New hope for a PS2 Ketsui port?

Post by EOJ »

In Mihara's latest blog entry (here: http://mihara.sub.jp/top/blog/sb203/mih ... y=20070910), when asked about a PS2 port of Ketsui, here's what he says (the stuff in parentheses are also his words):

-If it's really just a simple port, then yes, I think it is a possibility (through emulation?).
-If you add in stuff like replay modes for training, then there are spots where the game doesn't handle the characters properly.

It sounds as if a Ketsui port is not out of the question. I think a lot will depend on the Cave festival, and the feedback from Cave fans. If enough people buy Ketsui DS, and want Ketsui PS2, it could happen. Though it may just be a bare-bones "emulated" port.

That really would be a punch in the face for people who buy the DS game and then have a full port released later.
Of course, that's just an opinion.

Why? The DS game is totally different. It's not a port.

Plus, one can't take the PS2 with himself and play Ketsui while shitting because of too many beans eaten.

Well, if it's significantly better than a simple boss rush, I guess that wouldn't be so bad.

I'd imagine it would be at least the best handheld vert shmup looking at the vids, although there isn't really much competition to be honest....

How do people know the DS game will be a boss rush?

People just guessing as the vids only showed boss battles.

Didn't Mihara state that it won't just be a boss rush?

Who cares if it is? The video looks amazing, and to have something like that on the go will rock even if it's mediocre. It HAS to be better than Nanostray, even if the video showed the entire game =P (which is obviously doubtful).

Haha, so apparently the problem was Arika trying to stick in all the usual Arika extras like built-in superplays and whatnot? A barebone port would be so amazingly amazing I can't even begin to describe (even if it's only as good as the Taito published Cave ports). I mean, MOST shooters are barebone ports, with the rare and occasional odd extra or two. I'd even pay full price for it without a single gripe or complaint.

I wish there was some way to get all the sentiments from this forum to Mihara.

It sounds hopeful, but i'm not getting my hopes up. It'd be great to see some bare-bones, no frills 'emulated' Cave ports hit PS2 though. I know I'd snap em all up, even if there were no features aside from the game.

In fact, does anyone here actually use things like 'level select' and 'no bullet' modes?

As our official ambassador in Japan, Gaijinpunch needs to twist Mihara's arm

We're just talking about Ketsui here. You're not going to see "emulated" versions of any of the newer games simply because the PS2 can't handle them.

god please make this be true.... i remember the joy experienced when all the cave ports were coming out on ps2 (the only reason i didn't buy pcbs was cos it looked at the time like all the modern cave games were getting ported )

but why stop at ketsui???
we want the rest too!!! i dont care even if there just emulated bare bones.
in fact id prefer bare bones if it meant they came out quicker!

Did you even read the post before yours? The newer stuff isn't going to happen. Hell, even after this news I'm still skeptical about Ketsui coming to the PS2, bare-bones or otherwise. This is certainly hope, but no gaurantee of any kind.

Edit: n/m, didn't notice the post times. You were probably typing yours out at the same time EOJ was his =) Don't mind me.

While the PS2 definitely can't emulate the SH3 games, the newer systems probably could. Whether or not Cave or anyone else would want to do that is a whole other issue. And of course the graphics would take a hit in terms of the resolution.

The fact Mihara is now mentioning a Ketsui PS2 port again, after months of silence, is very interesting. He may have reconsidered it, and depending on demand (demand which may be spurred in part by Ketsui DS) may opt for a simple port instead of the grandiose one he apparently had planned before (and which from a technical standpoint, was not feasible).

Well, yeah, I was taking that as a given. I was surprised when even Ibara was ported. I was thinking about other 'legendary' unported games like Guwange and ESPrade. Now this is hoping way too much I know, but it seems a shame to have these lingering I.P's just floating around untapped especially when they're so easily emulate-able. Throw in Dangun and you could have a compilation on one disc for very little indeed...

What was Pink Sweets on? It doesn't seem anywhere near as extravagant as Mushi Futari or ESP 2. That's one I'd really like to see a port of (wishful thinking, I know).

Well, is it possible that he's been spending some of the time since then trying to get level 5 to fit into the memory (I mean, the initial announcement of the PS2 port came out of nowhere in the first place)? I seem to remember someone mentioning that Ketsui is one of Mihara's favourite videogames. I guess he felt it was worth potentially revisiting (especially considering how well the port had been going).

Also, I don't think we really need anything as complicated as a replay mode... just give the game a stage select to practice levels as well as an option for a 2-1 start.

You think it would help our hurt our cause if a bunch of us left English comments in his blog saying to go ahead and finish the barebones port and continue with the DS version?

the 09:14 entry, right?

Cave has a right to port or not to port, but I think their decision not to port -- financially sound though it may be -- shows casual disregard towards the wishes of their fans. And yes, I mean the Western fans -- and they are well aware they have them, despite what some people on these boards might tell you.

ON THE OTHER HAND, their no-ports policy is really helping arcades. Not so much as if Sega/Namco/SNK/Arcsys/etc. stopped porting THEIR stuff, but still nonetheless helping.

However, at the end of the day, when a game is over two years old, its arcade exclusivity is no more helpful to the arcade industry, and it's at about that point where pretty much everything should get ported.

Oh well.

Seriously, though, even fake low-res ports Wii of Galuda II, Mushi Futari, Pork and Pink would go a long way towards introducing and reintroducing people to shooting games. Plus, my reviews would get far more hits that way.

I really hope this is the only reason why they haven't been making any new SH3 ports since Mushi and Ibara. Basing such decisions on what the PS2 can or can't do technically is just pure speculation.

I'm kinda hoping they don't even go this far. IMHO Mihara would pay a bigger tribute to Ketsui by releasing this with "no continue" locked in...at least until you can 1-All the beast. That will teach those whining "fans" to appreciate what they are asking for.

What more can I say I wouldn't be here today if the old school didn't pave the way.
