OMG what complete a noob.
I forgot to add one massively famous company...

Nichibutsu - Terra Force (its a solid shmup with lovely music)

They also did Moon Cresta which was a classic during the golden age and more importantly Terra Cresta which was converted by Imagine on the C64 and featured lovely Galway musak.

1987s Terra Force is the 4th game in the 'Cresta' series.
The last was Terra Cresta 2 which is probably quite rare as i didn't know it existed.

How is this thread meaningful unless someone compiles a list of top shmup by each developer? (not that I'm going to do it)

It's not meaningful, that's half the point. It's just a 30 second boredom killer. Plus I was genuinely curious about what some people's favorite games were. Particularly some I probably won't see ^_^ Like Rob's favorite Psikyo game, and TWE's or Gaijin Punch's favorite Cave games, things like that.

I can rank them in order but picking just one... I can't. Actually, now I'd find the top 3 hard to rank (DB, Strikers II, GB2*). All great with Strikers '99 gaining in.

*no order

I need to give Strikers 1945 II more time or something. It just didn't hit me the first time I played it. But then, I guess neither did Gunbird 2, and I LOVE that game now =)

Yeah, in some ways Strikers II feels the best to me. But it was the first one I seriously played. Easily their best selection of ships, that much is certain. Maybe the most enjoyable boss patterns too.

Well I don't know about other people, but I think the purpose of this thread is to write down what you like, so that when you come back to it later you can laugh at yourself.

It is cool to see some fellows here share same love for games and I see others that enjoy games I dont like --- It is help me understand them better when they post in the future as now I have understanding of their games style.
