Daioh! topic

Post by Gungriffon Geona »

well, in an odd thought I've been playing this game alot lately. when I first tried it, it pissed me off greatly. however coming back to it I'm starting to see my problem was I sucked at the time I last played it.
Now, to be honest I always get a rather unique feeling from this game. it seems to cross between Radiant Silvergun in it's odd 3-weapon type 3-bomb type arsenal, and Raiden in... well, alot of the rest of it. (aside from the rather interesting art direction. Considering the company that made it also made Strike Gunner, it feels rather nice to have a style I liked back.)
it's a standard afair of using three weapons (wide fire, homing lightning, and missiles which seem to be an overpowerd combination of straight fire and homing.) at any given time to attack your enemies, which almost always are really numerous. when they do fire at you, fire fast aimed shots at your ass. (no really, half the time the enemies fire when they're at the bottom of the screen.)
now, unlike how I felt from either Raiden or RSG, (in the first case slow and dumbfounded, in the other case overwhelmed by everything, even the controls) I get the feeling the game is rather well paced, and isn't totally overwhelming as far as OMG BUTTONS goes. though the real issue is that by the point of the second level boss the difficulty starts to rise dramatically. I get the feeling that there is some sort of rank system that is based upon what weapon you use (either by rank increase from simply firing a weapon alot ala garegga, or just using one weapon more than the others.) or based upon how long you can stay alive. one run I managed to live up until stage 4 before getting shot down finally, and I noticed the enemy shots were getting alot faster than when I would die midway through to that point.
I really find it truely annoying, though, how I can't figure out just what is my ship's hitbox. sometimes I can scrape by bullets, other times the slightest touch sends me exploding. I also am not very fond of how using the missile during bossfights (where bullet sprays tend to be more than usual) makes good chunks of the screen flicker like mad, thusly making it difficult if there's a shot hurdling towards me.

So like yeah, what do other people think about this game? I like it well enough to attempt to 1CC it. (which I'm getting rather close to actually doing. the only problem is the stage 3 boss and the stage 4 boss tend to maul me during most runs.)

edit: fixed name misspelling.

You have to spell it right first. Daioh. Like they taught us in English class, A before I except after Rad and before nt Silvergun.

oh.

well the last topic discussing the game itself is from 2005, so I think going back that long and ressurect topic would lead to more piss-fests. (since no one can make up their mind whether to post in old topics or post new ones.)

It seems that bloodflowers made up his mind:

Zach has something to say to this, too:

You can switch the region of the board to japanese by connecting a trace.
I think it plays great that way.

Or use a 2-pin header and change the default USA region to JPN region on an American Sammy produced Daioh PCB... ^_~

playing the JPN settings kills the overall fun of it to me. I rather like the fact I can have everything available to me in the USA version of it, because it feels like a less frustrating RSG system most of the time. in the JPN version I feel like I'm playing another Raiden clone, except this time the weapon choosing is botched.

That's the only thing I wish they would have changed about the Gekioh: Shooting King US release (Shienryu) - that they would have added a mode w/ weapon cycling instead of weapon choosing. I really like the vulcan cannon a lot, but sometimes I enjoy using the lightning weapon, and at times the power of the missile weapon is pretty handy. Being able to cycle would have made Shienryu even more awesome.

I really think both games are average.

Hell the SS port of Shienryu has sprite flickering and that's so annoying! :x

I would like to play a version of Daioh with a flying Chiyo Chan. Yeah, I know Azumanga Daioh is unrelated and Daioh means something like "Great King", but I still would love to see an Azumanga Daioh Daioh.
