Is the Wii going to be the new shmup console of choice?

While I am EXTREMELY excited for Ketsui DS, especially after watching the gameplay video; I think more than one or two fairly good shooters on the go would be too much. I'd hate to see the DS become "THE" shooter "console." It's just not good for it at all.
I honestly don't think we're going to see a definitive shmup console this generation, but if it were to happen, the Wii does look most promising as far as physical copies of something goes.

I have hard time believing any modern shmup requires more processing power than, say, Metroid Prime 3. Sure, Wii is no powerhouse, but it can handle pretty much everything a modern shmup has to offer, IMO.UnscathedFlyingObject wrote:No. The games would be plagued by gimmicks (incline wiimote to scroll faster or slower is so lol.) Furthermore, the Wii is barely more powerful than a GC, so devs like Cave would pull the "can't do a perfect port" fiasco.
Also, I agree with sfried.

It kind of makes sense that the DS could be the next shmup console. It's the only system that's sold more than Wii at this point and since shmups are such a niche genre they'll want to release on a console that most people own to try and maximize sales.
I guess we'll wait and see what this Treasure announcement is.

Here in the States, the Wii has actually outsold the DS for the past 2 months.JJG wrote:It kind of makes sense that the DS could be the next shmup console. XBox360 is pretty homogenous, having almost all its games be of Amege genres (FPS, 3D platformer). Not to mention it sells like a lead balloon in Japan.
PS3 is prohibitively expensive for both consumers to buy and for developers to develop on, probably locking out a small company like Cave. I also doubt you would need close to the PS3's hardware specs for a shmup.
So yeah, I think it's possible. Wii is outselling PS3 by about six to one in Japan, so you're looking at six times the potential customers, as well as lower development costs on more than adequate hardware.
I find one problem with the 360 is that alot of people dont give it enough of a chance, and that was the same problem the Xbox had.
I have a 360, with numerous games, and not ONE of them is an FPS *or* a 3D platformer (I dont really play either). And many games Im waiting to come out for it, ALSO none of which are one of those two.
Personally, *I* blame GameStop; all the freaking talk about half the time, is stupid freaking Halo and Call of Duty and all that rubbish, always pushing stuff like that, and ignoring other stuff from other genres.... Heck, the gamestop AT THE FREAKING MALL near here has a fairly BAD selection of games for the thing..... someone looking for a new system, and seeing that, WONT be buying one (HATE GAMESTOP, I do).
Anyway, that little mini-rant aside.....
I'd honestly be a bit displeased if the Wii was the "console of choice" for shmups.
I know it's selling like hotcakes, but danged if I can figure out WHY.
Oh yes, the control scheme has POTENTIAL...... but is anyone USING it yet? No!
The thing hardly has a SELECTION as of yet. I dont have one, cause there's no POINT just yet. Rayman Raving Rabbids, bucket of fun though it is, isnt gonna last me long when it comes to single-player action.
There's no CONTENT yet.
And stupid Nintendo, with their obsession on "casual" gaming..... and that damn stupid worthless idea of "friendcodes" is the dumbest thing in AWHILE.
Argh.
Sorry, I like the Wii well enough actually, but I just dont see any reason to BUY one, not yet.
I'd much rather see more shmups on the 360, or even the stupid PS3 for that matter. Or PC, would be nice too. And the PS2, hate it though I do, isnt dead yet.

I fondly refer to my Wii as my "TG-16 and Gamecube emulator." All I play on it is Smash Bros, Phantasy Star Online (my roommates and I got back into this game as our current co-op hack and slash of choice), and then all the TG-16 shooters.
I do need to pick up Metroid Prime 3 though. I loved the first two games, and have heard nothing but good things about 3. Especially how amazingly well it controls, which is a big shock, and has me very curious.
I still don't think we're going to see more than a handful of shooters released for ANY new system, if any. We'll probably see some on all the downloadables, perhaps even some that are exclusive to whichever download service. But as for actual releases? I wouldn't get my hopes up for seeing much on any of the 3 new systems.

Expect Mushi Futari 1.5 to be released on the Wii sometime next year. It will feature a unique, reworked score mechanic involving the Wii-mote and analog stick attachment.
The 360 will get every Dreamcast shmup ever made. (Even the one that hasn't come out yet.)
The PS3 get's Soldner-X.
Our console future looks bright!

