Tune into the tournament voting thread each week. Avoid the #1 voted game like the plague and you should do fine.splitblkribbon wrote:Hey guys im new to the board (and the genre), and I was wondering what a good game would be to attempt my first 1cc. Thanks for the help

Now if only the registered players could do that too.GaijinPunch wrote:Tune into the tournament voting thread each week. If you're looking for something easy, Gradius III for SNES is very 1CC-able. I haven't done it yet but I got to the last level on 1 life (you sort of need to 1-life the game because if you die in later levels you're completely screwed).
Ikaruga is also a good try to 1CC, I'm getting close myself (2CC on easy) and I'm a little over 15 hours of play time on it. It's definitely not easy but the challenge is more in memorizing the stages than in just dodging and surviving, so if that's more your thing you'll probably have an easier time.
DodonPachi and Esp.Ra.De are also really awesome games that aren't incredibly difficult.

Dodonpachi: Bomb more. Bomb a lot. Be a bomb whore. It's actually easy once you figure that out. You get so many bombs by your last life it's sick.splitblkribbon wrote:Thanks for the suggestions, I think i'll try EspRaDe. I've put a good amount of time into DoDonPachi but i can't get past the 5th stage on one credit. I hope its a little easier.
ESPRade: I personally find it one of the harder Cave games b/c the control is not that smooth and the bullets trajectories are deceivingly curvy. I actually played it after playing Galuda and a few of the more recent games where going through a mess of bullets is easy. It doesn't work the same in ESPRade. You need to go around those things whenever possible. Still a great game, even though it's broken.

Yea, try bombing all the way through stage 6. Have fun bombing constantly and running out of bombs on 3 different lives. Yes, you have a lot of bombs, but they don't last an incredibly long time, and if you rely just on bombs, you obviously aren't dodging/manipulating well so you're fucked when you run out of bombs.GaijinPunch wrote:Dodonpachi: Bomb more. Try progear. Pretty easy on the first loop to 1CC imo

Even using all of your bombs, and getting the 20M extend, I find Dodonpachi to be a great deal harder than ESPgaluda or Mushihimesama. So, while relatively speaking (relative to going for score), yes bombing your brains out makes life a great deal easier, it's still no walk in the park.
The two easiest 1ccs I've ever had were Triggerheart Exelica (and I even fought all the boss patterns), and Perfect Cherry Blossom (This game gives you lives like DDP gives you bombs... No kidding, I 1cced this game with ELEVEN deaths... Freaking eleven). Though, you can't simply MAME either of those, you'd have to actually get physical copies.

DoDonPachi is A LOT harder than ESPgaluda, even if you go in with guns... err, bombs, blazing.
Especially when you consider that Espgaluda was made with the intent of letting new players try the genre, instead of scaring away anyone but seasoned shmuppers with ridiculous games like DOJ.
Also, Imperishable Night is an even easier 1cc on Easy than Perfect Cherry Blossom. I 1cc'ed IN Easy on my first try, and can one-life clear it now. Actually, it's easier on any difficulty (I 1cc'ed IN Normal before PCB Normal, and 1cc'ed IN Hard and have yet to 1cc hard on PCB)

Hmmm, I haven't played a lot of IN. Mostly just PCB (and only enough to get the 1cc on Normal difficulty and the Extra Stage, which, for someone of my craptacular skills, took about a week for both
)... unless you count PoFV against friends -_^
I've heard the newest one (Mountain of Faith) is pretty freaking easy on Normal mode, but I've only played the full version once so can't really give my own opinion.

I think it took me about 15-20 hours total played time to get 1cc on easy with PCB. I suckArvandor wrote:Hmmm, I haven't played a lot of IN. Mostly just PCB (and only enough to get the 1cc, which, for someone of my craptacular skills, took about a week)... unless you count PoFV against friends -_^

Since you are new and impressionable, you might want to considering getting proper hardware now. IE: A nice arcade stick!I just tried ESP.Ra.De and got my ass handed to me

What do you mean ? I never noticed anything like curvy trajectories and I definitely don't think the game is broken. I want details!!
I recommend a good keyboard instead !! ^^ (but don't listen to me everyone else will tell you sticks are better)GaijinPunch wrote:Since you are new and impressionable, you might want to considering getting proper hardware now. IE: A nice arcade stick!

