The reference to www.bonsaikitten.com in the "blindingly cute cat pictures" thread got me in a reminiscing mood. I'd like to take a moment to talk about http://www.absurd.org, last updated on 12/31/1999. Parts of the site started disappearing a couple years ago, but about half is still there. Between what was there -- torturous cyborg graphics, halfway inscrutable rants & stories about present/future technology, and assorted pisstakes of web design -- and my age and attitude around 1999-2000 -- it's still my favorite website ever.
The man responsible for that site more recently put up a painting gallery, which has more of the same style and ideas, only painted.
So, yeah. It'd be fair to call the guy disturbed. I like his stuff.
Old/defunct websites
One site I used to love, and I mean love, was Word magazine at www.word.com. It has been defunct for a very long time now, but it was amazing back in the day... way ahead of its time in terms of layout for the web and multimedia content. I used to browse it all the time back in '95-'96.

Not many defunct websites I really visited but definitely some longtime sites I hardly visit anymore.
I still remember visitng Sega.com in 1994. The holiday logo was of Sonic & Knuckles. Really liked going there for some reason until about 1996 when it just didn't feel the same anymore.
I also remember Phantasy Star Net in 1995 where they already had the exact same FAQs they have now.
I also remember Happy Puppy in 1996, by far the best place to pick up PC shareware at the time.
I also remember the Video Game FAQ Archive (now known as GameFAQs) in 1995, which I had almost no use for at the time. Infoseek search came up with far better results for the specific games I needed.
Damn, lotsa nostalgia...
