Whats the easiest way to play imports on a PS1 or PSone?

Post by aphexacid »

Dont laugh, i really have no clue. i tried searching google, and all i get are half assed explanations, and some insane "swap trick" to play backups.

All i want to do is to be able original import japanese games on my NTSC/U ps1 or PSone i have a couple of both.

can i get a boot disc or something? i have a codebreaker, will that work?

please help! appreciated!

JP PS1/2/3 or solder in a simple modchip. A Gold Finger lets you swap out games but you won't be able to play Redbook games with the correct sound. A Breaker Pro (for PS2) has the same limitations, except you won't be able to play the games at all.

You can buy a Yaroze system. Its region free out of the box and its black.

If you modchip a ps1 some games won't work anyway due to protection techniques. However you can bypass these with gameshark codes. I dont think shmups are affected though.

Black, blue, or green. This is actually a good idea, if you don't have or don't mind getting another PS1. It's either that or an actual import system, which are pretty cheap on Yahoo.

PS-X-Change 1.0/2.0 boot to play imports on PSX/PSone

Post by PC Engine Fan X! »

If your PSX is model no. 7550 & under, a Goldfinger/Super Game Wizard cheat device works wonders by allowing one to play such original & backup of PSX games by hooking up to the back of the PSX's Parallel I/O port. However, if import PSX game content spans more than one disc (in the case of Aroma's PSX shmup title of "Geppy-X: 70's Anime Robot" with four discs altogether) then a mod chip will have to be installed.

What's really cool is to use such a modded PSX console in conjunction with a Goldfinger device and be able to watch the FMV clips in their entirety without playing or beating the said booted up PSX game placed in the optical drive. Some PSX games that were made by Digital Polyphony such as "Omega Boost" have special encryption schemes used to playback their properity high-resolution FMV clips and are thus not playable with such Goldfinger cheat device...go figure. ^_~

The PSX model no. 9000 series did away with the parellel port altogether so a Goldfinger won't work with that particular PSX production model anyways.

As with the 9000 series PSX console & the PSone console, both don't have parallel port on the back...however, if you use the optional "PS-X-Change 1.0 or 2.0" boot disc, then you can play imports & backups on a plain-vanilla "un-modded" PSX/PSone console.

All boot discs/swap methods have the exact same issues with redbook. That said, all 3 of those games don't use redbook so they work without a hitch regardless of the method you use.

Your probably better off getting an import ps2.

That's for 3 consoles, not 1. He just needs one.

Back on topic, I use the double swap (and triple swap for those who check the region again). Every game works absolutely perfect.

Hmm. Actually, i threw all 3 of those in my PC, and it looks like Gaia Seed DOES have red-book audio... the other two are ok.

I guess i'm back to square one. i'd really like to get one of those Yaroze systems, but i definitely dont want 3.

ePSXe and other Playstation emulators will play original PSX discs. Might be an interim option while you wait for your PSOne to be modded.

Ok. i hope i did good here. i really hate to seem clueless about this shit, but i pretty much am. i totally missed the bus on the PS1 import thing.
ask me whatever you want about Saturn though lol.

My friend emailed me this
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vi ... %26fvi%3D1
i sent the guy a couple messages about exactly what the hell this thing is. he says it DOES have a mod chip, but all he knows is that it has to have this "special memory card" inserted as well.

So i was like maybe its one of those gold fingers. i asked him does this thing plug in the back or front. he specifically said the front in the mem card slot.

I figured for 50 bucks, i'd give it a shot. at the very least i should be able to make copies of the games i want to play....i think?

now, does anyone know exactly what this is? i'm truely perplexed![/url]

Really? I was able to play Wipeout 3 and XL using a goldfinger. They have redbook audio and worked just fine. *shrug*

Are you sure the tracks were correct (may be harder to tell in a racing game)? Gold Finger uses the index of the swap CD so it may be pulling the wrong tracks with the wrong lengths (like sudden cutting of music). I've never tried the Wipeouts since I have the US versions of all 3 but that would be my guess.

For example, Gundam the Battle Master 2 can seem perfect when played on a Gold Finger (with the right initial disc; when booted from a non-redbook disc, there's no music) but all the stage music is from other stages/parts of the game and some songs reset in the middle (since they're not the correct length as the actual song).

Other games check the tracks at startup and won't boot if any are missing (which means you need a game with long and plentiful redbook tracks).

So for anyone that was interested in the weird ass auction i won, in which the seller claimed that you need this "magical memory card" inserted, in conjunction with the modchip for it to be able to play imports/backups...
i recieved it today.

I took it out of the box and it REEKED of cigarettes. i plugged it into the tv, and popped in a cheap-o import that i had (i'm not about to put a $200 shmup in this nasty thing until its cleaned inside and out.).

worked just fine. "magical memory card" not so magical.

although i think i'm going to send it to one of our members here named verciber. poor bastard got screwed like twice already with a memory card.
and i dont need another laying around.

So thats that! i took a chance on this, and the outcome was good. its not quite a Yaroze, but it does what i need it to do.

thanks for all the input everyone.
