I just saw this in an advertisement in this month's Hobby Japan magazine. It calls it a "1/60 scale plastic kit," so to me it would seem that it's a plastic model kit, not a toy as NCS is describing it. This is just a heads up for those of you preordering it but do not build model kits. I'm personally hoping it will be a model kit, and I can paint it any way I want to.

I just confirmed that it is an unfinished plastic model. Check out this auction on YAJ. The disclaimer in red says that it is an unfinished plastic model and requires assembly. I suppose that the parts can have injection molding like Gundam kits and may not require painting, but I wouldn't count on it.

EDIT: I'm going to send an e-mail to NCS and explain the error. Maybe get some more news from them, too.

that's disapointing...
Damn Tim, you know there are quite a few Americans out there who still lives in tents due to this shitty economy, and you're dropping loads on a single game which only last 20 min. Do you think it's fair? How much did you spend this time?

I'm actually hoping it will be a model kit, but that's because I'm into sci-fi modelling.

Here's the response I got from NCS: (Very quick response!)
Hi Greg, thanks for your email. The original preorder solitation from one of our Japanese suppliers listed it as a completed "toy figure" but we will check with them again to re-confirm and post an update once we know for sure. We'll also check with our other toy suppliers in Japan. Thanks for your help.

For greg,

Wow, interesting turn of events regarding this upcoming Vic Viper plastic model -- all the better if it's a kit then. You can paint any way you wish and it would still be one-of-a-kind model once finished..... ^_~

That Hobby Japan magazine is such a very slick & high class Japanese modeling magazine...the ads for some of those hentai figurines and such are easy on the eyes, right? ^_~

Greg, do you professionally assemble & paint Japanese mecha model kits on the side for a monetary fee? I don't have the experience nor the expertise but am willing to pay some $$$ for some custom Japanese mecha model kit building service (that is if you have some spare time, of course)..... ^_~

Yeah, Hobby Japan is a great magazine and I have a subscription. I occasionally get Dengeki Hobby as well, and I recently requested a 6-month subscription to that magazine (although it takes a month or two before I start receiving it).

I wouldn't call the pictures of hentai stuff easy on the eyes. In fact, it's rather disturbing at times. There's some large anime girl pillow with squeezable breasts and panties that are able to be slid to one side for God knows what purpose. I can't imagine anyone bringing that thing home on the train from Akihabara and getting tons of disapproving looks. Scary stuff. Fortunately, the magazine doesn't devote a whole ton of attention on that sort of stuff. Mainly just mecha and sci-fi models and PG-rated PVC or vinyl anime girl figurines. Speaking of which, there's a Princess Crown figure coming out very soon.

I really wish I could say that I'm some expert at modelling, but I'm not really. I just started getting back into modelling about two years ago. A while back I bought a cheap-o airbrush, but it busted a year ago. Since then, I've only been putting together Gundam models that require very little painting. You can check out a gallery of the stuff I've done on my homepagehere. I hope to get an airbrush again soon (I'm between jobs at the moment) and start learning better painting and weathering techniques.

I hope to get this Vic Viper model when it comes out, as well as the new Finemolds Y-Wing fighter that looks stellar.

For greg,

Wow, what an impressive model collection you've got there...I spot a Bandai Macross II Valkyrie II model kit in the stash. I remember when Bandai first brought out that Valkyrie II model kit -- it was back in 1992. Bandai never did bring out a completed transformable toy version of it though... ^_~

I have a few of the boxed Revell/Ceji USA version Robotech Changers model kits that were based on the Super Dimensional Fortress Macross & Super Dimensional Century Orguss anime series that came out in 1984 -- am not sure what the usual going rate for them are these days... ^_~

Also have got one of those boxed Monogram released GoBots "Leader 1" plastic model kit that based on the cool red colored Legioss Fighter mecha shown in the anime series by the name of Genesis Climber Mospeada...

