From board FAQ:

* Donpachi
* Dodonpachi
* Einhander
* G-Darius
* Gradius Gaiden (one stage runs slow on the PS2)
* Raiden DX
* R-Type Delta
* R-Types
* Strikers 1945 II
* Toaplan Shooting Battle (runs at the wrong speed on the PS2)
* Zanac X Zanac

And I'll add Harmful Park and Salamander Deluxe Pack to this list!

The best cheapest ps game which has about the same amount of ships selectable in the mentioned shooters
Sonic Wings Special
* Donpachi 3
* Dodonpachi 3
* Einhander 1
* G-Darius 1
* Gradius Gaiden (one stage runs slow on the PS2) 1
* Raiden DX 1
* R-Type Delta 5 (not sure)
* R-Types 2 (2 games)
* Strikers 1945 II 6
* Toaplan Shooting Battle (runs at the wrong speed on the PS2) 2 (2 games)
* Zanac X Zanac 1
So that's 26
Sonic Wings Special has 26 completely different ships!
The Strikers 1945 I is also a good contender as well as GUNBIRD!!!!

I recommend:

Einhander
Zanac X Zanac
G-Darius
Soukyugerentai (if Saturn is unavailable)
(newer) Asteroids (very underated)

EDIT: I forgot Gradius Gaiden...a thing of beauty.

If you are a fan of Xevious, Xevious 3D/G+ is a must. I also recommend Gradius Gaiden and R-Types.

Must have:

-Toaplan Shooting Battle (if you can find it, one of the most rare PS1 games)
-Zanac X Zanac (if you like Zanac)
-Harmful Park (cool parody shooter)
-Raiden DX
-Dodonpachi (better than the Saturn port)
-Einhander
-R-Type Delta
-Gradius Gaiden
...

There are more, those are just the first to come to mind.

Hey, Copeland, you'll need a Jap PS1 for most of these. The PS1 is my favorite format for shmups. Sooo many first-rate shmups; it's ridiculous.

I think Ceph listed my favorites, though I would add R-Types and Strikers II to his list.

Gradius Gaiden is an absolute must if you like the Gradius formula at all.

If you can only play Western releases, G-Darius and R-Types are quite good.

Toaplan Shooting isn't the prettiest thing to look at, but it is old school tough to beat. I suppose if you're an R-Type fan (so am I!) you could appreciate the difficulty. But, if you're willing to track down a game that isn't exactly falling off tree's and since you don't seem to have a dislike for horizontal shooters, I had much more fun playing Gaia Seed.
You can read about it here...

And if think you might get the urge to try something cute or unusual, any of these are worth checking into...

PS1 Raystorm > Saturn Raystorm (aka Layer Section II)

Get it. It's a great shmup IMO. Excellent soundtrack too.

You should also get a copy of Mobile Light Force, which is actually Gunbird. Another good shmup. You can still pick it up for a measly $5. And don't judge it by it's rediculous cover.

Really? I saw it the other day for 5,000 yen.

Harmful Park seems to go for about 10,000 +

Is this more of an indication of popularity over rarity then?

It's cheap, but it's missing the cut scenes, and more importantly, as a carryover from the JP version, only has a mode where you have to scroll to see the whole screen. The Saturn one is a bit more, but is still rather inexpensive and has tate mode.
