Describe Your Perfect Stage?

Post by Diabollokus »

Ever wanted to make a stage for a shmup your own way? What would you do differently, where would it be set space sea sky? what effects would you have fly bys camera angle changes a la ikaruga and border down?

Well mine would be something like this

Imagine that stage 2 from chaos field, the huge black sphere, it'd be a team of ships and myself out to destroy its exterior defenses penetrate the core and deal with the boss inside, bit like death star in sw rotj.

start of taking off from space carrier 3 minute flight to planet, descent into lower atmosphere and slowly approaching a vast black sphere floating in the sky, you'd have 7 other members all with code names, on the way the way from carrier in space to planets airspace you'd encounter heavy resistance from fighters flying in and out of the screen and settle down for a mid boss fight with a comand carrier taking out its gun emplacements, engines, the enemies have all multiple parts to blow up.

In the sky the setting would be like S5 ETA from psyvaria 2, lots of radio chatter between ships and you'd see them in the backgrounds taking down parts of ships and as you rotate the sphere, they are taking out cannons on lower levels. think thunderforce 4.

Suddenly sphere opens huge robot flies out, takes out all of your team and tries to ram you. Transforms from robot to ship regularly, loses parts and falls out of the sky after punishment.

You fly through the hatch and part 2 is on the way.

Something like the final stage of Metal Slug 3, even though it's not a shmup.

Some long epic level where you break into the enemy fortress, destroy the core, rescue your friends, blow up the base, escape from the explosion, and then fight the final final boss that somehow escaped.

My ideal level would have me flying over a giant picture of my face.

I like this from Toaplan & Cave games, long trains of tanks (like in the first stage of DDP & DOJ, and towards the end of stage 1 of Ketsui, Bay area of ESP RaDe) where you can just sweep them all quickly for ultra happy destruction!!!!! or kill them slowly for maximum chain scoring, but either way they keep coming!!!

Personally I like the idea of a trail of after-images in some alternate dimension, kinda like the Final Boss stage in Omega Boost, played to the tune of something by Gamma Ray or Old Metallica.

That's how it would start, as if you were in Hyperspace.

Then...THEY would come....Enemies with large controllable-tragectory Lazer Cannons, they themselves are indestructible, so you're movements are limited, while you deal with legions of suicidal Kamikaze enemies that try to ram you into the crossfire from all angles ala Ikaruga.

If you manage to survive that....

A large ship shows up with what appears to be a massive Orb-like Maw....opens up and forcibly SUCKS YOU IN!!!! Now you're trapped....and inside this Room of Doom you are bombarded with a series of projectiles that bounce and ricochet off the walls....the ONLY way out of this tiny sphere is to Shoot at the walls, which then open up the heart of the core for SOME DAMAGE (this is a sub-boss BTW). Which after a few hits closes up the shell and you're trapped AGAIN! If you manage to survive that, the boss then begins to constrict the little Orb you're trapped in and sends out 2 GIANT SIZED bouncing projectiles that fire their own bullets at patterned intervals.

If you survived that and blew this sucker up...

Then a series of GIANT TANKER ships appear above and below you, firing a continuous volly of the worst bullets the game has to offer, not to mention a few homing lazers to dodge. You must find an opening to destroy these, but if you do....a series of MORE KAMIKAZE PLANES exists inside them when they're destroyed.

After about 5 sets of 8 TANKER SHIPS that you managed to survive....

You have reaced the core....however, suddenly the security has been activated and the core moves behind a massive wall....but then A BARRIER CLOSED BEHIND YOU and once again...you're trapped.

But this time....a large Mecha with a Massive Laser sword appears and Challenges you to Battle.

You didn't think this would be easy, did you?

And just as the fight begins, KAMIKAZE PLANES MATERIALIZE IN CHECKERBOARD FORMATION ABOVE AND BELOW YOU and are trying to squash you in their tight numbers....

But...oh....did you forget....this is a bossfight...remember...?

So the only way to get some breathing space to dodge the Mech's attacks is to Blast the ENDLESS WAVES of KAMIKAZES. He'll rush you with his sword...and even send out multiple boomerang devices trying to trap you. And then lastly he'll launch out a huge lazer pattern that you have to deal with as well as some homing bombs that Detonate into more projectiles if they get too close to you.

....If you manage to survive that....the Core Finally unlocks itself...

BUT WAIT....what's that that just materialized in front of the core...NO WAY....it looks just like YOUR ship...but...it's EVIL...and it seems to be using the core's energy as a shield against attacks....but it can still attack YOU.

Guess you'll just have to survive it and blast the core and get the H outta here. ^____^
The world would be a better place if there were less shooters and more dot-eaters.

Well, I've had an idea, though it's a pretty loose one. It could work both with an older, Toaplan-esque feel, or it could be manic, too. Anyway, here we go:

So, my idea for a shmup takes place mostly underground. First stage, on the way to a cave, second stage, entrance to the cave. So, after you beat the second boss (some huge vehicle that rolls over HOUSES like it doesn't even CARE! Oh yeah, there's a civilization underground, and they're being attacked by a species from further down in the planet's crust) it's dead quiet. No music or anything. Then from behind come two ships which quickly shoot down your teammates flanking you (oh yeah, there was a squadron sent to do battle). Your own ship does a loop-the-loop and the player takes control, disposing of the ships. The entire level scrolls very quickly, and there are many ships coming from all angles. I also want to contract Hitoshi Sakimoto to write the music for it :)

A short while into the stage, you come across a mining colony. You go down into it, zipping in and out of streets and around buildings, all while fighting off the ships and cannons under control of the enemies. Then, toward the end, you break out of the city. There's a huge dropoff under which you can see an airfield. As you dive at a sickening speed toward it, you see the boss, a big-ass plane deal that shoots about a billion bullets a frame. It comes up behind you at first, then goes ahead of you ala the big plane from Battle Garegga.

So, that's about all I have. There are about 6 other stages that I have a rough idea of, too, but that's the one I like the most.

When I read that I was reminded of stage 5 from Layer Section for some reason....

Heh, I know. I came up with this before I played Layer Section, and then when I did, I was a bit irked. Those Taito guys stole my idea! ...in reverse...or something.

My perfect stage would have the Ibara sisters in it. One ship and five girls, oh my.
