It feels like we need to discuss this.

Well, the game actually IS great and entertaining.

But a perfect ten is quite a bit overrating it.
Looking at the sub scores for several elements that the reviewer gave, I can't see how he can explain a "10" for a total scoe...

How come you didn't quote the entire review?

Wow, we're getting reviews again? On a non-shmup though, I see. I have a feeling this review might really confuse newer players...

The review score doesn't make sense. The reviewer game the game a ten, but said things like "slow speed of Robo-Kid makes it hard in an annoying way as appose to a challenging way" and gave the gameplay score a 7.

Its a curious game and very long. There's only one problem with it (from what I remember when it was in the arcade) - There's a very large Boss quite far into the game. If you don't have a speed up when you reach this boss, its game over. Continuing won't help either.

This brings up the subject of reviews. Specifically magazine reviews. I don't believe magazines can publish objective reviews if the reviewer can't 1CC the game, or close to it.

He only needed the usual "final score not an average" reminder to silence you all.

I can think of a few problems that would at most take this masterpiece down to a 9.9

- no auto-scroll (which is okay) but no time limit or bonus
- regenerating enemies makes your score a number that happens to be on the screen
- You can pretty much get any power-up at any time, because the Side Arms power up system doesn't work without auto-scroll

Is there any difference beween the pce and md version ?
In the pce one you've got a life bar and it seems there's none in the md cart.
The pce one is titled special version and there's no time limit as well.
There's a short review on VGDen and it's not 10/10 game there :P .

This version, called special counts many differencies from the arcade: no time limit anymore, the super annoying I freeze when I'm hit is gone and replaced by an energy bar

I guess they did make it "special".

The only confusing thing is the people who keep calling various obviously belonging games, non-shmups.

Apparently this was scored on the Amazon Scale(tm), where a game can only receive 10 or 1.

Twiddle, I wouldn't say that Geometry Wars is a shmup. Same for Total Carnage. Why? Well, the mechanic differences are obvious but more importantly for me, I really enjoy the basic gameplay of conventional shooters but have absolutely no interest in almost all forms of pseudo-shmup gameplay.

Whatever, who cares about classifying borderline games anyway? The more reviews, the better I feel. I'd rather not help further turn this topic about the review into yet another "what is a shmup" discussion.

"Let me start this review off by saying what is probably the best thing about this game." Sentence fragments!

For once, I agree with Icycalm.

Um, I was just concerned that some new gamer seeing Atomic Robo-Kid (as the latest review) being rated so highly, will use that as an ideal to judge shmups when very few people would agree, and then on the basis of the gameplay (which is far from that of an "obviously belonging" shmup), not even being sure what constitutes a shmup (not that some of the other reviews like Contra Hard Corps don't do that already). I'm not sure why you came in ignoring the main point of the topic and took 1 of my 3 points as a serious challenge...

But at least this game got 10/10 AFTER the reviewer played it.

Let's imitate this guy!

Games aren't shmups unless they look exactly like either:
Raiden Fighters Jet
Battle Garegga
