Quick question bout tate'ing tvs.

Post by Milkgoat »

I read through bloodflowers topic (very informative. Good job), but one question still remains. I flipped my TV for the first time earlier tonight, and all the colors were distorted. I had unplugged it and let it degauss for, say maybe about 20-30 minutes. Are the colors supposed to fix themselves eventually, or should I just give up trying to tate this TV.

Also, the colors were fixed once I returned it to it's normal position.

Thanks in advance.

From my experience, if they don't fix themselves after 5-10 minutes with a degauss, they aren't going to get fixed. Some TVs just do not like to be TATEed.

Exactly.

It won't degauss because either the degausing coil is broken, or it's magnetized beyond the coils strength (to demagnetize it). If you had a demagnetizing force (like a handheld demagnetizer), you could brush the discoloration away. You can even use a big speaker magnet to brush the discoloration away- or in other words, magnetize it so it works in a upright position- if your coil was too weak in the first place, you'd have to do it again when you put it back.

I didn't read the degaussing post, but what those usually leave out is that colors work with a demagnatized screen, but also with a screen that's been magnetized to work at a certain angle (like yours is when it's horizontal- hence the speaker magnet trick).
