Even though it's a game, I refrain from using the flamethrower in Metal Slug, because it reminds me of seeing people burn when sprayed with one. Not because I have any feelings for those pixels, but rather because of what they remind me of.

On the other hand, I just love slashing them with the knife. A much quicker death for someone who wouldn't hesitate to do the same to me slow and painfully. :P

I just came in here to say that Paths of Glory is great, and makes me want to play more Fire Shark.

Just like in real life, both sides are brainwashed with news coverage claiming the other party is evil. So don't feel bad, you're just a pawn in a game between the powers. How do you think soldiers feel? They have to suck it up too. Now be a man and do as the intro of the game says.

This post reminded me that I still haven't tried out Fire Shark since getting MAME up and running. I tried it out, and man, that has to be the best old school shooter I've played. *adds to Genesis shopping list*

actually there is one game that made me feel pretty guilty - it's no shooter though:

Image

killing animals for fun - even virtualy but in a quite realistic way - somehow is just not my cup of tea...

oddly this never occurred when wasting hordes of "human" enemies in a game :?

Why do I shoot at things in a shmup game? Because if I don't, I'll look bad back at mission command, and they won't hold a funeral in my honor if I'm killed in the line of fire.

Can't have stinking enemy ships taking me down all because I'd feel ashamed little Johnny who shot at me might have some pregnant girlfriend back at home, and who was forced to fight by his nation or planets government against me. What if I have starving kids back at home and a wife who expects me back home alive, what will they think if little Johnny shot me down and got the badge of honor for taking down the good guys last hope for survival.

NO SON, ONE MUST FIGHT FOR HONOR, VICTORY IS NOT GIVEN AWAY FOR FREE IN THIS WAR.

No animals are harmed while playing the game. Fishes are either tossed back into the water or taken to an aquarium. The only guilt one could have is playing a backup version of this game.

Haha, I love this game. The dudes you play as are the most generic western fisherman dudes of all time.

Playing it in the arcade with the original fishing rod thing and force feedback is too awesome.

Trebek: No, it's NOT funny, let's move on....

EDIT: Andy McDonald should do a remake of Smokey and the bandit. I'm sure Burt wouldn't mind. I know I'm full of good ideas

I just got done watching Paths of Glory and it sort of made me a little depressed. I then went to play some shooters and I started to feel bad for all the planes I was shooting down. Depending on the game, you could be shooting aliens or robots, but in some games I'd imagine you are shooting down human pilots. What are we fighting for after all!!!
yes its always a pain in my heart when i shot down a plane
my docter said all the time killing pilots is affecting my
emotions very strong so im thinking of stoping shooter
and perhaps play barbies adventure,

or i just dont push the trigger if play a shooter
just fly around and try to make friendship with the other pilots
but this seems notso easy because on RFJ i tried
to speek english. german, and japanese
but they didnt listen to me
perhaps they are chinese pilots

It's really more or less just a joke topic, but maybe I am a girl because I am way to much of a pussy to try and play Fire Shark again. I get my ass raped more in that game then any other one. And yes, Paths of Glory was awesome, they don't make movies like they use to.
What are you trying to tell me, that I can dodge bullets?

Answer #1 (the GI Joe answer): They all parachuted to safety. Yes, even in space.

Answer #2 (the Wolverine answer): They're all actually robots, and have no souls. (You saw red fluid? It was just oil! They add red food coloring at their evil robot factories, to play on your human sympathies...)

But that raises another question: Given that many bosses time out to prevent point-milking, aren't there some shmups that are in clearable without actually blowing up anything? (The 'air Ghandi' mode...)

Wow, this thread is getting so deep.

If shmups depress you, go see a doctor. Seriously, this behavior is not normal.
This industry has become 2 dimensional as it transcended into a 3D world.
