What are your shooter skill "goals" this year?
So this year my shooter projects will be mainly narrowed down to:
1 credit Garegga using rank as best I can
Get better at jeweling in Progear
Learn a lot more about Radiant's chaining
Get as good as I can with both DDP (Sat) and DOJ (PS2) after I get my slimline PS2.
Each month will mainly focus on one shooter skill wise. One month Progear, the next Garegga, and so on. Late July and August I will focus almost exclusively on playing the Mushihime PS2 rev.

1. 1CC SOMETHING - right now Coryoon seems most probable (playing on emulator, but I absolutely LOVE this game and I'll buy it, high price be damned.)
2. Break 10 million in ESP RaDe (but 1CC still seems far off)
3. Buy a $150+ game
4. Buy more obscure hardware, with shooters
edit: I guess those last few don't have much to do with "skill", sorry :(

hmm i dont know, i dont have set goals...
well i have, but it mostly consists of perfecting a game unless i get bored to death of it.
so you could say that my goal is to 1CC DOJ both loops with a perfect chain and stuff, but thats very ulikely to happen.
i used to have set goals a few times like "i will 1CC X game before moving" because, moving implied not being able to play for a while.
these efforts ended in failure, tho
one thing i remember is gunbird 2 DC, i spent around 2-3 months with it, and got to "move" for various reasons. so the last day i was there, i put gunbird 2 in and said to myself "i WILL 1CC it tonight", i ended up playing it for about 12 hours straight, leaving myself sleepless at 7 o'clock in the morning, shaking and seeing bullets everywhere, but no 1CC, only got to the last boss...
tho GB2 is bot a game i really like, my dedication to it had to do with the fact that it was about the only shmup i could get my hands on at the time.

If anything, I would advise that you stick with one game until you achieve your goal for that game, then move to the next. Unless you're a God, changing games constantly interrupts your learning processes, meaning you may have to relearn things that should be second nature when you eventually return to that game.Dylan1CC wrote:Each month will mainly focus on one shooter skill wise. Just a thought.
For me, I'm inches away from clearing Thunderforce 5, ALL, No Miss, with a maximised score counter. Several attempts have seen me make it to the final form of the last boss in one life, only to be whacked by the sword it spawns
Just... a... little... bit... further...
EDIT: Twice tonight, final form of last boss, all the way in one life. Toasted straight away. This boss infuriates me no end
EDIT 2: Success!! http://forum.shmups.com/forum/viewtopic.php?p=28076
Now to play something else.

One question...
Does anyone keep playing past the point of enjoyment for the goal of 1cc bliss? I'm at the stage where its a chore to play souky but I want to 1cc it so badly. I dont want to ruin the game so I'm wondering if I should should just practice my skills on dodonpachi which I got just recently.

Re: What are your shooter skill "goals" this year?
Thanks for the advice. Well yeah, that's why I plan on one shmup per month. A month isn't enough to master a game of course (Garegga maybe, I've been playing it pretty regularly a lot over the last 5 years and it's a given to remember 90% of what is about to happen in the first 5 stages, plus I am getting more and more comfy with rank), but 30 days on one game is at least a really good practice session methinks. I generally have a pretty good memory when it comes to knowing what I need to do on certain parts. I'll see how it goes and adjust accordingly of course.Icarus wrote:If anything, I would advise that you stick with one game until you achieve your goal for that game, then move to the next. I'd like to complete Espgaluda, and Imperishable Night. It's likely that I won't, as I'm at the end of my skill level in both, and I like to play a mixture of games so can't put in the 2 billion hours I need to remember things well enough for pre-placement in levels.

