stories
I 1cc'd Mushihimesama MANIAC this morning
I'd been getting close over the last week or two but making careless mistakes near the end because I was excited, i.e. getting rammed when the stage 5 boss appeared on the screen, etc.
This morning I finally did it on my second run in front of a small crowd that had gathered around the cabinet. There is nothing like the rush of getting that first 1cc on a new shmup you've been working at. Totally made my day. I haven't stopped smiling.
Any recent glory for you?

I haven't 1cc'd anything other than some easy SNES shmups, like Gradius III, Super Aleste, and Axelay. I've been working on Mushi on and off since June, and I can make it to level 4 on Maniac. Also, I can get to that ice level in Parodius Da and level 5 in DoDonPachi. Yeah, I suck, but at least I have fun with the games, and that's all that matters.

I'm not incredibly familiar with the last half of stage 5, so naturally the screen was almost constantly full of purple patterns, and I put on a pretty impressive dodging show trying to conserve my last bombs for the boss. That definitely helped the overall reaction, a couple people looked pretty excited. I guarantee no one was excited as me, though. I took a picture of my score with my cellphone afterward, with the satisfying "STAGE: ALL/CONTINUE: 0," and my adrenaline was still pumping so much that my hands were shaking.overkill55 wrote:Just wondering but did anyone realize the magnitude of what you'd done? Can you get to stage 4 without considerable difficulty? Is there any particular section that you're stuck on? The first half of stage 4 is a big difficulty jump from the previous stages. My advice is to work on scoring 40,000,000 and getting the 1up from the end of stage 3 so you have plenty of lives with which you can practice and learn the final two stages.Milkgoat wrote:I can make it to level 4 on Maniac.

What seems like ages ago, I was out and about on my birthday. My friend and I decided to hit a local arcade where I was living at the time, so my parents drove us over to this big, multi-tiered arcade. At this arcade, they had Darius in all it's triple-screened glory.
Now, I'd been there a bunch of times over the years I'd lived in that city, and I'd played several games of Darius each time I was there. I thoroughly enjoyed that game. I'd never beaten the game before though, and on my last token, I decided to give it another go. I played through the game, and was doing pretty good when my friend came over and told me that my parents were ready to go when I was. I told him I was on my last token, and I wanted to finish the game. So, he stood and watched as I made my way through the remaining two levels, reached the final boss (I think it was the green seahorse), and actually beat the game. I stood proudly as I watched the ending, and put in my initials.
When we left, it turned out to be the last time I'd ever set foot in that arcade, as we moved a few months later. That arcade would also prove to be the only place I'd ever see the Darius arcade game. Looking back, it was sort of like a bittersweet birthday present.

Haha that's awesome, that last bit sounds so dramatic, like the text they show at the end of 'real story' movies. :pThe Coop wrote:When we left, it turned out to be the last time I'd ever set foot in that arcade, as we moved a few months later. I did Mushi Futari: Maniac back in the summer, which was my first Cave 1CC achieved with 100% arcade play (and I think I only continued like 2-3 ever on it). Got Death Smiles, which was easy if you don't select Rank 3 all the time. Also popped in Magical Drop F and 1CC'ed Taisen mode which was WAY easier than any arcade version.
Working on an All RANK3 Death Smiles, but I rarely play much of anyting. I'm going to be pretty tied up until about the middle of next month.

my first time thru DDP i was like 8000 points away from making the loop, i have never been so pissed off at a 1CC before.
other than that my fave 1CCs are the ones with a crowd, either at conventions, fairs or in arcades.
you feel so damn awesome when you clear a game (usually takes total focus on the game) and look up and see a crowd of 15 people standing around you staring at the screen

