Sega Saturn questions.

Post by ktg »

These are stupid questions, but I've never owned a Saturn and I'm thinking of buying one.

Do I need to buy the 4MB upgrade cartridge for any shmups?

Does the Saturn use memory cards?

Does it matter what color I get? I found a site with both a white and gray one. Is one newer than the other?

Is there anything I need to know about their reliability? Like having to flip the PSX around after awhile.

Did they ever make an arcade stick for it? Where might I find one?

Thanks in advance.

Cotton 2/Boomerang supports it, but you don't need it. Metal Slug needs the 1MB cart.

It has internal battery backed-up memory. You can use Memory cards for the expansion slot to backup your data. Some games like Dragon Force require the Memory card (with it you can save in battles, without it you can only save between battles).

doesn't matter technically. The white one is newer than the grey one.

built for eternity in comparison to a PSX

The Sega Virtua Stick is ok, but you fare better with a PS1/2 HRAP plus an adapter to hook it up to your Saturn.

AFAIK, the most popular cart is the Action Replay 4M Plus. I personally use it and it works great. It functions as a RAM cart for games that utilize it (Metal Slug, Cotton2, etc.), it also serves as a back up save storage, has a cheat function, and will allow you to boot imports.

The only real problem I have encountered with it (after several years of ownership) is that it may need to be "pulled up" a little bit so it makes contact with the expansion slot better. This is supposedly a pretty common issue, but a minor annoyance when you first insert it. That aside, the cart works great.

I had one of those action replays die on me for no apparant reason. No throwing or treating it badly, but in the end I went and got another one!
About flipping your PS. You could also just carefully readjust it. there are several pods to play around with on your ps. There's one on the cd unit itself, mounted sideways.

Finally got a Japanese Saturn and Batsugun. But, I can't figure out why nothing is ever saved. Not even the date on the system gets saved. I can't read a lick of Japanese. Can anyone help?

It probably needs the system battery replaced - it uses a standard CR2032 watch-style battery. Pop open one of the back covers and take out the old one and snap a new one in place, that should let it save again.

To change all Saturn menus into English to the following -

Date screen - Select bottom right option

When main option screen comes up do the following -

1) Select middle top option

On the next screen

2) Select the bottom right option (System Settings)

On the next screen

3) Select the middle option in the lighter blue area. (Language)

Select English or your preferred language, then OK

Press B to go back screens and everything is in English. You can make all your changes knowing whats what now :)

I typed this whilst performing the actions myself so it should be the same on your system.

The bay door on the back of the machine houses a CR2032 lithium battery found in most stores that sell batteries. Replace that and the options will be saved when you turn off the machine. At first it might be hard to take out but youll get the hang of it. I would change it every 6-12 months especially if your not going to play it much as it drains quicker if you don't use the system often.

Whatever cart you choose to use, just leave it in the slot.

I would recommend you try Xmen vs streetfighter and Marvel super heroes vs Street fighter if you get the 4mb expansion as they are console exclusive to the Saturn (if you consider arcade perfection an importance anyway).

Its a great system ;).

As I discovered, it's possible to build your own controller board quite easily. Handy if you have any other sticks lying around.

Those are unrelated problems. Putting it sideways is for the drive rails wearing out and the laser module not being able to move around properly; laser adjustment is for the laser wearing out.

If you got it from a serious seller, it probably has a fresh battery in it but with a tab underneath the battery. Just pull out the tab, and you're good.

Neorichieb: Thanks for that language changing guide. It made my day.

My Saturn didn't even have a battery in it! Slapped one in and it's working perfectly. I also got the menu switched to English. Thank you!

News to me. I was aware that only Cotton 2 supported the Memory Expansion (aka 1Meg) not Boomerang. Otherwise as mentioned Metal Slug is about as close as it gets to a shooter needing expansion. Fighting games are another story of course.
