I basically measure the effectiveness of my powerups by how quickly they can take out the purple ships during the Break time in the first stage....level 4 vulcan plus the laser is strong and fairly accurate without making the enemies as mean from you being too powered up.

Try the Player 2 side ship JP, I have not gone back yet! It is faster than the 1P side ship.

Highlight Arcade Mode, press start.

Press Right, Left, Left, SHOT x 12, then Start.

No clue how to activate it for Score Attack/Lifting/Omake.

And on that note I'm a little confused about the XIISTAG ship's scoring. The x12 multiplier is out, and so are points for using your Back Fire. Medals you collect, and bullets that you nullify with your bomb, add to a percentage on the bottom of the screen. Is this for powerups, score, bombs, or otherwise?

EDIT:

I have triggered the hilarious homage to space invaders in stage 4 by clearing the second break out scene for the first time yesterday. You can really see where the developers's hearts lie. I can practcally feel the shooting love oozing out of the screen.

Indeed. I saw that today.

And if you destroy all the little turrets during that section, you get yet another surprise at the end. :D

So... I played as the XII Stag ship today.

Question: Whats the point? I mean, I don't mean to stare a gift horse in the mouth, but is it even remotely feasible that someone could play through the game with this ship? Maybe the gay ass "move left/right a lot" thing works in Psyvarier and XII Stag, but I don't think this game was made with that in mind...

At any rate, I got to level 5!!!!!!! w00t w00t!!!! I think I've mastered level 1 and 2 thus far. Level 3 still gives me some trouble at times (turrets before the boss fight mostly), and the asteroid part of level 4 is flat out ridiculous. Actually, everything after the "secret" in level 4 is flat out ridiculous, including the boss. And level 5... yeah, I don't want to spoil anything, but towards the end "roads" become your new worst enemy. Fucking evil...

Still, this game is fun as hell... I actually like it more than the Giga Wings and Zero Gunner 2. :)

1. Border Down
2. Mars Matrix
3. Ikaruga
4. Trizeal
5. Giga Wing 2
6. Giga Wing
7. Gunbird 2
8. Zero Gunner 2
9. Chaos Field
10. Shikigami no Shiro 2
11. Psyvarier 2

Spiffy game. :D

Ok. Now for the million dollar question. How good have the sales been for Triangle Service? The game has delivered, but if it didn't sell well, there goes any chance for more shmups from this developer. And many others, too.

2000 have been sold I believe. Well, this was a week or so ago that I saw that number (and its probably in this thread  ), but its still respectable.

Good lord...saw level 5 today (used continues to get to it...) Absolutely rediculous (that turret part Kiken pointed out is absolutely murder.)

So what are these secrets in level 4...I don't recall anything special--though I really enjoy level 4. That boss at the end is really great.

Still mostly sticking to one weapon. I'm not sure I like the rank increase.

The secret in level 4:

Destroy all the battleships at the start (the long blue ones).

You'll get a bomb and a huge medal, and then fight some "homages" to Space Invaders.

If you kill all the "homages", you get an additional surprise that I do not wish to ruin.

Well if everyone's skill level is closer to mine, it shouldn't be too hard.

Honestly, I couldn't suck more at shooters if I had a hook for my right hand!

(Apologies to Cap'n Ahar in advance just in case he IS playing with a hook for a right hand.)

If you're talking about the descending portion of the stage with the criss-crossing bridges that's only halfway through the level. Stage 5 is the longest level in the game... plus, there's tons of chaining possibilities.

I'm still working on a reliable route through the spinning cannons portion... but everything else I pretty much have down... except for the boss that is. :/

Damn, thats pretty harsh. Now I'm debating on maybe credit feeding to get stage 5 unlocked in Score Attack...

2000 is rather low, even for a shooter release. PS2 Shikigami 2 and Espgaluda both sold around the 10k mark in their first week, and I recall DC Shikigami 2 selling around 5k. I would quote more figures, but finding them is difficult. T_T

We should have a contest to see who is the worst at shmupping on this board. I think I stand a GOOD chance of winning (or at least being in the top 5...or is that the bottom 5???)

gives me an idea, wonder how far you could get without firing a single bullet ?

Anyone know where any hi-scoring replay videos can be found ? would especially love to see that 700k+ Stage 1 run ...

Damn, we need to start a 'secret shmupping society of the low scoring'. Let me pick an animal and someone else can pick a secret handshake.

Dodging is for pussies!

Hee hee, I oughta remember that excuse next time someone rags me for being so lousy:

"You just dodge all those bullets 'cuz you can't take 'em like a man!"

As for a secret handshake, I'd suggest one person holding his hand flat, with the middle and ring fingers folded under, so that the index and pinky fingers stick out, to mimic the two prongs on the Vic Viper; the other clasps his two hands together and moves them slowly towards the first person. As the "Vic" moves his hand either up or down to "dodge" the oncoming second shaker, the latter's two hands separate and become two fists, to mimic the ice chunks, crystals, etc. that split into pieces when they're shot; the Vic meets his untimely demise, but the final handshake commences at the point of contact.

And yes, I should seek help.

Every time I think about that when I reach it, I die. Then I'm forced to use a bomb, then I die again trying to think about it. Then I usually resort to hugging one of the ends of the screen.

Eh, I'm going to credit feed the game so I get all of the score attacks.

I agree with just about every positive comment about this game, and I'd just be redundant if I something about it. However, I do have one major gripe with the game though- it has loading time. The loading is long enough to make me realize that the Dreamcast is spending too much time loading the next stage. Even when I quit to the main menu, the game loads for a few seconds. My other DC shmups don't do this... well maybe Chaos Field's little cutscenes also need a little work too. But still.

There was a page on Sega Direct showing the manager of Triangle Service giving a thumbs up and apparently being pleased with the game's status.

I think we'll see another project from the company, if I was in their shoes I'd stick to another Naomi game or DS/ PSP developement, their video of project Lambada doesn't look all that amazing for a PS2/GC/XB release. *-neo

So who here uses the XII Stag ship? I gave it a try and it looks like it has some serious potential...only one weapon(and not very good compared to the other ship) but that bomb is the shit. Collecting medals will fill up the gauge in the bottom corner and when it reaches 100%(which isn't tough to do) you get another bomb. Although the bomb doesn't really damage enemies, it absorbs all bullets(even lv4 boss's lasers)and as long as you're in the blast area then you're completely invincible, even against collisions which gives you a good 5 seconds to unleash the spinning attack. :o
