Help! My Raiden DX PCB is glitchy!

Post by CIT »

Finally got a Raiden DX PCB, but unfortunately there are some graphical errors. :(

Please see for yourself:

It seems as though some horizontal lines get displayed in the wrong spot.

Does anybody know what causes this, and how it can be remedied?

I already checked if all the roms are socketed securely, and that doesn't seem to be cause.

Unfortunately my technical knowledge ends there, so your help would be greatly appreciated! :)

What are the voltages on your PCB 5V & 12V ?

Anything happen if you flex the PCB or touch major graphics chips ?

Yeah, I've been running it on 5 Volts, not sure what it's supposed to have.

The board is totally flat and in great shape, anyway I tried pushing on the chips and no change. I also took off all roms and resocketed them, but also no results. :(

Anyway, here's a picture of the PCB, just in case:

Actually I meant that you should measure the voltage on your PCB's :)

You can also try to run a fingernail along all the legs of the SMD chips.

Do you have a video of how it looks ?

Thanks for you help, rtw! :)

Ah, okay, gotcha! :)

I measured all the surface mounted chips and they all have 5V except for the one labeled "7" (the one on the bottom in the pic) which has like 1.5V.

Okay, tried it, but nothing happened. :(

Yip, here you go:

Note that the flicker running through the pictures stems from the frequency difference between camera and monitor, it's not a fault with the PCB.

Also note that the left side of the screen curves downward, this didn't happen last time I connected the PCB. o_O

Don't worry about the curving, that is an artifact of the sync. It looks
like you have a problem with one of the GFX chips or GFX RAM. The extra
bar in your picture is from the bottom of the logo meaning that the
GPU's are looking up the wrong tiles.

If you just bought it I would return it, if not salvage the EPROM's and
buy a new one.

Did it ever work 100% or did you buy it like this ?

Yeah, I bought it like this. Untested, but it was cheap.

RAM error sounds pretty bad. I guess there's no fixing then? :(

Save the socketed EPROM's and start hunting for a new DX. I
believe I saw one on YJ not too long ago.

Oh jeez, so sad.

I think the seller will let me return the board though, so I guess that's what I'll do. :|

Or is this version of DX undumped or something?

Nope it is dumped, I thought perhaps you would want the ROM's so
you could turn it into an English version ?

BTW:
Did you get the Taiwanese version of APB?

Yes, I got it! ^^

I wanna play it for a bit first, then STG might be able to dump it here in Munich. If not, I will get in touch with you. :)

Congratulations, good to hear :D

Let me know if you need any hints or tips on the dumping.

IT LIVES!!! :D

Yesterday I put the DX board in a cab, and miraculously it worked!

I then suspected the faults must have something to do with the power supply. Back home I jacked up the voltage of my supergun, and finally got it to work! :)

I had previously tried up to 5,25V, since any more is generally not adviseable, but turns out I had to go to 5,4V (!) to get it to run properly.

Very strange. Maybe the voltage meter on my supergun had been purposely gauged at a lower value for safety (?).

Anyway, I'm so happy it works now. Nonetheless, thanks so much for all the advice!

Thanks for the heads up on the Raiden DX PCB needing 5.4v to work properly...my USA region Fabtek produced Raiden DX PCB is glitchy as well. Guess it just needs some more juice piped from the 5v line to work properly...shall give it a try. ^_~

Hmm, you might as well give it a go. But don't blame me if your PCB gets fried.

Please measure the voltage on the PCB and tell us what that is ? I
suspect a misaligned voltmeter on your supergun.

Good to hear that you got it working :D

My Raiden DX has a few minor graphical glitches on it as well, but they seem to only show up when the game is turned on, and clear up over the next few minutes. I suppose it could be a voltage issue, but I haven't ever really messed with it to find out since the glitches disappear over time.
