That or it would be area "1225", the first digit not appear, maybe? I don't know, friend...

Thanks for the screenshot Max_FAD.
Nice going :D

You must have figured out a foolproof route. As far as I can remember Tiger Heli accepts no mistakes whatsoever.

Twin Cobra. Loved this to bits when I was younger and recently started playing again in MAME. Will post a score soon.

Are PCBs of TC hard to come by ?

Also, a bit OT but I was looking at the Twin Galaxies hi scores for TC in MAME and the scores here and beating the scores on TG. Why don't you guys send your scores to TG ? or is it a long story ?

Cheers,
Brian.

Its kind of a long story yeah  . Basically our scores would smash most of the score threads on Twin Galaxies, but there are a few reasons why we don't bother:-
1. You have to record your run on tape and I don't know of any tapes that run for 5 hours+ for my Truxton CS or Fire Shark etc.
2. Can't be bothered with a site that lists Western records as World Records - if they simply renamed them as 'Twin Galaxies records' that would be fine.

(I've mentioned this a few times already, but seeing as you asked  ).

What about MARP ? Do many post there scores there ?

So for an 'official' Twin Cobra (or any game) hi score you'd have to grab scores from here, TG & MARP ? Anywhere else ?

Guys. I've gone through shmups/Twin Galaxies & MARP and put together an overall leaderboard for anyone interested...

Code: Select all

	Score Source	Name/Nick
1	5,000,320	MARP	WCH
2	4,141,340	shmups	mulletgeezer
3	3,747,290	MARP	NoMercy
4	3,645,000	shmups	DEL
5	3,557,840	Twin Galaxies	Martin Bedard
6	3,042,380	MARP	Guinness
7	2,725,030	MARP	Midas
8	2,504,650	MARP	BBH
9	1,988,090	MARP	destructor@HotTeam.pl
10	1,900,450	Twin Galaxies	Greg Sakundiak
11	1,816,170	MARP	ZwaX
12	1,638,710	shmups ch'timi
13	1,585,590	MARP bubble
14	1,580,750	Twin Galaxies Shannon Ryan
15	1,531,790	MARP EMPTY-BOY
16	1,527,060	shmups PlasmaBlooD
17	1,509,910	Twin Galaxies/MARP/shmups Didier Sénéchal
18	1,281,360	MARP/shmups Edge
19	1,226,030	MARP shinobi
20	1,197,900	MARP FOXMULDER
Sorry about the bad formatting. Am I missing any other sources ?

EDIT: Just discovered ArcadeHits scores. And also noticed this threads game defaults a different from Twin Galaxies and I suspect MARP. Oh well. This makes any shmup score on teh board a greater achievement.

Thanks for doing the research brianon. I've never heard of the MARP guys WCH and No Mercy, but their scores are about right for western scores.

On a recent trip to Japan, Mulletgeezer saw a 7mil score on a Kyukuyo Tiger in an arcade. This is the Japanese checkpoint version which is much harder, simply because of the checkpoints. The WR is 10,000,000 Counter Stop.

Thanks for that.

KT 7+mill...WOW!

The 10 million score. Is that in Twin Cobra or KT ? by a guy with the nick "Counter Stop" ?

Is there any site that lists these scores ?

brianon - COUNTER STOP is a term denoting the maxing of the game's score counter. Sometimes referred to as 'clocking the score' or '999'ing the score'.
In the case of older multi-looping shooters such as the Toaplan titles: Twin Cobra/Kyukuyo Tiger (spelling?), Tiger Heli, Tatsujin/Truxton, Fire Shark, Vimana etc. The ARCADIA World Records draw the line at 10,000,000+.
You can score higher than that on these particular games, but the line is drawn at 10mil anyway. A particularly sick individual called Mills (-M-) even took Fire Shark to a score of 100,000,000+ and Truxton to 23,000,000+, both credits lasting more than 10 hours without breaks.

Other Counter Stops are written as 99,999,990 or 9,999,990 and some like Raiden Fighters 1 and XXMission wrap back round to 0 and start counting again from scratch once the Score Counter is maxed and exceeded.
Is there any site that lists these scores ?
Gemant's AIVA site did list the proper WR scores and Plasmo has made a shortlist of these WR scores.

Thanks again for the info.

I've PM's Gemant so maybe he'll get back to me with some scores.

Looks like it would be impossible to narrow down a World Record seeing as it can be maxed at 10mil.

A euro leaderboard is a possibility?

Ed Oscuro 610,050 Area 100 Comment: TC (World) all defaults/no autofire or tricks MAMEUI32 0.123 + keyboard

My first score after a long hiatus, too. Guess I'm not scared of slow boss bullets anymore (at least not that much; was able to bomb my way through the last few stages)!

Another highscore MORE THAN DOUBLED :D

I suppose I'll post my best score so far.

612,690. TC (world) rom: twincobr.

Way off my best but then that 'best' would have been about 18 years ago :)

EDIT: Mon 10th March: Now we're talking...933,630 :)

Woo, just had a great run! :D

Although it could've been better - I haven't really practiced the last two bosses I met up with, so I just bombed them (the last boss I reached I was also highly underpowered for, too, as I was suffering from Gradius Syndrome).

Yikes, MAME had the DIP switches set wrong (new install)!

It seems my previous score used the wrong defaults (50K/150K instead of 70K/200K), so I hurried and got a legit higher score (barely). Lots of practice for the game lately - soon I should be able to break into a significantly higher score bracket :p

KT seemed harder than TC at first, but the checkpoints actually help in getting your power back. Got killed before the third boss, made a recovery (red weapon seems to work much better at a low power level), and then made it to the second boss. Pretty much wasted my last three lives, unfortunately.

Not a very good score, but I think it's decent after my second play.

Twin Cobra, PCB, default settings:
2386150 pts, area 300. Had a graphic glitch and lost my first chopper on the two tanks where one shoots aimed strings of bullets (moving up and down) and the other move from side to side and shoots static patterns. Too bad. Then end of level bonus would have given me lots more.
