Is any monitor going to work for TATE?

Post by koda »

So, I'm just curious. I'm looking for a monitor I can keep up on its side for Ikaruga..

I have my Dreamcast hooked up to my 32'' tube TV right now, and I tried flipping that thing on its side-- it was badass for the five minutes that it worked, but then the top started getting severely discolored, so I stopped and pulled it down.

I'm getting a second Dreamcast soon, and it's going to be devoted to Ikaruga so I'm looking to pick up a cheap used CRT monitor. Obviously the TV wasn't meant to be up on its side like that, but will a monitor have the same problem? I was hoping to be able to have the display up on its side permanently.

It seems like I could get a 21'' monitor for like $10-$30. Will these work?

Thanks in advance.

It depends on the shape of the monitor's case and presence of adequate ventilation. Also, discoloration is normal when turning a monitor because you're changing its orientation to Earth's magnetic field. Degaussing and time will fix it (don't trigger an internal degauss coil a bunch of times in a short timespan...).

Oh, all right.. the discoloration will eventually go away?

Just trying to learn more before I proceed.

Here's what I do.

I turn off the TV, wait 20 mn, move it on the side, wait 20 mn again before turn it back on and I don't get any problem with the color. I did that with many TVs as well as a few monitors over the years and I never had any trouble.

It's because the degausing coil, which activates every time you turn on the TV before the picture comes on, gets hot and is on a circuit that needs to cool down before it's activated again (by turning it on again).

so it could be 2 minutes, could be 20 (couldn't be longer than 20).

i've got a 21" viewsonic monitor that goes on its side quite nicely. as soon as i turn it sideways, the screen gets all green & purple, but then i just hit degauss once and it's fine again.