Hi there splitblkribbon,
Welcome to the shmups forum and if you have any new shmup-worthy news, please don't hesitate to share it with us...we'd like to know. ^_~
By using DosMame, Mame32, Raine, etc., it's a great stepping stone to trying out many of those classic arcade Roms before spending some serious $$$ on such full-sized Japanese arcade cabinet or portable Supergun setup and start dealing with actual arcade PCB hardware/software. You'll find out that playing with such real arcade hardware is well worth the money spent (even if your local arcades aren't up to snuff with the classic or modern-day arcade shmup PCB titles)... ^_~
Once you start dealing with arcade PCBs, then you will start to realize that you are your own "arcade operator", "arcade owner", and "arcade manager" and lastly, "customer" all rolled up into one person -- if you have a discerning eye for perfection when it comes to playing with such analog RGB CRT-based monitor that accept 15.7 kHz horizontal sync rate from the arcade PCBs themselves, it will the best setup bar-none (aside from using a standard CRT-based 4:3 TV monitor with a minimum of S-Video or Component Video inputs if you go with a Supergun with said outputs respectively). If you reside in Japan or Europe, then by getting a such monitor with Japanese 21-pin RGB or European SCART interface input, you're all set then...
However, for those of us who reside in the USA, it is a bit trickier as to acquring such an analog RGB CRT-based monitor that can accept the standard 15 kHz signal rate -- there are solutions to this particular problem if you can't get ahold of one anyways by using an Microcom produced XRGB upscan convertor or cheaper alternative (but you do get what you pay for in the long run)..... ^_~

There are multiple layers of "spray". I can't really explain it. If you look at it as a whole, it's not like some of the games where you can easily anticipate where the bullet(s) go.The bullet trajectories curvy ?!

Make sure you set your alarm clock to wake you up every 20 minutes. Don't take my word for it though. Ikeda himself said the score mechanic sucked.
And they are right, too!GaijinPunch wrote:(but don't listen to me everyone else will tell you sticks are better)

For PROMETHEUS,PROMETHEUS wrote:Mmmh I did notice that I seemed to die very stupidly in EspRaDe a lot more than in other games... maybe it's because of this trajectory thing but I can't seem to see that it is curvy when I look at it.
And yeah I agree the boss milking thing is 100% broken, forgot about that.
As for joysticks versus keyboards, I still have to find someone who gives me any valid argument aside from "it's what you have to play with in the arcades!", which is not valid for me since I never play in arcades.
How about patronizing your local French arcade joints...it's what keeps 'em in business. Not enough business, they'll eventually fold anyways... ^_~
Sure, there will always be those fellow shmuppers who say that which is better: keyboards or joysticks (when playing arcade emulation on a PC setup) -- whatever you are most comfortable using.
I'd rather go with the "real deal" myself and use such a Japanese Sanwa or Seimitsu produced arcade joystick and push buttons setup for that authentic arcade tactile feel that a simple PC keyboard can't even match. For the hard-core shmupper, the above Japanese joystick setup is $$$ well spent to improve one's shmup scores, so be it... ^_~
And how are the arcade centers scene in France -- is it still thriving or is it stagnant as usual, PROMETHEUS?

Sad to hear about the current situation about the arcades in France...my apologies then. At least, in Japan, that's where the major arcade development action is at then...that's common knowledge. ^_~PROMETHEUS wrote:Arcade centers are almost completely gone in France, there are only a few left in the largest cities. Yeah, if you are new to the genre, I wouldn't get so obsessed with one game. If you are using emus, take the time to check out the greats from each of the major developers (you can get a sense of this by reading the faq or messing around with the xeoncide files.) Don't forget the console only games (IE compile, technosoft, etc.) or the consoles in general--it isn't all about arcade games, and sometimes the ports are more playable or newb friendly (IE Fireshark on the Genesis versus the arcade.)
Try shooters from all the major periods to get a sense of what you like.

yessss blazing lasers, this is one of the games that got me into this genre due to its appearance on the wii. I can get through everything except the last level. It's kinda strange cause I ran up to the last level without dying once, then the games difficulty multiplies.

By picking up such a DDP-DOJ PCB and/or a Supergun setup or a Japanese arcade cabinet setup and you won't have to spend extra $$$ just to play your beloved DDP-DOJ at a Japanese game center...ah, but its' so cool to play in a real Japanese arcade as nothing else compares to it -- I've done so in a few during my two week visit to Japan back in 2000. ^_~BiQ wrote:When I was in Japan aroung may 2006 and got to play my favourite shmups in a real arcade, I quickly found out that learning to play ddpdoj on a ps2 pad does not really help me at arcades. So, I made the decision to never play my ps2 ddpdoj with anything else but the Naomi Arcade stick I had bought a little time earlier... So, next time I get to Japan, I won't be fazed with different controls. This is even though I still feel that I could play it better with a pad.
Now, if I only got to go to Japan again while ddpdoj is still active in arcades...
