Really? Why you say so? Many people usually regard it as a good port, and I've played it a lot and always saw it as a good port.D wrote:Shadow Dancer was not a great port at all.
There was one ported game that took years to be done, the game was released at least one year later than the original deadline, and still the port was horrible -> Battletoads. How the HECK they managed to work in a port for like 2 years, a port from a NES GAME NONETHELESS and still fuck up the port?

Graftgoldguy who used to work at craftgold said that rainbow islands was converted on this method. Impressive.

MJR is right, the way those ports had to be made was really amazing in the worst way possible.
Look at the pathetic Street Fighter 2 on Amiga, and then look at Super Street Fighter II Turbo, which is a fucking AWESOME port, released when no one bothered with the amiga anymore...

The guy sharing this info was not andrew, remember graftgold had other employees as well.. I rechecked the thread; apparently they had not much to go at all except the arcade machine; so to get jump patterns right they had to hold tracing paper up to the screen and then compare it to their conversion.
If that is not crazy then I don't know what is... but it was worth it!
..also the guy who did the spectrum version was so good at the arcade game that they were able to video it all the way through.

SSFIIT's CCC2 version was a bit disappointing. Turbo speeds seem slower when set higher and the game slows down and lags on more active levels. The sound often slows down or plays in the wrong places too.Shatterhand wrote: Look at the pathetic Street Fighter 2 on Amiga, and then look at Super Street Fighter II Turbo, which is a fucking AWESOME port, released when no one bothered with the amiga anymore...

You probably know more than me about all this, but I always knew that Rainbow Islands coding was all done by Andrew Braybrook.
Edit: http://hol.abime.net/1191 this says the same, coding all done by Andrew Braybrook.
Whoever was playing the game with them (Andrew or not), probably didn't reach the last 3 secret islands, as they are missing on the amiga port. I remember many people complained about it, but I bet the guys didn't even know the game had those islands....
Ports published by Ocean usually were pretty good... Parasol Stars is also awesome, as Toki and Pang are (Even though screwing up Pang would need some real incompetent developers)
New edit: And the spectrum version of Rainbow Islands was also really awesome too.

Ocean also did the GB b/w Parasol Stars, which I like quite a bit. Does the Amiga version share the same staff?Shatterhand wrote: Ports published by Ocean usually were pretty good... Yes they did know there were secret islands, because they had them on videotape, but I didn't ask why they were not included. Maybe it took too much space and they wanted to keep it all in one disk, who knows. Andrew Braybrook indeed is credited with programming. But porting it was still team effort, that's why there were other people involvedShatterhand wrote:You probably know more than me about all this, but I always knew that Rainbow Islands coding was all done by Andrew Braybrook.

As you may already know, Ocean France also had a very good looking conversion of Snow Bros all done and ready to go, but for some reason it never saw a release.Shatterhand wrote:Ports published by Ocean usually were pretty good... I would have loved to have had this for my Amiga, back in the day.
Also I remember seeing a preview of Raiden on Amiga that looked pretty dead on accurate. It also never got published. The disk image got leaked in the newsgroups a couple of years ago.

Raiden for Amiga?
So does it exist? no videos on youtube. boohoo
Looks like a couple different versions of Raiden were planned for the Amgia. This one doesn't look as good as the one here.yojo! wrote:Also I remember seeing a preview of Raiden on Amiga that looked pretty dead on accurate. It also never got published. I am very curious about Amiga Raiden. Is there anymore besides that 1 screenshot? maybe a review or a video perhaps?
Seems there's nothing: http://eab.abime.net/archive/index.php/t-14216.html
Wait a minute, where's Wings of Death? Great shmup!

4:11 check out the loading in between music
4:15 check out level 2's music
Who the hell made that music? Huelsbeck or Tim Follin?
Brilliant.
I played this game alot, very solid. I remember the music on Amiga being slightly better. maybe it's the st emulator. The speach is very loud and clear in this version!
Jezis, I suddenly crave playing this game

By Ocean too. Their arcade ports were spot-on indeed, I dunno why Liquid Kids and Snow Bros weren't released. Toki and Pang were awesome.

On the other hand, a lot of Amiga games were Atari ST ports (especially a lot of the earlier games). The concept that the Amiga had better sound quality is a matter of taste. The Amiga audio hardware wasn't a PSG (Programmable Sound Generator) - it was just a device for playing sound samples (instrument samples). A lot of Amiga music has dated badly, because of the low sample quality of the inststruments and the strange forced wide-pan stereo separation used in the soundtracks. There's some good stuff too, but let's not lose sight of the pros and cons of each platform. The bog standard ST had a faster CPU too which enabled the playback of Amiga style MODs.Ceph wrote:Wings of Death is better on Amiga. Don't forget: Amiga = 32 colors, Atari ST = 16 colors. Amiga also has MUCH better sound capabilities than ST. The music and sound effects sound clearer, and because Amiga has more sound channels, the music doesn't break off when an enemy explodes.

This was a constant on the European scene I guess. When I had an MSX, I had to struggle with crappy european Spectrum ports, when the MSX was so much better. On the other hand, a lot of Amiga games were Atari ST ports (especially a lot of the earlier games).

Lazy coders.... :/

That depends. Did you ever play any of the 3D games on the ST and then on the Amiga? Starglider, Stunt Car Racer, etc? Ever wonder why they run faster on the ST? It's because the CPU was faster and all the extra hardware the Amiga had was useless when it came to 3D vector/polygon games. Also, dismissing the Spectrum and it's wealth of classics is a little short sighted I'd say. The MSX hardly got the cream of the crop when it came to Spectrum conversions. In fact, it only ever really got all the crappy budget games IIRC.
I never owned an ST by the way (I do have an Amiga though).
