I dang near went to the Dino Jr show the other night. But I have one to go to tonight and one to go to tomorrow so there'll be no shortage of ROCK this week.
Plus I listened to some of their stuff and my opinion still stands: Decent music ruined by the voice of pure wimpiness. And it's funny because after thinking back on it, I think it was his voice I most appreciated as a teenager. I thought it was so soulful and unique. Now it just bugs.

“The chances of anything coming from mars are a million to one” he said
“The chances of anything coming from mars are a million to one – but still they come!”

While Jeff Wayne's musical is by no way a masterpiece, it has it's moments.
And I kind of like my music pretentious....

Beyond has two total classics (Been There All the Time, This is All I Came to Do) and three pretty good ones (Crumble, Almost Ready, Lightning Bulb).szycag wrote:I can't get into Beyond
And why wouldn't Green Mind be 2nd best
I'm learning how to play Puke and Cry on Jam Sessions DS. Yes I'm lame. I got all the chords and stuff but getting the strumming to sound right is hard.
Green Mind has two total classics (The Wagon, I Live for that Look) and merely two pretty good ones (Water, Blowing It).
Plus GM just sounds too clean. Beyond's production is closer to the SST records. Pretension alert, woop woop!

King Louie & the Loose Diamonds - Memphis Treet
Coffins/Otesanek - split CD
Possessed - Beyond the Gates
Morrissey - Your Arsenal (Ummm...heh. A couple of songs remind me of someone?)
Subhumans - EP-LP, The Day the Country Died, and From the Cradle to the Grave (They played here last Tuesday, and blew the doors off the place.)
The Crack Pipes -Every Night Saturday Night
Coffins/Otesanek - split CD

Bug may well be #2 actually. I dunno, Beyond isn't all that emotional come to think of it. Doesn't have a Forget the Swan or They Always Come. Still, to get back to the original point, I think Beyond is well worth checking out just because it has a few songs that will rock yr face. A solid B+ album, will probably wind up on my best-of-year list (will we do that this year?)lewisit wrote:just casting my vote for BUG being the 2nd best
i don't care how many "classics" or "pretty good ones" are on it: this album just rocks
Currently listening to George Carlin - A Place for my Stuff!
Patton Oswalt's new album is pretty funny (Dukes of Hazzard is a must-listen) but kinda falls into the Dane Cook delivery over content trap in spots
I think I really do need to listen to less pretty stuff, the albums I last posted are giving me a headache...minus Qui and Buzzcocks.
What new albums are you all looking forward to? What are the best labels around nowadays? I found out about Eric's Trip just by going through Sub Pop's website and hitting up the band's myspace pages if there weren't samples (if you haven't heard Eric's Trip, start with the Peter EP)

A band I rather like lately is The Damage Manual but they are more of a "super group", with members of NIN, Ministry, PiL and others. Jah Wobble on bass!

I've seen Otesanek a few times live and I've never been too impressed. I may be biased though since the first time I saw them they were fast and were more along the lines of a hardcore band and suddenly pulled a uturn. How are they on disc?MadSteelDarkness wrote: Coffins/Otesanek - split CD

Pretty decent. Their contribution is a single 21-minute track called "Narcotic Hues." Very slow, very doom-y, with a five minute drone intro. I like it, but I prefer the Coffins tracks; particularly the cover of Goatlord's "Acid Orgy."Acid King wrote:I've seen Otesanek a few times live and I've never been too impressed. Have you tried Teengenerate, Armitage Shanks, Oblivians, The Gories, The Zeros, Zeke, Fu Manchu or The Mummies?Neon wrote:I think I really do need to listen to less pretty stuff,
For Teengenerate get "Smash Hits" first. It's the best.
For Shanks just don't get "Cacophany Now" or "Urinal Heap" first. Try any of the other ones and then get those two later.
I don't have everything Oblivians ever did but it seems like one where you can't go wrong. I can vouch for "Sympathy Sessions" and "Soul Food".
The Gories are amazing front to back. Every record, every song.
The Zeros only have one and it's only half good but the good half is effing AMAZING.
With Zeke I would say start with "Flat Tracker" or "Dirty Sanchez", the latter being my fave.
Don't get the three most recent Fu Manchu records. Anything previous to 2002 will do.
I think you already tried the Mummies. Their stuff is also all pure gold.
Also I'm about 99% certain that you'd love The Briefs' first album "Hit After Hit". Maybe enough to try the second and third as well. Stay away from the fourth.
Oh and I'd say stay away from Sub Pop too. They proved that their finger was miles from the pulse when they tried to push those gaylord "Murder City Devils" so hard. Abysmal. Ya had to be there. I almost got interested again when they almost signed my buddies The Valley but they (Sub Pop) blew it again.
Also, what's wrong with pretty stuff? You might just be confusing pretty with weak. Desmond Dekker is pretty and so is Carlos Montoya. Nothing wrong with those guys. They kept it real for life.
Other nonpretty bands that exist further down the obscurity chart: The Statics, The Primate 5, The Fucking Eagles, The Earaches, The Valley, Mos Generator, Hellbound for Glory, Neon Nights (just 4 u), Holy Name Dropouts, Ape City R&B (world's best two piece), and I'm starting to draw a blank.
If you're not entirely up to speed with your rock history you'd do well by listening to everything the Wailers (OG rocking Tacoma Wailers not singsong pastafarians) ever did and getting acquainted with all of the Sonics' original tunes. Plus Link Wray is one of the most important rockers ever and you owe it to yourself.
I better just stop now.

I just discovered a French band from the early 80's called Sortilège. Apparently they are the idols of and biggest influence for Manigance, which is my currently favourite band.
Up and bought their "Métamorphose" CD reissue immediately and it's pretty good.
However, their "Larmes de Héros" CD reissue is damn nearly impossible to find... I have looked everwhere, cannot be found on Amazon or eBay of US, Canada, Germany, Spain, or France. Gotta be the French version too, not the English version... Not even cduniverse can help me this time...

Disco is so cool!
Oh, shit... Take A Chance.
Yep, that's my mom's favorite
My mom is still cool; she likes The Advantage.
Correction: Waterloo.

Well my favorite band, Armitage Shanks will be arriving on Friday. They'll play a set on the radio for Sonic Reducer on Saturday and then Sunday it's a show at the Funhouse. This is going to be insane and I've been playing nothing but Shanks albums back to back to back for days now.
"Croc 'O Shit"
"Nevermind the Ballcocks"
"Shanks' Pony"
"Sing and Play 20 Punk Hits of the 70s"
"Urinal Heap"
"25 Golden Showers" (but mine has 30 because it was custom made by Dick Scum himself)
"Cacophany Now!"
plus a couple singles:
"Smash the Cistern!"
"Are Friends Electric"
I'm not sure how this show can top last Saturday's rocking but I know it will. I'm fired up!
Oh yeah, I did receive a CD that I ordered a long time ago so I've been listening to it a little too:
v/a "The Great British Punk Rock Explosion" - Mostly I wanted to hear some more Sham 69 but wasn't so sure where to begin. This thing only has one Sham 69 song, "Borstal Breakout", which is actually the one I was most curious about. But the kicker was that it has the song "I Hate People" by Anti-Nowhere League. That was a huge song for me when I was a youngster. Then you add in a few by UK Subs, The Adverts and some old Exploited tunes and it's a fucking awesome disc.