We push Halo 3 and Call of Duty 4 because thats what people want...
I told people I really liked Senko no Ronde and that it was my reason for buying a 360, but most people weren't interested when I explained the gameplay. Now, at the current $30 price point it might be easier to sell, but most casuals I know don't like the game anyways after they DID buy after my high praise.
Granted, I will say that most Gamestops are full of idiots that have no fucking clue what they're talking about. So trust me, despite it being one of my jobs, I'm on the same page as you. But in so far as pushing Halo 3 and Call of Duty 4... no, those franchises are far too popular. And since my goal is always to show people why they want a 360 over a PS3, do you think I'm going to achieve that better with Senko no Ronde or Gears of War?

Nintendo has started releasing Japanese games on the PAL Virtual Console.
I hope that they start this in the states soon.Too Good To Be True
Nintendo Begins "Hanabi Festival" For PAL Virtual Consoles
The earlier reports were right on the money. Nintendo have officially announced (and I've been officially playing) the first "Hanabi Festival" for the European and Australian Virtual Consoles, which will over the next three weeks see games "never before released" in these markets thrown up on the VC. You ready? This isn't a dream. Week 1 is Mario week, and has seen the original Super Mario Bros 2 (Japan-only version) and Mario's Super Picross (WARNING: tons of Japanese text) made available. Next week (21 September) is Ninja week, with the NES's Ninja Gaiden and Ninja JaJaMaru-Kun showing up. Third and final week (28 September) is Sci-Fi week, which sees the release of Sin & Punishment and Gradius III. Somebody hold me.

Apparently trying to imitate Europe's past couple of weeks, the US gets two previously Japan-only games this week.
First up is Super Mario Bros.: The Lost Levels. This game was never released in it's original form outside Japan, no matter what anybody says. The All-Stars and Super Mario Bros. DX versions are both easier, and the SMBDX version even removed five extra worlds! The game comes at 600 Wii Points, just like in Europe. Apparently, it's available forever, unlike the limited time release in Europe.
Second today is the phenomal arcadey N64 run 'n gun game, Sin and Punishment. Also not previously released outside Japan, this is one of the best games on the N64 and great for repeated playthroughs. Highly recommended. Again, like Europe, it comes at 1200 Wii Points.

Ehh, I know it all too well, unfortunately.
I used to work for them, not overly long ago.
And yeah, even then, I still say most Gamestops are fulla idiots, just as you said there......
I still remember when Halo 2 came out, and we had to try to sell it (and an Xbox) to EVERYONE.
That, and the US game market is obsessed with FPS games, for reasons I'll just never understand (they bore me).
Still, Im aware of alot of people that DID buy a 360 just because Senko no Ronde came out for it.
The market for such games (in the US) might be rather small, but it still exists; my main problem is just that an already small market like that is damaged FURTHER with cries of "ZOMG HALO IZ TEH BEST!!!!1111ONE".
And yes, I've actually seen the game, Halo 3. Saw it at my cousin's house.
It's the ONLY game where I've actually almost FALLEN ASLEEP while watching it being played.
I understand all the reasoning about it, and all that.....
.....but that still wont stop me from doing my "Buy a 360 instead of a Wii" rant, lol. Everyone I know has to hear it from me at some point, haha.
Still, though, you'd be surprised (if you didnt already know, and I bet you do) at how many people DONT buy a 360 SPECIFICALLY because of games like Halo 3 giving the impression that that type of game is all they do.
When in reality it has quite a VARIED selection, and it's getting even moreso (Yay, RPGs, finally!!!).
Gamestop might THINK it knows everything about what everyone wants, but.....
Well, Im sure that, working there, you know just as well as I do that the corporate guys often just arent quite correct.....
Even my boss from there used to complain about THAT one, heh.

I don't own any of the other consoles like TG-16 and Genesis/Mega Drive, and I do want to get to play the classics in perfect emulation quality (especially the N64 ones, although the high-res is an added but still "pure" bonus). So Wii is my alternative to try to spends loads on eBay. That, and I prefer to play on TV with a "tournament legal" (meaning not capable of save-states) setup for completion/scores. Hence, I consider my Magical Chase score null untill I complete the damn sucker on a Wii or TG-16/PC-E.
Besides, I know developers are not stupid to tack on some waggle when it's not needed. And don't blame Nintendo if they do: They don't have a policy of needing Wii-mote control. Just look at Fire Emblem...

I don't expect it will be the Wii. My money would be on the 360 at this point, and continued drip fed releases on the Dreamcast and PS2.
What is it with Wii fans insisting that everything will come to that system, and that everything should? Worse than Linux zealots - and that's not a compliment coming from a Linux user.
