Yup, it's a (imo) worrying trend that a lot of the latest announced shmup releases are download only.eretsua wrote:kinda was afraid of that.sfried wrote:WiiWare is original downloadable content. Will there still be a way to purchase one in say...10 years time when these games are considered retro?

I had not thought of that but you have a good point when the games are no longer downloadable from the official source. I guess I will be storing all my downloaded VC and Wii Wares on a stash of SD cards and then flipping the write-protect once they are full...Super Laydock wrote:Yup, it's a (imo) worrying trend that a lot of the latest announced shmup releases are download only.

Then again, in 10 years maybe there will have been some progress in enabling download from unofficial sources.

To the best of my knowledge you cannot store your VC games on any media other than the hard drive provided. They don't want you to be able to save all your games on your computer or share games with friends free of cost. This is annoying because eventually, say in 4 to 5 years Nintendo will probably drop support for their game server and you will loose all access to games you downloaded and deleted. This has created a real problem, you can't store the VC games you have paid for and you don't have enough space to save everything you will ever be playing. They have the upperhand too, if sombody does crack the file saving system they will probably just counter with new exciting updates that add a worthless new feature (such as a channel) while blocking the hack.
Some of the best shmups don't actually end in a vowel.
No, this game is not Space Invaders.

You can absolutely save your VC games to SD cards. The only problem with saving them to SD cards however is the fact that they can't be "played" off the SD cards and need to be transferred back to the internal flash memory before it is able to be played.

Is the card 2GB or less? Have you updated your Wii via system updates?Pixel_Outlaw wrote:Hmmm no, it doesn't work here. I'm using a regular SD card from a camera with nothing on it. I formatted it then tried again.
I transfer Virtual Console games to a SD Card all the time and haven't had any problems doing so.
...
Also, do you have any problems moving any other data to the SD card from the Wii - such as game saves?
And where are you going in the Wii system menu to transfer the data? In data management?

Copy Data to an SD Card
Important note: To save Wii console data (such as saved games, Messages, etc.) you must first connect your Wii console online and download the System Update. For more information on connecting your Wii console online, please click here.
To copy Wii game save data
1. Insert a compatible SD Card into the SD Card slot on the front of the Wii console, just below the disc drive.
2. Access the Wii Data Management screen (how to).
3. Select the file you want to save and select "Copy."
4. Select "Yes" to "Copy to SD Card."
Please note that while it possible to copy Virtual Console games to an SD Card and load onto another Wii console, the games will not be playable if they have not been previously downloaded from the Wii Shop Channel to that particular Wii console.

Hmm perhaps a friendly neighborhood mod could bread these posts away into a new one. I hope the "It's just you" vortex does not appear. The method to copy data is pretty strait forward, I know I'm doing it correctly.
Basically it just says:
"The File cannot be copied"

Which basically means... if your Wii console dies, there´s no way you can play that particular copy on the SD cart. Right!?RyanDG wrote: Please note that while it possible to copy Virtual Console games to an SD Card and load onto another Wii console, the games will not be playable if they have not been previously downloaded from the Wii Shop Channel to that particular Wii console.
Which still doesn´t answer the question if the games bought today are transferable or even to be getting hold of in about 10 to 15 years...
My bet is ...not.
Meaning that with these downloads you are purchasing a separate product that you can not resell separately like you can with used disc or cart based copies. Litterarly no resale value.

Pretty much right on all accounts. I don't like the digital media trend at all. The Xbox 360's Xbox Live games suffer this same fate.
Edit -
I should clarify - it's not exactly the same fate since technically you are able to sign in and play the games via your Xbox Live Arcade account. It will however require an active internet connection to do so, meaning that in the future if Xbox Live Arcade goes the way of the dodo, you will be in the same position as you are in with the VC games.
I didn't want anyone to get the wrong ideas that I'm saying its "exactly" the same situation.

Only positive thing to this is that it means that my copies of Trigger heart and Ikaruga will keep value over time.RyanDG wrote:I don't like the digital media trend at all. The Xbox 360's Xbox Live games suffer this same fate.
Still, I´d love to see a solution to this, if not legally and officially, then at least
through other means.
I wouldn´t want something like a possible Gradius VI to be PS3 network downloadable only...

The pic looks great. New Star Soldier with online score ranking, S&P on VC, wifi Dr. Mario...great time to be an old school/niche fan and a Wii owner. Hudson has been very good to U.S VC. so I have little doubt of SS R coming stateside.
Here's hoping Nintendo announces some sort of remedy to this before the Wiiware launch. I assume they're worried about folks figuring out a way to pirate/share their VC games? But I'm sure they could figure out a way to keep them locked yet still streamable off an SD card or USB drive of some sort. And for the love of all that is good, they NEED a firmware update to allow any and all video formats besides MJPEG.You can absolutely save your VC games to SD cards. The only problem with saving them to SD cards however is the fact that they can't be "played" off the SD cards and need to be transferred back to the internal flash memory before it is able to be played.

What they need to do, IMO, is build a hard drive add-on for the Wii. Since WiiWare games will be full games that you download on your Wii, Nintendo needs to get on the ball with this. There simply isn't enough storage on the Wii, as it stands now, for all of these new games coming out.Dylan1CC wrote:The pic looks great. Back on-topic, Hudson has done an awesome job with this series, IMO, and I want this!

yeah, that's a good point you have there. i'd be surprised if any of the current downloadable content is available even just 5 years from now.Super Laydock wrote:Yup, it's a (imo) worrying trend that a lot of the latest announced shmup releases are download only.eretsua wrote:kinda was afraid of that.sfried wrote:WiiWare is original downloadable content. another point that worries me greatly is the trend that is being set with downloadable shmups. what i mean is that shmups are now sold for a relatively small price through those live arcade/vc/wiiware services, giving the impression that they are not really full games in their own right. you'll see that soon enough, when a publisher does put the game out on a physical medium, the reviews will say that "this should have been a cheap arcade live downloadable title rather than a $60 game". it's deflating, in a very negative way, the value of shmups (both as a product and as a game).
isn't this that exactly what they want? nintnendo and many other publishers like sony and various big record companies have been trying to stop the 2nd hand market for years. saying stuff like it's illegal to sell your game/cd/book to anyone.Super Laydock wrote:these downloads you are purchasing a separate product that you can not resell separately like you can with used disc or cart based copies. with downloadable content they don't have to fight (& lose) complicated legal battles which would only make them unpopular with the public. besides it's a very easy way to enforce their region lockout as i believe you need a credit card registered in japan to buy from the japanese vc (not too sure if that is true it's only what i heard).
back on topic: i think that many people will just accept that these games are nontransferable cause they didn't cost them all that much and besides "it was a download only game, not a real game.
sadly it's not going to get any better anytime soon in regards to DRM (from the perspective of the customer that is).
warning: a huge warning sign is approaching fast!
