Hardest Psikyo shmup??

Post by 1up »

I've been playing Strikers 1945 on and off for over a year now and havent 1lc'ed it yet. I find it quite challenging and havent really tried the other Psikyo games. I then wondered if Strikers 1945 is harder than the other games by Psikyo? If not how does it compare to the others and what IS the hardest shmup by Psikyo?

And if YOU want to point out that all Psikyo games are alike with different sprites, then dont post, as I want some constructive feedback :)

Thirding Dragon Blaze.

GB2's difficulty really doesn't take off until the second loop. DB becomes painful after level 3.

Dragon Blaze by far, Has tons of lovely pink bullets which move at the speed of light. That said though, all Psykio games kick my arse. I still can't get further than the 4th stage of Gunbird on 1 credit

Definately Dragon Blaze though I suck at all of Psikyo's shooters so it doesn't really matter.

GB2 is the hardest 1st round game. 6th boss, very tough rank increase.

Second round, seems like a toss up between DB and GB2... hard to say. DB seems like it would take even more memorization, GB2 faster reflexes.

Strikers 1999 is a bitch also.

Strikers 1945 I and II are medium (but the first Strikers is more towards easy than medium). Sengoku Blade is Medium, and the first Gunbird is a little easy.

Strikers 1945 Plus is a damn beast, at least compared to plain ol' 1945 II.

Dragon Blaze for me too.

Strikers 1945 Plus is a bitch, but as it's the second one in how much time I've put into it (the 1st one being Strikers 1945 II), I kinda learned to play it well, having reached 1-8 a few times.

It's not even one of my fav shmups from Psikyo, but there's an arcade in a mall I usually go that has it on a real big screen, so I couldn't help putting a few credits there every time I got there... there are some sick scores there (The lowest hi-score there is a 2-4 score), and I even played some 2-players games with a couple of guys there sometimes (unfortunately none of the "I can loop it" guys, but I've seen a guy playing there looping the game once)

Haven't gone there for a while, but I think I'll be there next friday...

I have never 1cc any Psikyo game (shame on me), but I've reached 1-8 in both Strikers Plus and Strikers 1945 II .

Should give some time to either Gunbird or Sengoku Aces just so I can say I've 1cc one of their games. Or maybe Sengoku Blade, as I enjoy it a lot.

I'd put GB2 way way way over Dragon Blaze, personally.

I see Fighter17 didn't like being mentioned in that video.

Dragon Blaze is much less hard (1st round) if you figure out how to use the dragon shot effectively. It requires being a little aggressive. I have to guess this is the problem people are having.

Because Gunbird 2 is harder.

I remember some pretty decent replays (I guess they were by cigsthecat) where he pretty much stayed close to the bottom of the screen most of the time. I guess it was with Tavia (that Jetpack girl?). That made it seem a bit easier than in Dragonblaze where you will be screwed if you try to be that defensive.

However, those replays only showed the bosses, I guess later in the game you will want to use your melee weapon more often, too.

Never played any of those that often. Something about Psikyo games just makes me die all over the place (compared to Cave or Raizing shmups), and it ain´t the hitbox. Maybe it´s the speed. DDP just seems very slow compared to Psikyo games (Dangun Feveron aside, that one just makes you really wake up).

However, the speed in those games create a real sense of danger and alertness, unlike most Touhou games I played. It´s not so much that they aren´t hard too, but just so... non-exciting. You spend more time trying to decipher the hundred-thousand bullet flowers that are slowly unfolding then actually dodging in panic, which makes dying in those games so frustrating to me. Being hit by a barrage of slow dot spam isn´t the same feeling as being killed by few but fast bullets.

EDIT: Psykio instead of Psikyo.

I went on an awn until the break uh dawn.

Gunbird 2 is probably the hardest. Dragon Blaze can seem more difficult than it is if you don't use the dragon effectively and keep things under control. Once you learn that it isn't too bad.

For loops, GB2 is just sickeningly fast. DB seems to be a tad slower, again with more emphasis on controlling things via the dragon shot.

I'm still wondering how, in the previous STGT, you got a higher score in Dragon Blaze than in Air Gallet. You must be into the 'torturing yourself' part after all.

Gunbird seems to have less going on in it, as far as the number of bullets and enemies, compared to Dragon Blaze. But I get smacked down just as quick anyway. Yan Nyan's attack is sort of like a dragonshoot too, since you can use it to wipe out certain annoying enemies as soon as they appear.

As Fighter17 says, Strikers 1999 also deserves mention along with Dragon Blaze and Gunbird 2. I've gotten the furthest in Dragon Blaze myself. I find it easier than Gunbird 2 so far.

I used to think Dragon Blaze was way harder, but the dragon shot is so powerful that you can neutralize a lot of the deadly risks immediately with a little memorisation/risk taking. So I would say Gunbird 2 is the hardest. Perversly, I find Gunbird 2 level 4 a walk in the park (excluding the boss), but any version of level 3 (particularly the autumnal castle one) turns me into a panicky bomb whore.
