How many shmups could there be?

I'm considering Space Invaders 1-D movement since you can only go left or right. If you find that dull, fine, but I still think it's a shmup.

Well, I didn't mean 1-D movement. The entire game being in 1-D would be kind of boring.

Thing is, when you add that, Rainbow Cotton, Galaxy Force II, etc, all become fair game as well.

Anyway, as for the number of shmups, I'd guess over 3000 - 4000 overall, but I'm probably not even close.
