Darn, rented Grave of the Fireflies and the DVD was all scratched to hell.

Is this one worth buying?

Yep, I paid $35 or $40 US for my copy of Fireflies back in the day....
The amount of anime selection now amazes me, when only 4 years or so ago, I'd be lucky to find two titles in any given store.

I don't feel like watching it again anytime soon though, I know I'm going to be bawling at the first scene already T_______________T

Ahh, I remember when any VHS anime movie would set you back $25-35 and an LD would be a guaranteed $40. Times are good now, too bad my interest in anime has nearly died...

Yeah and they'd only put 40-60 minutes worth of material on the VHS tape.

I'm glad I've got Area 88 on LD. They would only release the first OAV on DVD, because no decent dubs of the second two OAVs existed.

Hell, they still won't release the Manga in it's original format, all Viz does is sit on it.

I'll see if I can't buy a copy Fireflies.

In the Uk anime dvds still cost £20, which is a bit shit considering most are under and hour long.

Yeah, I like the show more than I should.

The Iron Giant - just quality all round, I used to have the original book called 'The Iron Man' as a kid - it was one of my favourites.

Alice in Wonderland - this one has an atmosphere all of its own - Disney did very well turning such a twisted book into something coherent that kids and adults could enjoy, without mangling the story.

Transformers The Movie - Optimus Prime death scene. Life was never the same afterwards.

Ghost In The Shell - not much to say here, this is the closest to Bladerunner level and feel scifi we are ever likely to see.

Venus Wars - unspectacular in every way, yet one of the few full length anime films that really holds together all the way through.

Perfect Blue - slightly odd in places (not unusual for Japan), but very well done, and a departure from the normal themes.

I thought the Ninja Scroll TV series was incredibly mediocre...
It seemed like too many of the episodes started out with the party being attacked by some uninspired creatures for little reason...

The girlie was quite cute though...

It's definatly worth it, but make sure you have a hankerchief with you when you see it. I usually don't cry druing anime, but this was an exception. The Kenshin Trust/Betrayal OVAs are excellent too.

I haven't seen the designs for Ninja Scroll TV, but IMO, Nagha in the Slayers OVAs is worse. She has a very huge chest and a skimpy bakini.

I have a few that are not mentioned here -

The lion, the witch and the (magic) wardrobe
Flight of the Dragons
When the wind blows

I have flight of dragons, and your right, it wasn't mentioned. Interesting but I'm not sure it is particularly noteworthy (unless you are into really puffy dragons).
Are there multiple versions of the lion, the witch and the wardrobe. Like everyone else with a normal childhood, I read the book, but I've never seen any screen adaptation.

Never heard of the last one.

Are a few of my favorite anime.

I own Grave of the Fire Flies. I watched it once. It was good. I am not sure if I ever want to watch it again.

When the wind blows is about some grandparents who face a nuclear holocaust in the UK countryside. They prepare for it like they would an attack in WW2. Obviously when the attack happens and passes, the real truth about nuclear war comes out.. and the grandparents are still waiting for the paper to be delivered. Its kinda funny, but gets morbid half way through for obvious reasons.

The lion/wardrobe movie is coming out Xmas in the States and is being given a huge budget apparently (lord of the rings scale). The animated feature I have on DVD does not have the best animation, in fact its rather uninspiring, its still a good kids story and my 4yo loves it.

There is a commerical on right now for a movie called Steam man or something.. the animation in that looks really swish.

The Pinchcliffe Grand Prix. I remember thinking it was great as a child, but that might mean it's rubbish :D

Norway's greatest film export! I'm going to order the DVD - see if it lives up to my memory!

I found myself thinking a lot about "Banjo the Woodpile Cat" lately. It's not particularly noteworthy, but it's cute to watch once.

On a completely opposite note, my brother has declared "Wizards" to be his all-time LEAST FAVOURITE movie

I remember seeing one cartoon movie (not particularly good, mind you) about a guy who either gets sucked into a D&D game and becomes a dragon. A huge-ass dragon. Together with an older dragon, and a knight, he fights some sort of ogre or sorcerer. But he can only defeat him when he's back to his human form, and showing him the power of true sciences versus the superstition and false beliefs of the past.

Then he returns to the real world where he picks up one of the pieces of the D&D game.

The animation was reminiscent of the Last Unicorn. Anyone know which one that is? It wasn't cartoony, so I know it was not Flight of the Dragons.

I recently watched Fantastic Planet, an obscure French animated film from 1973. It's a sci-fi tale about this alien planet where humans are kept as pets by these huge beings called Traags. Some of the things in this movie defy description. It was released on DVD a few years ago. I highly reccomend it.

Side note: this movie is so cool, my favorite band named their third and final (and, as it turned out, best) album after it.

Yeah, you're right. That's it. The goofy-ass cover displayed in Amazon.com threw me off into thinking it wasn't. Fudge. Good artists aren't that hard to get nowadays. Da Horra!

I just saw the new Appleseed, and the visuals are just incredible. Story would get just a little slow at some times, but when they do action sequences, look out! The style is cell-shaded and heavy CG, but it looks beautiful. Highly recommended.

^ I foung that jarring, myself, the contrast of cel-shaded characters on photoreal backgrounds, but yes.
