Far Cry 2 & Crysis

Post by JBC »

FarCry 2 official
Crysis official

Here you'll find the 13 minute long demonstration video for Far Cry 2 which shows actual gameplay footage and gives a good idea of what the game will be like. The image quality isn't overly terrible but every now and then you can spot the Ubisoft logo on the projection screen.

It looks crazy impressive. I especially love the 'dynamic fire propagation' that reacts with the wind to spread brush fires accordingly. The graphics in this game look totally amazing. I honestly can't wait to see a chopper fight in motion. I haven't seen an actual example of it yet but what they say about the changing weather patterns has me pretty excited too.

Normally when a different development team takes over a series i lose faith in it before i even see screens but after reading the previews, seeing the stills and watching that video i'm seriously about to explode. I haven't felt this giddy since the first time i saw the Crysis nanosuit trailer back in February.

I don't mind the abandonment of the original storyline and characters, as it was pretty lacking. After all, the core idea behind the original FarCry was 'fight mercenaries' and that's exactly what you'll be doing in FarCry 2 - except now you are a mercenary yourself! I think with Crysis taking place in part on a similar island to the original and being developed by the original team it would be redundant and pointless to continue with the old setting. I really like the idea of going out against arms dealers fueling a war in Africa. Reminds me of Lord of War :)

Crysis looks to have the more interesting gameplay system of the two. The amazing power provided to your character by the nanosuit is awe-inspiring to watch in motion. The video of him zipping around the shanty town ripping off tin roofs, smashing through walls and waxing the Korean military by tossing full-sized dumpsters at them seriously gives me chills every time i watch it.

Too bad as of yet they haven't announced a console port for either of the two titles. Considering trends i'm willing to bet both will make it to PS3 and 360 though. I'm not sure i want to shell out the cash for an entirely new pc. :(

Frankly, I'm avoiding info on both games as much as possible, as there's no way in hell my PC is going to run them well (if at all) and I'm not getting a new one for some time. Now Jericho, on the other hand, has grabbed my interest. Despite looking pretty impressive, the new demo runs a lot smoother on my rig than the audio stutter-tastic, please-wait-ten-seconds-for-textures-to-load fest called Bioshock. It's also interesting to see a game with Clive Barker's name attached where the real draw is the gameplay rather than the story.

If Crysis gets ported to ANY console then it won't be really Crysis anymore. Developers stated many times that the RAM issue on both consoles is a big problem and they would rather do something within the same "world". I guess EA will put another team on it.
The multiplayer in Crysis is an absolutely wild and complex mixture of Battle Field and Quake Wars. There's a very good and detailed article on Eurogamer about it...unfortunately in German;-)

hmm Crysis looks to be fairly nice, graphically speaking...
Far Cry 2 however doesn´t impress me at all, at least not like the original did at it´s time (could be the low quality vids, but I am doubtful).

With games already looking as nice as they do now, it more difficult to make an impact with graphics alone. Loved Far Cry, but mostly because of it´s awesome graphs. They better make gameplay special this time as well.

Anyone else share this sentiment?

Those graphics do not impress me at all.
Of course, that's just an opinion.

Exactly what I was thinking. I always turn off Bloom, HDR, Retina-burnout mode or whatever the hell they call it these days. I'd like to preserve my eyesight for a little bit longer, thank you.

Crysis just gave me a boner.

Apparently there's more technology in a face on crysis than all of far cry.

Unfortunately, EA is handling it. Hopefully it won't be littered with bugs, like the rest of their games.

Hopefully my SLI 7900GTX's can handle full graphics... I doubt it, but here's to hoping.

I can't wait until they make a good game out of the Crysis engine.

EA is publishing it, not programming/ designing...that's still Crytek's job :)

To all those that love to post in threads like this saying "it sucks". Is there a demo out?

Scurred gets off the hook- he said it only 'looks' like the gameplay is missing : P

I'm actually very hopeful- EA or not- it looks like it has some serious potential :)

Haha, yeah right. I hope you finish what you started and enlighten us with your definition of "gameplay";-)
Kinda funny to read such philosophical stuff on a forum about 2d SHOOTERS

I can't wait until some major FPS falls flat on its face and they stop making so many fucking of them.

The genre isn't the problem. It's what they're doing with it.

How is criticizing a game because you have a brain capable of noticing a trend any worse than praising it for it's graphics and dynamic tin roofs?

Tin roofs?
Far Cry (on the PC at least) had a very open level design. Playing felt really good and rewarding because it invited you to experiment with different tactics. The jungle setting was sublime and believable making the game a true step above your standard corridor shooter.
Sure the water effects and some of the textures were very nice but what made it a great game were the things mentioned above.
You don't have to believe me or agree with me and you're certainly not forced to click on a thread titled "FarCry 2 & Crysis" when you think those titles (or FPS in general) are garbage because in your book they have to be.

Some people on this forum just really love to tell others that the new stuff is shit which I don't have a problem with. What's pretty sad imo are people who do so constantly and don't even bother to come up with more than just a lazyass oneliner.

Every board has it's share of naysayers. Shmups has developed a really bad case of it over the last year or so due to the hype over the new generation of hardware. Some people can't accept and adapt to change as well as others. If it does bother you the best thing to do is remember that their Chris Crocker-ish whining falls on deaf ears, as new gen games with surprisingly good 3d graphics such as Crysis continue to flourish.

It's [Crysis] officially out today - has anyone gotten to play it yet? :)

My pc sucks so i have to either wait for a new one or the supposed console iterations.

Yip, bought the special edition.
My first impression is that my PC seems a little sluggish- its auto detected and is running the game on medium settings.
Game play wise i've only just started - i can't wait to get a few hours of un disturbed play to get immersed in it. -It looks great tho - very nice- worth the wait.

This seemingly suffers from the same problem as FarCry, essentially going from a genius first half to a mindless second half. Shame, really, but I'd still like to try it out for that first half at some point.

And a good portion of this thread reminds me that a forum dedicated to a genre that's been around for well over two decades now bitching about the repetitiveness of games they've never played in another genre never, ever stops being amusing.

Here it comes! Far Cry 2!!! So far it's getting nothing but great reviews ^_^
Crysis looks to have the more interesting gameplay system of the two.
I take that back, btw. What i should have said was combat system. Then again...

lol- I spent a little bit of this morning looking for reviews- came up empty handed. Any links handy?

Also- do we know if Crysis is still going to hit a console at all? Last word I remember was PS3.

In terms of similarity to the original Far Cry, Crysis IS Far Cry 2. It's made by Crytek, it takes place on a jungle island where you kill enemy soldiers in a tactical free-world style with objectives to move you from place to place, and the last half of the game has crazy monsters to fight. The actual Far Cry 2 doesn't have any of the same characters, has no story relation to the original, takes place in Africa, and as far as I can tell has you playing a mercenary taking on any jobs you want in an open world sandbox. From what I've seen of the shooting gameplay itself, Far Cry 2 hasn't really impressed me though.

Crysis, on the other hand, was amazing, and Warhead was even better. The original was right underneath every product in the Orange Box for PC game of the year, to me. And that's not just because of the (amazing) graphics; I can only play it on low-medium settings on my laptop. The gameplay is really awesome. It gives you choice about how to approach different situations and you can play however you want. The suit powers really tried to do something different and it turned out great.

I enjoyed Crysis up until the alien level. That's when I stopped playing. It's a shame because the rest of the game was really fun with the different styles you could play as because of the suit. That alien area was just so damned ... not fun.
