Giacinto Scelsi - String Quartets [Arditti]
Bohuslav Martinu - Concerto for 2 Pianos & Orchestra
Luciano Berio - Sequenzas I-XIII
Villalobos - Fabric 36 mix -- not one of his better releases, but enjoyed it

...and more Eli & the 13th Confession. Has to be my favorite thing I've heard all year, or close enough.

That's the Laura Nyro album. The Poverty Train is on it, which you didn't like/were undecided about?

Teengenerate - Smash Hits

Got some Green Magnet School 7 inchers at the record store @ a dollar each. I'll post when I've actually heard them. Digging through that stack of vinyl is worth it sometimes.

Raincoats - s/t (I'd like info on their gear as the bass sound is fantastic)
Oblivians - Sympathy Sessions
the Zeros - Don't Push Me Around
Sham 69 - That's Life

Level 42, OMG. What is that album like? I bet nobody else in this thread listens to them. In fact I might be the only one who's heard of them.

You know, here's an album that's been much lauded (very often because it was rare AND because Thurston Moore said it was his favorite band or something.) After several years of casually keeping an eye out for it I finally stumbled upon a copy and thought--heh--this isn't really that great. So many albums doing similar things that are better; though I suppose the Raincoats were early at least.

Not trying to rain on your parade Neon (hah...pun), but someone needed to step up to the plate and contend the questionable legendary status this band has.

I went to that Pinback/Om double-bill last night and...huh.

You see, I'd never heard Pinback before, but I'd seen their name mentioned here a couple of times. I had no preconceived notions, (sub)genre-wise, but I assumed they'd be..., a little more on the rock side of things? Also, I wonder whose idea it was to have Om open for them, because the respective vibe of each band couldn't have been more different. Not that I can't see liking both bands in theory, but still...

So yes, I have to say that Pinback couldn't be more not my bag. Sometimes it's good to find these things out! :D

Om were fantastic, by the way, except for some sound problems early in the set. I picked up Pilgrimage at the merch table and it's pretty tasty so far. Was a bit apprehensive with Albini's name on the back...

I'd like to know of these bands; Young Marble Giants was the only one that came to mind that sounded like Raincoats. Maybe Marine Girls. I definitely have to be in the right mood for this album, i.e., not want my face rocked.

Something like 'Adventures Close to Home' has the makings of a great pop song - bouncy bass line, raggae guitar chops, just no snare on the two and four to make it easy to listen to. The feeling the song evokes is too silly for that anyway.

OK, no more silly stuff. FWIW Spaceghost is recommended and Kurt Cobain really liked the Raincoats, so if you don't goblins will skullfuck you.

I've gone through K. Cobain's favorite band lists and found some great stuff, but...why list that he liked them on a band's wikipedia page, as though this makes their music automatically good?

I was going to say it seemed like an odd pairing. I like Pinback but I don't think I would see them live. Guess the vocals are the dealbreaker, or something else? If you want to hear a "rocking" Pinback, check out Offcell. Even better is the Rob Crow solo album My Room is a Mess. One of my favorites.

Just heard that new Om album a few days ago. Seemed OK, not as good as the first two albums. Someone on another forum described it as something like "Tool intros extended to 10 minutes"... I thought they were full of shit until I heard it. It's not all like that, but I can definitely hear where they were getting it.

It doesn't have the makings of a great pop song, it is. On The Slits' album Cut. Also check out some Kleenex/Liliput. There are lots of mostly female or female fronted (post) punk bands from the time that are good. I found Raincoats the most disappointing. Pretty much the only disappointing one, since it's so often recommended.

Its an odd pairing but I think it could work as live show. I have seen Pinback live on a few different occasions and while they never blew me away they were always solid.

I would also agree that their Offcell EP is probably their best followed by their debut. Such a shame their last two albums sound so similar to each other. I think its time Zack and Pall resurrect Three Mile Pilot.

I didn't realize that was available yet. I'll have to pick it up. I can't wait until they come to the northeast in november. Albini produced it? That kinda makes me queasy.

Probably not really at all alike, but if you like the Raincoats I can't see why you don't just graduate to the first two albums by Wire. I know I say this shit over and over, but if there was ever a cmoon hall of rock and roll fame, those two albums would be in it :)

I have a couple solo Moore albums. To be honest, I really just don't get the appeal--and extend that to Sonic Youth as well. I just feel it has all been done better. I think this is the 'wolf eyes' syndrome. We can all think of bands as good or better, but somewhere, somehow Wolf Eyes became critical darlings (I can't believe they survived a move to sub-pop!) and with that name recognition comes an either 'in' or 'out' phenomena--IE, the crowd that used to follow them won't touch them, and their new fan base doesn't listen to the scene which birthed them. Blah!

A few other bands that have earned a bit of loathing from me for making the critical darling leap:
Acid Mothers Temple (duh!)
Circle
Lightning Bolt (I mean, really...)
The Dead C (no relevant album after Tusk...some may argue earlier)
Sun City Girls
Sun O))) / Earth

Well, there's always a lot more. Maybe this shouldn't matter, but instituionalized 'outsider' music isn't so hot anymore. Of course, no one is telling these bands what to do, but they could serve up a steaming pile of shit (and often do!) and the Wire would take it seriously and no doubt someone would give it glowing reviews. BORING!

All that said, from everything I've heard, Thurston Moore is a pretty cool dude. I just wish he was a bit more underground / low profile.

'Done better elsewhere' is kind of irrelevant to a thread based on what we're listening to at a particular point in time - any number of Beatles songs are better than anything on the current Moore record, but I'm getting a kick out of it right now, because there are some pretty decent pop songs on it, and I would like to recommend it to others in the hopes that they'll enjoy it as well.

One detects slight hints that you also believe I'm a slave to the liberal jew-run media, which is a lie. I pretend to like what other people say is good of my own free will. Trust me, once you're as far along the path of spiritual enlightenment as I am, you'll realize the greatness of the Raincoats and the new Moore wreck-chord.

It's a thought that will creep up on you with increasing frequency as you get older, like ol' CMoon. ;)

I still object to Wipers being done better elsewhere!