For me it has to be Espgaluda, not that I have many to choose from.
Anyway, I was living in Japan for 3 months about two years ago and had only played Esp Ra. De. and Mushihimesama from Cave before, so naturally I was excited about being able to try all these great games like Espgaluda, Ketsui, Guwange etc.
The one I fell for the most was Espgaluda and I pretty much played it daily. Meanwhile, Espgaluda II was almost ready to be released and I was psyched that I would get to try it out before I went back home. I still hadn't finished Galuda though so I was a bit worried that II would make me lose focus and stop me from getting my first Cave 1cc.
Luckely however, the day before Espgaluda II was being released, everything fell into place and I managed to beat the final boss, with an extra life to spare and all. Now that's great timing! Of course I had a very big crowd too, I'm guessing somewhat decent western shmup-players attract a bit of extra attention because while I did manage a 1cc, I didn't really play all that great.
Later on I got the game for my cabinet and have finished it plenty of times. It's funny how easy it is to 1cc a game after you've done it once. I pushed my score up to about 45mil and managed to finish the game without losing a life, easily my biggest shmup-accomplishment.
Another thing that makes this 1cc very dear to me is the fact that it was all made on a cabinet in Japan meaning every single try cost me 100yen or 50yen if I was lucky. While that may sound silly, it makes it more special to me.

Did Stahlfeder and Gaia Seed both 1cc at the same day (both on PSX). Actually for both games I played the *cough* burned *cough* copy just to see if these games were worth my time actually buying them.
They didn't. After my first go on Stahlfeder I 1cc it. After my second time trying out Gaia Seed I 1cc it.
Both really easy games I must say. Thanks goodness I didn't pay for a dime for them because I would be pissed if I actually pay for them.
Lets see, other 1cc stories:
Twin Cobra II: I got to the last boss and I beat it. The funny thing is that I didn't know it was the last boss of the game. I played it on MAME to see if it's worth my money to get the Saturn version and it wasn't.
Gun Frontier Saturn version: Not a happy 1cc story. I didn't like the Saturn port because they gave you too many extends (which wasn't even in the arcade version at all). So the game with auto-fire was a walk in the park.
U.N. Squadron arcade: I was so shocked when I got to the last boss. I was flying with Shin and his Tigershark with those Super Shells as a secondary weapon. I was at the last part of the game and if I get hit again I would die. Well I keep firing those Super Shells and shooting at the same time and the last boss was destroyed. Sweet.
Super R-Type: My very first 1cc when I was six. I don't remember that much but I played it for weeks and keep 1cc it everytime I play it.
M.U.S.H.A: Two days after I got it in the mail I 1cc it. Love the music, and the last boss was a bitch.
Sylphia: A WTF 1cc. Second time playing this on Magic Engine I somehow able to 1cc it. $200 for this game, please.
Lords of Thunder: One of my personal favorites 1cc. Volume was all the way up (this is the PCE CD version we're talking about here, not the shitty Sega CD version) and the lass boss kicked some ass (and the music too).
1941 Counter Attack: My words after 1cc it "I can't believe it too me that long to 1cc it. But it was fun at least."
Twin Cobra Genesis: "Take that bitch!"
Twin Cobra PCE: "Music and graphics are better, but easier."
Twin Cobra Arcade: "I think I'm getting too good at this."
I think this is it for now.

never happened to me because I'm only playing @home on my computer
although I did have a small crowd watching me play back when I played Metal Slug 2 but clearing that wasn't a big achievement @_@

A few months ago I 1CC Blazing Lazers. What's weird is that I hadn't played it for some time. When I first bought it, I played it like mad hoping to get a quick & easy 1CC, but that eluded me for about 2-3 months. I got busy w/ other life stuff & didn't come back to it for over a year (at least in console form). One day, while my wife was messing around on the computer & actually let me play a game, I plugged it in, figuring I'd get back on the horse. Lo and behold, my first try I had a 1CC!

