Assistance required, best 2d shmups for PS2,GC,Dreamcast,pc

Post by petrolhead »

What are the best shmups for my consoles?

I prefer the old R Type or 1942(horizontal or vertical) style in 2d.

I have'nt had these consoles for long and need your recommendations.

All are PAL (UK) consoles.

ps:-
Bloody great idea to have a shmup forum.

pps.
I was always the kid that went straight to R Type as soon as i got in the arcade, while the others were playing virtua racing(4 seater).

there are loads of great PAL released PS2 shmups

verts -

1945 1+2
gunbird special edition (gunbird 1+2, inferior to dreamcast version)
Psyvariar
steel dragon EX

horizontal -

R-type final
gradius 3+4
gradius v

all of these should be less than £10 new (apart from the gradius games which are only a bit more)

Pal-wise imo

PS2 - Gradius V

GC - Ikaruga I've heard

Dreamcast - my dreamcast collection has been neglected. I'm sure there'll be much mroe helpfull replies to follow mine.

Btw, for shmups Asian ps2 is the way to go.

Dreamcast wise

Best ones are

Ikaruga
Border Down
Mars Matrix

But they are all rather good! only weaker ones in my opinion are twinkle star sprites and chaos field and psyvaria 2.

If you want detailed opinions pm me.

Someone will race in to defend tsp soon.

EDIT: Sorry I forgot you are after pal shmups. Dreamcast wise all you can get pal are giga wing 1, bangai o. and gun bird 2. cannon spike if you wanted.

Pal Saturn: Parodius deluxe
Galactic Attack
Darius 2
Darius Gaiden
In the Hunt.

I've got 1945 and Psyvariar so far for my PS2(EBay-waiting for a delivery). :D :D

So it's R Type Final or Gradius V (ps2 pal). Which one is the best? :?:

And i'd better get Ikaruga for my Gamecube-it appears that there are hardly any shmups on Gamecube(pal).

Most of the Dreamcast games available are overpriced due to their rare/classic status, when i can get better games for less on GC or PS2, i wonder if it's worth the money.

DC:

Ikaruga for your more pattern based/memorized yet manic shooting.

Zero Gunner 2 for more old school shooting but with a nice 360 move.

I can't comment on GC, no shmups that I own for it, and PS2 I'd get Dodonpachi DOJ. Never played it but it is supposed to be the most well designed and unforgiving "old school" shooter ever. I plan on getting it and an import PS2 after I (finally) get my tax refund.

Just get a DCX or utopia and experience the imports.

A DC-X is a boot disc which lets you play pretty much any import on your Dreamcast with ease and no need of modding (obviously). Or you can download and burn a utopia boot disc which is basically the same thing. You just put the boot disc in, turn the system on, wait for it to load a bit, take the disc out and put your import game in and you are good to go.

I have just ordered a Freeloader disc for my Gamecube.
So import GC games are on the menu now.

Where can i download the 'utopia' files from?
Will i be able to write the disc with my cd-writer or does it require a dvd-writer? What format does it require?

You can also download a legal demo of the Gameshark CDX Demo boot disc - it only has 2 or 3 cheat codes enabled, but let's you play imports perfectly. It's a really small download, too. Just do a search for "gameshark CDX demo download" and I'm sure you'll find it. The official version gives you all the cheat codes and such... but that's not such a big loss for being able to play imports.

CDX is the way to go, boot disc wise. It'll work in VGA. I use the CDX download for my un-modded DC.

I've downloaded the cdx demo, i'll burn it to a cd tommorow.

Will this allow me to play jap and us games on my pal Dreamcast?

What about the output? i use an rf adapter, my tv works fine in 60mhz mode, i tried it with my PS2 which also has an rf adapter.

What do DC fans love so much about Mars matrix, I can't stand the game.

For some reason I also just can't take the Gigawing games seriously.

DC by a mile.

Remember to burn the CDX at 4x speed or less, shouldn't take too long since it's a small amount of data. Any higher and the dc *might* have trouble reading it.

If you use a VGA or better display, which you should. Otherwise, it doesn't really matter much.

Well everything about the game just bores me. The weapons are not at all interesting (Apart from the special weapon, that's quite cool).
The action is well, okay, the soundtrack is awful, and to top it off, god the game just looks damn ugly to me. I hate the Boss/Ship/level designs, I hate the dull colours..... Have I missed anything out......

Those are just my opinions btw, but you asked.

got 1945 today and had a couple of hours on it, pretty good, my only gripe is that it only supports the direction bottons and not the analogue stick(PS2).

Nah, just Rob. ;)

But, as with any other shmup, Takumi's stuff is a matter of taste, so if you give it a good solid try and don't like it then you don't hafta feel ashamed of it...just don't start flaming people who do like it, or else you're cruisin' for a bruisin'.

AWESOME.
