Everyday Shooter announced for PSN

Post by Thunder Force »

Newsweek has published an article confirming the celebrated GDC 07 arena shmup "EveryDay Shooter", is coming to PS3 this year in 1080p...
...each level not only looks completely different from the level that came before, it also has its own rules as to how its explosive chains work. Best of all, the surreal graphics are vector-based, which means that they're created from mathematical equations; and every enemy you destroy plays a musical note or a riff which is layered on top of the default musical theme for the level. The whole thing adds up to a unique experience that requires your complete attention at the start of each level as you try to figure out its rules, then zone out once you know what you're doing.
There is also a HD trailer now available on the US Playstation Store.

I just went back and played Gate 88. This guy def has some great ideas. I look forward to Everyday Shooter. The Indie support is definitely one of the better things to come out of the new E3.

I checked out the HD trailer - it looks really neat. Seems basically like Robotron with the graphical and audio sensibilities of Rez.

The title screen in the trailer indicated the game was playable, so hopefully there'll be a demo soon.

Bah, I hate when neat stuff like this is on the PS3 of all things..... the one system I really just dont want right now.

Yet even saying that, there's not ENOUGH neat things on there for me to change my mind on that anytime soon.....

Still, bah. I'd try it if it were on the 360 instead.

Well, there's going to be a PC version, though it might be a bit delayed now with the PSN version announcement. I have a suspicion the game is going to be very good ;)

IGN has a hands-on of this upcoming shmup, including new screens and videos.
IGN wrote:The game's mellow tone is influenced largely by the "musical score," but it would be more accurate to call it "the guitar." As you play, catchy guitar riffs dominate the game's aural plane. Most of the game's sound effects, explosions and bullet impacts alike, are actually musical notes. In addition to the fluid music, the game's visuals look brilliant...

Kotaku's got impressions and a live playthrough. Very positive on it.

Of course it's always good news to see shooters of any type getting to a wider audience, but do we really need more arena shooters on PSN right now? It just seems like overkill at the moment. I'm a big shooter fan and even I'm thinking "oh god, another arena shooter". I think they'd manage to keep up the interest longer if they spread this stuff out rather than flooding the market all at once and er maybe, I dunno, explore other avenues such as releasing a descent scrolling shooter for once  .

weird, does phpbb not like php urls?

I agree i'd rather see a scrolling shooter, but this is rez-like enough that i'm still interested. Music in that sample playthrough I failed to link sounded awful compared to the trailer though.

I want to try it, but I really do not want to shell out $600 for a console that's been doomed since launch and has so little else on it.

Sure it does. Kotaku's got impressions

You have a line break between the first ] and "Kotaku" in your post, which is why it isn't working properly.

Psychedellic arena shooters are starting to annoy me. What's wrong with lavishly drawn 2D graphics or well done 3D models? The new "retro" games seem to require shitty graphics.

Got this, first impressions are very good.

I'd have to throw bangaio into the rez / robotron comparison. Chain enemies to drop little square point tokens which you pick up. The scoring system rewards you both by giving extra lives, and with the pleasing sight / sound of chaining half the stuff on screen so it all blows up.

The chaining system changes slightly with every song/level, so part of the appeal is figuring out the new mechanics. e.g. first level, certain enemies produce an explosion radius; shooting the explosion keeps it on screen; anything in the explosion radius (including bullets, which are canceled) chains. another level, killing the appropriate "big" enemy in a network kills the rest of the enemies. There are text hints for the first level or two, but after that it's up to you to pay attention.

Graphics are much more whimsical than rez ( giant blinking eyelids, little red baron biplanes that strafe you ) but they're very clean and crisp & get the job done.

Minor annoyances - a visual fade effect between songs , during which you can still get hit if you don't pay attention, but this can be turned off. If you point-blank an enemy on levels with especially vibrant explosions, the explosion may obscure your ship.

Probably the neatest thing is that this is clearly the effort of one person (author gives his notes on the game, including his high score table for you to beat) yet it's gotten enough polish to be a worthwhile console title. Dunno what the longevity will be like (there are lots of unlockable trinkets for those who like that kind of thing), but the scoring system seems to have enough depth to carry it - I can't even get 1/3 the authors score at the moment. Bottom line, I have trouble putting it down once I pick it up, well worth the $10

Damn, this is pushing me over the "won't get PS3 until there is stuff I want on it" line. If someone confirms for me that the PS3 is also region free for games, I think I am going to pick one up...

Cody, I've just corrected your post, if you don't mind it, though it makes the whole conversation a little weird :)

I got it day one. dont think much of it honestly. it pretty boring. the music is okay, but those guitar effects get old quick.

I agree, they need to stop it already with all these geometry wars clones. some are better, some are not. but when this genre makes up like 40% of the games on PSN, its too much...

What's your high score?

As for arena shootemups . . . everyday shooter spanks blast factor and whatever the name of that other weak game was. As for 40% . . . 3 games is hardly 40% of this list:

Dl'ed this this morning, and so far it's great. Looks as good as Radilgy, if not better, and sounds better. It's fun trying to figure out the scoring system on each level. WELL worth the $9.99.

Oh yeah, I want to add that this is way more interesting and enjoyable than Blast Factor. I have yet to play Super Stardust HD (or whatever it's called). Does anyone recommend the latter?

I recently got a PS3 but somehow I didn't feel like plonking down 10$ for Everyday shooter. Maybe it's not different enough as you say, I already have Super Stardust HD and Blast Factor.

Super Stardust is great! The game scales with how good you are and I enjoy playing for score in planet mode. Even though it seems to be mostly about keeping the multiplier and collecting points. Also, completing the levels as fast as possible.

After a few loops I got tired of playing it safe so now I speedburst through the biggest asteroids and do more risky moves.

Yeah, I love Super Stardust but Everyday Shooter never really grabbed me either. Maybe it's because of the 8-way only shooting in ES, or it's slower pace. Some people seem to really love ES though, so it's nice to have a choice.
