I have always prefered organic, fleshy, shmups and, for the most part they tend to lend themselves to the space theme. Generally though I guess I would go with fantasy, followed by space. War themed shmups would be a distant third I suppose...although mix the war with a little fantasy (Progear anyone?) and the whole war theme becomes much cooler imo.

i prefer a shmup that's a little tongue-in-cheek. I like it when games don't take themselves too seriously. That could apply to any genre, but fantasy is the most likely to be off-the-wall.

There are some space shooters that are light hearted. Dangun Feveron, obviously, but also aspects of Gradius are pretty cheeky. The Vic Viper is pretty damned cute in the early games, and you have to fight frickin' Maoi heads.

I can't think of any tongue-in-cheek war games. I'm sure they must exist.

Its between war and space for me but I picked space.

Heck, I'd half consider the Strikers 1945 series "tongue in cheek"...come on, hulking invading alien mecha prompt pilots of all the warring WW2 factions to unite for a common cause? Am I the only one who can't help but chuckle at that very concept?

Space mecha is the name of my game. Not a fan of modern, cute-em-ups, and most character shooters.

Basically, war shooters, like 1942 and anything with airplanes that look like they could've been created in this past century (despite how they fire), which would include Garegga, Strikers, Progear, and Sonic Wings.

Is that the plot? I had read the description on the cases for one of the Saturn games (can't remind if it was the first or second), and it made it sound like the plot had to do with some military industrial complex gone mad. They refused to let the war end, and unleashed their mecha to try to take over the world

It should be! I think it actually sounds much cooler than the one you mention from the back of the box.

Anyway, I don't think I really have a preference for the motif/setting in a shmup. I can see where many different types can have their own advantages and opportunities. I do like how the genre in general has gravitated away from being so reliant on literal "space shooters", though. Or even war/plane settings, for that matter- I do appreciate that Cave seems to make a genuine attempt to mix up their material, at least.

For me, creativity is more important than the setting.

You can have the coolest setting but still have dull, generic designs.

I like my shmup designers to forgo realism for the sake of creativity. Go crazy. Make some weird stuff up that we've never seen before.

I guess that's why I love bio Hazard battle.

Exactly. I think the space setting is bleak, lifeless, and overdone, while I like weird/cute settings. However, a stylish, creative space theme would be way better than a generic cute theme.

I like the very mechanical, space types of shmups. But specifically, I like the really hardcore serious ones that usually have a pretty dark theme (i.e. betrayal, post-apocalyptic, etc), without the cutesy anime girls-in-short-skirts everywhere (though regularly this is definitely not a bad thing). Some good examples are Ketsui, Rayforce, and especially Soukyugurentai.

I would agree here. Not just shmups but any genre.

It struck me earlier today that all fps have realistic environments...it would be nice to see some maps that would have shit you'd never ever see in reality, a la that one bouncy thing in Quake 3.

I'm going by what Rando said the plot was: here's his synopsis thingy of some shmup plots on Shoot the Core: http://www.shootthecore.com/Plots2.html

In either case, the plot's ridiculous anyways. :P

Nice topic!
I would have to say fantasy, though what I like about them is how they are odd permutations of more traditional shmups. They are like beautiful parasites, if that makes any sense.

Well, the biggest FPS fans are the people with $400 video cards, and anything less than photorealism won't do enough to show off their system specs. Graphics-wise, PC gamers favor simulating the reality they avoid by being on a computer all day over having something with style.

Having said that, I think a cel-shaded FPS would look interesting, but I don't see much overlap in FPS fans and cel-shading fans.

bump

Before I would have said war shmups were my least favorite, fantasy shmups my favorite, but lately I've been playing only war shmups like Strikers 1945, Battle Garegga, and Twin Cobra. Not sure why, exactly. Probably a coincident.

How would you classify Shiki I and II? Fantasy, I suppose.

IMO, Space just provides the ultimate setting when it comes to shmups. Personal preference yes, but when it comes to naming my favorite shmups, the majority of them are based in space.
