I've been trying out doubleplay on Viper Phase 1 (damn this game is fun!), and wonder if it would be considered cheating to use foot pedals for the buttons, so that way I don't cramp my hands trying to move the joystick and hit buttons at the same time?

Of course its much cooler to see someone walk into an arcade and pull of a doubleplay with standard 2 player control panel.
That's a really good idea :)

Finally, a use for my steering wheel!

I've done this before on MAME'd shmups; except I just configure player 2's controls to be the same as player 1's. Didn't work too well.

I have a PSX-usb adapter, so maybe I'll try a "Dual-Shock" dual play arrangement. Sounds like fun!

RAIDEN3 double replay on YouTube.com

Post by Mills »

There is a Raiden3 double simultaneous replay by a top japanese shumper on YouTube.com. its only 1st stage completion but judging by the trailer, the later stages (stage5 onwards) look interesting. im sure someone will find a way to upload it somehow.

Hmm, I should try it sometime? But how to keep the fire button held down? Not set to L for each hand is it?

Question to hd2dj07 (or anyone else who is playing Mushi doubleplay). Are you swapping the C and A button wiring on your control panel? Otherwise its a very uncomfortable stretch to manuver the joysticks while holding down C.

grow another two arms, you'll wow the audience in more than one way.

from the looks of the hand positioning, it does appear to be quite challenging, and painstaking on the hands afterwards i bet. should give this a try.

dual play is an interesting way, i used to sync two controlls into one and control both ship, but problem rises when trying to get a power-up and both ship is merged, only one would get it. if i use a different speed ship, both would be out of sync and even harder to manage.
VicViper Vs R9, will the eternal struggle between them ever end, only time will tell

Double play on Raiden 3 make it a lot more enjoyable. I can't even play the game in Solo mode anymore, it's just too boring after playing it on double mode.

I wish more games had this option.. the big deal really is the single scoring and life counter... those features make it better than just playing 2 players and controlling both ships.

Also, I believe the arcade version of Raiden 3 also had double-play mode, and it probably only costed one credit...

So, I got into this recently myself....

Raiden 3 did it for me, got me started on it, and now Im doing DoDonPachi and Giga Wing in DP as well (thank you MAME!)

I got to stage 6 in Giga Wing earlier, and in DDP Im up to the 4th boss. If I can just NOT FORGET about those damn tanks in the first part of that level, I should be able to get through it without too much trouble. MOST of my deaths were in that section there.

This isnt QUITE as hard as I thought it'd be (once I got used to it), and by golly is it ever FUN.

Im gonna try for a 1cc in Giga Wing, if I manage it I'll somehow put a vid together.

For those using Mame, what kind of controller setup do you use for double play? Personally i can only imagine using the keyboard, seems manageable. Use WASD & IJKL for movement, and something like F & J for firing, with bomb at C & M or X & "," maybe? Keyboard symmetry probably does wonders for double play, especially comfort-wise.

I just cant figure those that use the keyboard to play these at all.

Just cant do it myself. I need a D-pad or at least a stick.

For my own setup for doubleplay, Im using a 360 controller, which makes one part of it a little odd....

Most of these games, like, anything made by Cave, will have a button for shooting, and one for bombing. And the shooting one also does something different if you actually hold it down. Now, my hands just tire so fast from hitting the same thing 80 zillion times, so I have a program to do that for me.

So my IDEAL setup (likely possible on a PS2 controller) would be L1 for normal fire on left ship, L2 for "held" fire. And same for right ship. D-pad for left ship movement, and right stick for right ship movement. Assorted face buttons for bombs, whichever is most comfortable.

Thanks to the 360 controller's apparantly unusual "triggers" though.... which Windows has a few issues with.... it dont work that way for me.

I have the left bumper controlling rapid-fire for BOTH ships, and the right trigger controlling the "held" mode also for both ships. There just isnt room on it to separate them, because if both triggers are used at once, neither of them is recognized, oddly.... I know WHY it is, but it's a stupid reason.

The bombs at least are separated.

But it's a minor restriction really, and one I've gotten used to for the games Im playing in this fashion.

For the lazy, i scrounged up VTF-INO's Ikaruga videos that are on youtube, with visible hands where possible to show ppl how the joysticks can be held comfortably.

Chapter 1: [hands]
Chapter 2: [nohands]
Chapter 3: [hands]
Chapter 4: [nohands]; midboss [hands]
Chapter 5: [hands]

On a separate note, the link to the Ketsui doubleplay torrent seems to no longer work. Anyone have a new link to it or am i doing something wrong?
