The International Ver. of Blade Runner is different...
I do have the International Version of Blade Runner on VHS format -- it does have some scenes that weren't shown in the USA theatrical version but still retains the background narration among other things. Plus it does show Roy pushing a metal rod through his hand in order to give a extra boost of adernaline as he is dying quite fast. Considered quite graphic at the time of release back in 1982...the MPAA (Motion Picture Association of America -- USA ratings board that stands by their so-called ratings system for Hollywood big budget & cheap-ass indie films) was wise to not feature this particular scene for the USA film market.
Nowdays, the MPAA sometimes hands out NC-17 ratings (the modern day equivalent of the replusive "X" movie rating back in the day) for films submitted to them for prelimerary rating approval and the film directors are confused as to exactly how their films got the dreaded rating in the first place. Trim some scenes out and try to aim for the more respectable "R" rating to earn more profits (assuming that your film doesn't bomb though) at the box office...go figure.
It's ironic that back in the 1960's & into the 1970's, the MPAA seemed a bit lax in handing out their ratings for some films but nowdays, that's a whole another issue to deal with. The MPAA folks are a hard-ass crowd to appease though -- there isn't any other way around them as they rule with a fucking iron fist in the USA nowdays. If your film project can't at the very least get a minimum "R" rating from the MPAA, you're fucked big time...whatcha gonna do? ^_~

Yeah, I loved how Beneath the Planet of the Apes got a G rating even though it had main characters getting shot in the head, apes getting burned alive (upsidedown crucifix fashion) and the end of the world. Doesn't the end of the world deserve better than a G?

I thought I saw him sticking the metal shard in his hand in the original... it's in the Director's Cut, right? I hear the international version has more gore, but nothing specific.
The MPAA are whore's now b/c soccer mom's that blame societies problems on TV and movies have a lot of power. Too bad they completely ignore the fact that over sheltering their children is what turns them into pedophiles and arsonists.

speilburg cut: movie totally ROCKS! Driving home from the theater you can't remember what it was about or why it mattered.Nuke wrote:Blade Runner Spielberg cut: Guns edited out and replaced with walkie-talkies!
George Lucas cut: Every scene in the movie is now CGI, including the actors!
James Cameron cut: 180 minuets of new footage, including a fascinating view into the mating habits of anglerfish!
After having become accustomed to watching the Dirrector's Cut, I was recently shocked at the extended original scene where Roy Batty pushes Tyrell's eyes in. We were watching an original US VHS tape that also had the narration where Deckard is commenting about Bryant's request to hunt the "skinjobs" and how that was like the ol timers who used to call black people niggers. I'm curious to see if that remains in any of the new DVDsGaijinPunch wrote:I thought I saw him sticking the metal shard in his hand in the original... it's in the Director's Cut, right? I've only ever seen the 1992 Director's Cut. I read DADoES and actually made it all the way through on the second try. While the book was tough to get into at first, it was worth reading in the long run.
Anyway, is it worth seeing the original theatrical version, at least to know what was improved upon if nothing else?

Sure, it's nice to see the original theatrical version of Blade Runner but you'd have to pick up a used copy either in VHS, Beta or Laserdisc format. The International Version of BR has some scenes that weren't shown in the USA original theatrical version, thanks to the MPAA... ^_~
Mr. Scott shot an extended love scene between Deckard and Rachel -- I'm sure it was quite interesting to see a human make love to a replicant, indeed. Perhaps Mr. Scott will restore this "lost" love scene between Deckard & Rachel for the 25th Anniversary Edition of Blade Runner: The Final Cut theatrical film version -- none of the existing Blade Runner film versions have such "extended" version of this scene anyways...
About that "skinjob" term spoken in the film (meaning using such machinery to fabricate such a living skin tissue job over the metallic framework of such a replicant), it's slang for "replicant" that's found in the both the original USA theatrical & International versions of Blade Runner films (but not spoken at all in the 1992 Director's Cut version of BR)...

