Cave ports

Post by lawnspic »

I remember there was some discussion as to which Cave ports on the Ps2 were considered true to their arcade counterparts. Im talking about the "Big Four" EspGaluda, Ibara, Mushi, DOJ. My question is which ones are the best ports because i forgot what the opinions were on this forum and im to lazy to search. Thanks guys

The two that were done by Arika (DOJ and Galuda) are considered the most faithful, with Galuda holding a slight edge - the two done by Cave themselves and published by Taito (Mushi and Ibara) are considered inferior, though the extent varies depending on who you talk to (some consider them unplayable, others say they're fine as long as you're not too detail-oriented).

I personally never had any problems with Mushi, myself.

I can never quite figure out exactly why everyone hates that port so much.

Ibara I cant speak for..... yet......

Sum up from the various dead horses around the forum:
-interlaced graphics
-filtered graphics
-lack of/zero slow down emulation
-slight bullet pattern change on 4th stage boss (I think)
-absolutely horribly filtered yoko mode

other not as important but still bad points
-no digital audio
-really lame arrange mode

If you don't have analogue RGB or maybe non-HD component, the graphics will probably not bother you too much. The slowdown is more than urksome (sp?) if you've played the PCB extensively.

The music also loops incorrectly, and if you pause the music starts over upon unpausing.
Also, I didn't think the arrange mode was that bad. It's like playing DoDonPachi and Ketsui mixed together. Besides I don't like the button tapping

I didnt mind Mushi through component on a SDTV, however trying to play it via XRGB2 is a sham. Its almost blurro vision.
This industry has become 2 dimensional as it transcended into a 3D world.

The Ibara port is the most jacked up of all.

Not like us that don't live in Japan have much choice though, unless we go crazy and buy the pcb's.

That's b/c it's interlaced. Interlaced through XRGB will fry your brain.

Ibara PCB is cheap! Even w/ fees & shipping you could probably get it for $200!

Yeah, that can hurt. Well worth it though. Sigmas are great. Too bad they literally cost $100 to ship (just about, anyway).

Well arrange mode would be less lame if they included arranged soundtrack (which is cool) for that mode.... however arrange mode is easy since me a poor player of cave shmups i've been able to get on 1 life to TLB

I think Mushi for the PS2 is great. True, I've not played the PCB, but it's still one of my favorite shmups. There IS slowdown, and without it I couldn't imagine ever completing the last stage. Maybe the Arcade version has more slowdown, but the PS2 port has a sufficient amount.

The Arrange mode is cool, since you don't have to worry about timing bombs (although I can imagine not everyone likes this).

I also have Espgaluda, and it's awesome as well. A lot harder than Mushi though

Neither do I. There are buttons A, B, and C, and one of them I don't think is set up by default on the PS2 version, you have to assign it to something. It's the button that is effectively like holding the main fire button down, only you still move full speed. I set this button, and enjoy ^_^

I heard Mak's are pretty lame. Of course I've heard all kinds of bullshit before too.

Say what? I thought ESPG1 was by far one of the easiest Cave shooters I've played, way easier than Mushi on any difficulty (but then I didn't really play Original very much). ESPG gives you 4 min-power bombs and 250 gems each time you die, not to mention you can charge your bombs to basically beat any boss form for free. Plus you can use the scoring system in Galuda to make the game easier (clearing bullets or using Over on some boss forms).

Of course if you are talking about the Arrange modes or scoring systems then, well that's a different story I guess.
Macaw wrote:The Ibara port is the most jacked up of all.
I could deal with the graphics or other problems with the port, but the real killer is the loading time being so bad. Made even worse by the game's 'intro' after which there is MORE loading. Uhg.

Also what's with the alternate music for Stage 1 in Arrange mode? The original seems much better to me. :I

Cave easiness scale

Mushi Futari 1.5 (Original) < ESPGaluda < Mushi (Original) < Dodonpachi

Of course if you want to score in any of these they get much harder. Each can be exploited though. Mushi original has basically no scoring, so as long as you don't milk the bosses (boring anyway) you're fine. Fast bullets though, so you have to memorize a bit more than the others. Mushi Futari original is a joke. True I played Maniac first, but it only took me 8 credits to 1CC it. Dodonpachi, if you're trigger happy w/ bombs, it only takes days to clear. ESPGaluda obviously has the kakusei system to help get through tough parts. Same w/ Galuda II, but it's long, and definitely harder than any of the aforementioned...even if played safely.

They all jump somewhat drastically after that. ESPRade & Guwange are probably middle tier but definitely harder than the aforementioned. Progear fits somewhere between those two and Ketsui & DOJ. That's just me though.

Second loop music.
Most of the stages have different BGM in the loop, which is reflected in Arrange Mode.