I'm going to be as general and broad as I can be with this:
Stick with games
Far too often, I pop a game into a system, play it two or three times, and it goes back onto the shelf for another 3 months. There are several games I know I could 1CC if I just stuck with them for a week.
Just last night, I got to the last boss of Steel Empire, twice. Didn't beat him, came damn close. Another run or two, I should have that under my belt. Fire Shark and Jikkyou Oshaberi Parodius are two other games I've come very close to beating, but I keep avoiding coming back to them.
Commitment is what I need. I'm too much of a Jack of All Trades, I could stand to settle down with a few games, learn them, beat them. Appreciate them better.

This man speaks the truth. The same situation happened to me with Mars Matrix and Oshaberi Parodius. I got really close to 1CCing both, but didn't. Now I may never 1CC them.

Lately I've been playing Darius Gaiden and Hyper Duel at most. Still I can't resiste the urge and I play other games too (Puyo Puyo Sun and Street Racer, all on Saturn, are getting a lot of playtime too)
I personally never set goals, that's not what I mean while playing games. I just play them as much as I want, and I stop playing them when I get tired, that's all. If I 1cc, great, if not, well, maybe I'll get back to play the game again later in my life

Well, my main goal was to 1CC DoDonPachi, but I did that a few weeks into the year. I think I'll be working on Flying Shark for the next little bit, as it's really hooked me in lately. Time will tell if I ever beat it, so far I've only gotten to near the end of the third stage and I'm sure the difficulty ramps up continually, but we'll see. The exact same comments all hold true for Metal Black as well, but that one poses a whole different set of problems.
I also want to recover from my experience with PuLiRuLa earlier today. That giant head at the beginning of stage 3 freaked me out. But that's another story...

-My main goal this year is to buy a PS2, and lots of its shmups, but money's tight.
After getting the PS2 and the shmups, I plan to 1CC a few of those games.
I really want to get into the Cave shooters, but no PS2 and no mame.
Also:
-Go to 2-4 on Gunbird 2(I watched a Japanese player reached 2-4 with Marion, and it was damn inspiring. He did it with no bombs(I think he was too proud to use bombs), while I go crazy with bombs.
-Actually get into Zero Gunner 2. I could never turn correctly.

i wanna loop a Gradius game. if it happens, it'll most likely be V or Gaiden. III isn't really balanced on the fun/pain in the ass meter and i don't really care for IV. been playing the MSX collection on Saturn, so i might try on one of those three for size.
seems to me with my playing moods. verts i play purely for fun purposes, and am more goal-oriented while playing horzies. i suppose this can explain why i still suck at verts (don't feel like tate-ing lately either)!

I thought I was going to manage it this week but no! I seem to be getting worse lol. Its become a chore for me to play this due to frustation, I dont know, leave it and just enjoy it later with no chance of 1cc, or just be disciplined and play it to death for the 1cc now regardless of pain and anger!Smraedis wrote:I plan to 1cc Souky in the next week

Right now I am (with my little spare time) trying to get to level 3-1 of Shikigami 2 on one credit. That will open up practice mode for that level, and perhaps then I can finally figure out what in the world is going on with the boss on that level. What are you supposed to do with all those red and white boxes that are moving around?!?
I'm quite sure I'll never 1cc this game, but eventually I'll try to credit feed my way through, so I can see levels 4 and 5.

You have to get four blocks of the same color to lined up horizontally, and once they do, they will self-destruct. keep doing this until all the blocks are destroyed by you, or self-destructed. The catch is white blocks can only be destroyed with regular shots, red with your special attack, and gold ones are indestructible.professor ganson wrote:I can finally figure out what in the world is going on with the boss on that level. I'm playing Gradius Galaxies at work. So far, my unfortunate best is only almost 40K[!!!] but I can't tell for certain because it's all Kiken's high scores on it
and the game doesn't show me my score after I lose...
So, my goal is to get however far it is I can get in one credit during lunch break... I'm not sure how far into the game that is, potentially, given a good player and my work environment.
The speed settings are murdering me

its a bit like that for me too, I've been so close many times now, and when I do well, I just lose lots of ships at once..MovingTarget wrote:I thought I was going to manage it this week but no!