The theatrical cut's usually used when Blade Runner is shown on TV, too. Though if it's on a network or basic cable, you'll miss out on some eye-gouging goodness.PC Engine Fan X! wrote:Sure, it's nice to see the original theatrical version of Blade Runner but you'd have to pick up a used copy either in VHS, Beta or Laserdisc format.

My curiosity is in regard to the "N" word (OMG, I know he didn't!!!). Supposedly Harrison Ford was not at all pleased with that dialogue and never wanted to say it, and with the current climate of politically correct revisionist history I wouldn't be suprised if the narration is altered to appease modern sensibilities.PC Engine Fan X! wrote: About that "skinjob" term spoken in the film (...) found in the both the original USA theatrical & International versions of Blade Runner films (but not spoken at all in the 1992 Director's Cut version of BR)...

Yes, thank you. I read the thread and am aware of what is included in the set. The point was: I half expect Hollywood to edit the offensive word, and pretend it was never said.GaijinPunch wrote:Apparently, yes. For GaijinPunch,
Yes, it contains some extra goodies that the current BR Blu-Ray 4-disc set doesn't have. I'll be adding this new BR Blu-Ray set to my collection indeed.

Waiting for your signature, informative reply on just what we're missing. To date, I've not watched the extras in my Final Cut DVD. I actually want that model it comes with too!

According to amazon.com site, this new BR Blu-Ray set has the following:
*all new 3-Disc Blu-ray/DVD and UV 30th Anniversary commemorative gift set.
*Revisit the illustrious Final Cut on Blu-ray, DVD and get a UV copy of the feature.
Additionally, the gift set features an all new concept spinner car for your collection, action Lenticular and a 72 page art production book with never-before-seen Ridley sketches, poster art and photos from the set.
So basically, we're getting BR on three different formats with this new bundled set (including the third Ultra Violet {UV} format). Plus the aforementioned action Lenticular with some memorable scenes + new Spinner to marvel at & lastly, a BR art book to soak up. It will surely make for some fine reading and glossing over the BR pre-conceptual artwork that Ridley is quite famous for (and even his attention to detail in even the smallest details of background scenery if doing a frame-by-frame analysis).
Having bought the bundled DVD set back in 2007 and later on, the 5-disc Blu-Ray release when it was available at a more reasonable price, it was quite comprehensive to begin with. With literally so much material to sift though, you'd think that even the kitchen sink was included. But it wasn't, so comes along another Blu-Ray variant release of BR with some extra BR themed goodies this time around.
Makes me wonder just how this new re-make of BR will turn out as well. We'll see.

That's what I wanted to hear.
Will probably pick it up -- shipping to Japan might hurt though.

Yeah, shipping to Japan will hurt the wallet a bit but well worth it in the end.

Well, I don't think Scott has added anything to Blade Runner since the Final Cut, since it was the final cut, after all. I'm sure the movie hasn't been tampered with (like Lucas would do); it's just the same stuff plus a few extras.PC Engine Fan X! wrote:Makes me wonder just how this new re-make of BR will turn out as well. GP, the documentaries are so fascinating on what effort was put into the movie, from magazines in the newsstand to the neon lights. Even the parking meters in the movie are so exquisitely detailed.

Does this new release have a new transfer at all? If not I'll pass...
Damn Tim, you know there are quite a few Americans out there who still lives in tents due to this shitty economy, and you're dropping loads on a single game which only last 20 min. Do you think it's fair? How much did you spend this time?

Yeah, that's what I'm thinking. I get pretty hard these days watching stuff where people actually have a trade other than computer programmer. Now, that's kind of hypocritical since I am, by trade, a computer programmer. But, there's something more tangible about the analogue days. And let's face it... the model looks cool so I should get it, if not for myself, then from Santa.greg wrote: GP, the documentaries are so fascinating on what effort was put into the movie, from magazines in the newsstand to the neon lights. There's a huge kanji blunder in the movie, that if it were Star Wars, would have definitely been fixed. Watched it last week and it was the first time I caught it . Give it a watch. I'll give you a hint: it's towards the end, and when I Googled that combination, first hit I got was a reference to it.(like Lucas would do)