It's not technically a 1cc.... cause the game has no ending..... but at Katsucon last year in DC, they have this arcade room always set up, with alot of retro games and whatnot. And I got to level 38 in Robotron while a buncha people were watching me, I remember, one guy kept wanting to comment on what I was doing on-screen, and this other guy kept saying "be quiet! You'll ruin his concentration!" Which in itself was distracting, lol..... Then he completely freaked out when I finished. I think I had around 500,000 points on that one.
I did that in costume, too (Im always in costume at these), so people would recognize me later on and comment on it.
I've never again been able to quite match that score.... usually I go down around 250,000 and yell at the screen a bunch.
For actual 1cc's, there's Giga Wing.
All I'd wanted to do on that particular night was get a nice replay of me beating the actual Giga Wing itself, to show to a friend. I'd never even reached the Stranger before this point. But the replays kept screwing up, and by the time I figured out WHY, I was amazingly pissed off.... so on my final attempt, I got to the Stranger for the first time..... having only used one bomb to get there.... and then actually beat him. I was dumbfounded.
Now Im working on a double-play clear of that game..... boy does THAT make things more interesting, lol..... And my goofy controller setup means that I have to always have both shields go on simultaneously, cant do them seperate, nooooo.....
Cant remember much in the way of other 1cc's. Not for the HARD games, anyway.
There's doing the 1-life clear on Gradius 3 on SNES, but that's so blasted easy I dont really count it....
And stuff like that.
Though, I AM very close to 1cc-ing Mushi's Arrange mode. Just that ONE boss stands in my way.
EDIT: Oh, and also annoyingly close to clearing DOJ's Death Label mode. So close to beating that damned bee..... gah!

I just, not 5 minutes ago, 1CC'd Ikaruga for the first time. I'm in an amazing mood right now. This is my first serious 1CC, in any game, ever (I'm not counting Raiden 3 on super-easy mode or Triggerheart Exelica on easy mode, since anyone can beat those things). I've been playing on and off since I got the game in May, and I've been getting close lately, but I tend to take weeks at a time from playing, and I just picked it back up this week after a long hiatus, which makes it all the more surprising to me that I could do it.
Yeah, not a great story, but you guys understand that I have to tell someone about this

Lots of good fuckin' shmup players here, it's quite astonishing, especially when I compare to myself.
I don't have any 1cc stories, unfortunatly. But, I have the vague feeling or sense of deja vu that I recently did 1cc something, like in a dream. But in reality, thinking, I really haven't. I should get my ass back on Mushihimesama...
Cool stories.
1cc's and achieving high scores are what shmupping's about at its core (especially if yer at the 'cade.. whee,) I think. The sense of satisfaction is unrivaled in other types of gaming, I think fighters might come close, though.
I am fairly proud that I took down U.N Squadron on the SNES on hard mode though. Not 1 credit... but I did it within the alotted continues.

Having lived right through the golden age of arcades I have a lot of 1CC stories.
The best of the bunch for me was 'The Holloway Rd Incident':
There were three areas/arcades where good shoot'em up players used to play; always at the top was Casino Arcade in Central London and just outside were Ollie's Holloway Rd Arcade and the Finsbury Park Arcade.
So
Not long after the arcade release of Truxton/Tatsujin I went round the Holloway Road arcade and started a game of Truxton. At the time I didn't realise how many people had gathered behind me - 40
. I 1 lifed the first loop and didn't fancy a marathon that day so I gave the rest of the lives to someone in the crowd. This was the first time I met the shoot'em up brothers ARC & ARM .
I think this was the largest naturally occuring crowd (round 1 machine) that I can remember.
One evening in the late 80s we visited the Finsbury Park arcade where local player UBN was playing a game of doubles on Flying Shark. At this point in the night he was at 12,000,000 on the 24th loop
. It was mad to watch, the bullet streams coming down at him after the Last Boss Plane were so thick that the screen was flickering heavily, he was doing tiny taps across the screen, scraping round hundreds of bullets.
A similarly mad multi looper was watching Mills 1 lifing to the third loop and beyond on Raiden DX. I seriously want to put that board back in the arcade so that future London Meet attendees can watch.
Another crowd gathered round me on the large screen Darius II Sagaia machine in Chinatown. One of the guys behind me announced to the crowd; "Who's gonna break out the Popcorn?"