I recall going to one of those Japanese hobby shops in Akihabara district back in early 2000 -- they had a glass display with professionally assembled Gundam model kits...the detail and workmanship was jaw-dropping gorgeous! There was an index card placed next to the Gundam models that simply stated: All models are available for international shipping. The cheapest assembled Gundam model was priced at 30,000 yen and the most expensive one, was priced at 80,000 yen. I thought that was a bit too expensive for my tastes though -- and walked out empty-handed, of course... ^_~

Now at Hobby Fan:

http://www.hobbyfan.com:80/product_info ... ts_id=5721

They're still saying it's pre-painted.

Also, the T301 model on their site was cancelld recently.

Interesting.... I'm still betting that it is a model kit, since that is how it was described in the small advertisement in Hobby Japan magazine. I wish I had access to Dengeki Hobby to see if it has more information. The two magazines complement each other. I imagine that NCS has the same supplier that the Hobby Japan place has. I checked out Plajapan.com, but they don't have it.

Thanks, but my collection has basically doubled since I took that picture. I have all my model boxes stacked in a bookshelf in my closet and it looks like a part of a shop in Akihabara. I never throw away the boxes of the ones I finish, either. Makes it easier for storage.

When I saw that the transformable Valkyrie II model was going for a ridiculous amount on ebay, I got mine at YAJ through SMJ. Macross II was a weak show, but the new Valkyries were awesome, and were designed by the same guy who designed the Zeta Gundam, even though he isn't credited for it. I have an issue of Animerica that talks about it. I have a transformable Orguss model too, which is also unassembled. I really want an airbrush...

Hmm, now Play-Asia is listing the Vic Viper as a pre-painted PVC figure. Oh, I'm so confused!

My Japanese isn't the best but on the manufacturers page for this kit it seems to say something to the effect of, "This is not a finished product. Photos are example of the finished product." It also says something about, nippers (cutters?) and glue as well.

Here's the link maybe someone with better Japanese can officially confirm.
http://www.atsai.co.jp/arthobby/page069.html

This sucks for me because I was hoping it was pre-painted.

For easy of simple painting, may I suggest picking up a set of Gundam paint marker pen set? They do the painting job remarkably well since they're pens but but with paint inside instead of ink -- fine for finer detailing work as well..... ^_~

Just got this e-mail from Play-Asia.
Hello Khoa,
thank you for your recent order#******* at Play-Asia.com.

This email is regarding your ordered item, the Gradius Sky Girls 1/60: VicViper (Sky Girls Version).

When we added the product to our system, we only got very basic product-information from our vendors. As the item just recently got listed on the official website of the manufacturer, we found out, that the item is not a prepainted model (as advertised before), but a model kit that has to be assembled and painted by the customer.

The model looks great and has many options (please see the new pictures on http://www.play-asia.com/paOS-13-71-12q ... -2c9i.html, but of course we understand that you might be not interested in a model kit. In case that you want to cancel or change your order, please just reply to this email or send us a message through our online CS tool and let us know your decision.

In case that you want the Model Kit, you do not need to re-confirm your order, it will be shipped out once the product is available.

With very best regards and sorry for the inconvenience caused,

Your Play-Asia.com Customer Service Team www.play-asia.com

Have you used Gundam markers on large surfaces? The application turns out rather uneven, at least when I attempt it. I only use the Gundam markers for medium-sized areas. For small areas, I bleed the markers and use a fine-tipped brush to apply the ink.

For Greg,

I haven't used such Gundam markers on such large surfaces. Using them on the smaller 1/144th scale sized HG Gundam model kits is a bit of a challenge -- it's possible to have the paint run into the fine detailed lines if you're not careful. It sure pays to have such a steady hand when doing such fine detailing on such Gundam models... ^_~

I admire the professional Gundam modellers -- they have my undying respect and admiration..... ^_~

There was a metallic Vic Viper from Konamistyle, and the crystal ones that you can only earn through the Gradius V IR Tournament. Maybe those were it?

I've tried Gundam Markers on surfaces of about a half inch or so, and it applied a bit unevenly. They're mostly for detail work. As I mentioned, if you bleed the ink out a bit, you can use a brush to apply the color with better results, and for finer detailing. Here's an example of this. I painted a miniature Gundam GP03 that came with the Dendrobium mobile armor. It's only about an inch big.

I've used them on a few Master Grades-EASY with those....I think you need the skills of a brain surgeon to do the smaller stuff.
