Your past and present ideas for a shmup?
I tend to get many ideas for shmups many of which are never realized.
This thread is meant to be a sort of shmup idea discussion thread.
I had this idea while driving home from the store.
Title: Valkyrie: Limbs of Yggdrasil
-You take the role of one of 3 battle maidens who are sent out to gather souls to fight alongside Odin in Valhalla. The firing types differ between characters. Something to the effect of a 5 way bow, a Odin's piercing lance and Thor's Hammer.
-When an enemy horde is destroyed all the souls begin to fade. The character must recruit the fading spirits before they disappear by flying to them.
-Bosses would be main Gods in Norse Mythology. You would have to defeat them as a test of your loyalty to Odin's cause.
-Bombing would be do damage to all on screen enemies and also remove all souls, in this way you would not want to use it unless forced to.
-Not quite a danmaku in the early levels but danmaku design by the last boss.
-The end boss would be Yggdrasil or the "World Tree". The player would see all of their collected souls fly into the limbs of Yggdrasil and the tree would have beefed up versions of previous boss attacks.
-It would be play tested many times to ensure that all souls could be collected on every level. Nothing would be left to chance. The time it takes to get the soul from destruction of the enemy would effect the points awarded.
For graphics I envision large modern bullets with lower resolution detailed sprites.
Just a thought I had tonight. What are your ideas for new shmups?

-A game that's one long boss fight. Some popcorn enemies might appear but you still fight one guy. Kinda like Cyvern 2nd stage taken to the extreme.
-Hippie shmup. With fractal backgrounds, deformed enemies, hypnotic bullet patterns, psytrance soundtrack, and shiva as final boss.

I know I'm not the first person to bring it up, but the whole Star Wars style would fit in great in a shooter. It could combine a few different sub-genres; vert stages where you're in an X-Wing for the trench run, hori stages with minimal or no terrain where you use an A-Wing, and arena stages where you have a snowspeeder and wrap up AT-ATs (I heard there was a PD Amiga game like this, but I've never found it).

- You're simple anti-virus coded ship which's goal is to take out master virus from master computer which controls whole world in AD 2489
- Power level of the ship is determined by experience, you can gain experience a lot if you do chaining enemies like in donpachi or dodonpachi
- Your ship has 8 power levels
- You have 3 weapons: Red Spread Data (usual spread weapon), Blue Piercing Data (Just strong ray of laser), Green Cover Data (Shoots single stream of fire at front while it can cover whole your back if powered up fully)
- You change your weapons with a third button.... first button does fire, second does bomb whole screen
- 8 Stages.... there's even TLB "Hidden Love" to fight him you must be powered up fully at all weapons which isn't easy goal
- Everything feels so cybernetic ala Rez

I had this idea for a shmup that I remember posting somewhere on this forum before. Lifeforce-ish theme where it all takes place inside a human body. Some omnipotent force is challenging your will to fight for your life, sends you back in time at a microscopic level inside your mother's body, probably leading up to the womb, fighting off parasites that are trying to prevent your own birth.
Tons of bullets, small hitbox... I'm thinking maybe infinite bombs, but bombing, while protecting your ship, would affect the condition of the body so you couldn't do it too often. Other than that, I like the firing in Nomltest and would probably adapt the same for this, two modes of fire, hold em both down for a straight on DDP death laser that also slows your ship.

I hate all of you because this thread could be great instead of a giant joke.
ironically I was cooking up a sorta game based around teleporting to chain enemies (kinda "dash through a line" etc.) or help chain medals/score items. (like if you were moving in the direction of a medal and pressed the teleport button it'd move you to that medal) of course you'd want to set up a guage so the player didn't abuse the hell out of this. say, make the medals how you recharge the guage, and then make medals fairly scarce or strategically placed along the stage.Dandy J wrote:i had this idea for a shmup where you can teleport

-as the game continues both trance meters will fall more quickly, and will no longer fall at the same speed.
It will be necessary for the player to adjust his or her timing accordingly.
I don't know how fun this would actually be, though

It has 2 'teleport' mechanisms: A 'stargate' in the playing field and a dedicated 'warp' button.
The stargate teleports you to the nearest abducted humanoid; helps you to chain humanoids and build up the pseudo-medal (humanoid) multipliers. It's also a handy escape mechanism...
The warp button randomly teleports you within the playfield. But it has an associated risk where you can re-materialise directly onto an enemy or bullet and die!... It comes in handy sometimes as a last resort to escape from danger or to keep your chain going (by avoiding the landscape) etc...
I'd actually like to see a 'true' successor, Stargate 2, that also keeps it's 2-way control scheme, with 'reverse' and 'thrust' intact; and fast horizontal gameplay... An 8-way control scheme doesn't have the same 'feel'; nor let you use the same techniques...
EDIT:
And your 'guage' is already present in Stargate: It's the number of humanoids remaining...
