Do you ever feel sympathy for the enemy victims?

Post by Cyarc »

I just got done watching Paths of Glory and it sort of made me a little depressed. I then went to play some shooters and I started to feel bad for all the planes I was shooting down. Depending on the game, you could be shooting aliens or robots, but in some games I'd imagine you are shooting down human pilots. What are we fighting for after all!!!
What are you trying to tell me, that I can dodge bullets?

Just pretend they're all piloted by people you don't like.

Do you seriously think they care when they shoot you (human) down?!

I just image the enemy ships to be piloted by shmups.com users.

Now that I think about it, I DO sort of feel bad for enemies that don't blow up gloriously enough for it to be worth my firepower.

Poor schmucks need to start carrying around tanks of Nitrous Oxide or something.

Just think of the scene from Lawrence of Arabia where a Turkish biplane strafes soem Bedouins.

The rage will return, and sustain your fighting spirit.

You should instead be feeling bad for getting shot down yourself. Each time you quit a game without clearing it, think of your poor earth/race/country and that it'll soon be ravaged by the aliens/monsters/robots/empire/wizard that you weren't able to beat.

slightly off-topic, but has anyone ever played Rolo to the Rescue on the Mega-Drive?

The true ending only appears if you get 100%, if you get less than that, you get an incredibly depressing ending, I think it was the only time I ever felt really bad for a game character.

I think the game being so cute helps it though.

Not really. They come back to life every time someone plays. Kind of takes the sting out of death. Not to mention, there can be multiple instances of the same person.

Some of the enemies in Ikaruga simply fly around in rings or something and don't even try to attack you. I sometimes feel a little guilty attacking those guys. Then I break my chain and get pissed at them again.

Yes. For every ship, tank, monster, person I shoot down, I feel sympathy for their families and loved ones.

I truely think games like Ikaruga are the cause of children's disregard for life. These games teach young impressionable children that it's OK to kill without remorse. Only through banning these gore-fests under the guise of games may we take our children back.

So I shouldn't kill anything in Espgaluda unless I'm in kakusei overmode?

No, you can kill them when they shoot blue bullets too, but you should feel really bad about doing it after.
