Ahahaha, shmupsforum religious wars about something other than silvergun, garegga, or emulation ;) I wrote some stuff to make translation work a lot less painful using emacs po / ediff, so emacs is a pretty necessary part of my work. I still use vi for quick sysadmin things though.

Actually, even when I'm using vi, there's still a black bar across the middle because of the GNU Screen split.

OUr main programmer uses emacs. If I ever have to look at his code it's all fucked as he has a nonstandard tab setting. He'd probably do the same in vi though. I like gvim... pretty good stuff. But, I learned vi first, and never really got around to emacs, so, there ya go.

Why are arcades reluctant to go plasma

Post by D »

I just got this mail in today from coinopexpress:
-------------------------------
*** SPECIAL OFFER 1 ***
-------------------------------

World Cup Championship Football (WCCF) European Club 2005-2006

-- original HK version
-- full sets 8 players machines
-- with 2 x 42" plasma TV + original monitor (FREE)
-- only 1 set in stock for immediate shipment
-- ex work HK

$24,950usd
So there is use of plasmas. and let's be honest where would you find brand new 42" or 50" crt's? I'm sure they still exist somewhere, but they must cost a fortune.

Absolutely no idea. I haven't seen on on offer to anyone in the west yet. If anyone here knows a Japanese arcade operator well, they might be able to find out.
2 viewlix and a tekken 6 setup will run you a smooooooth $36000...

im guessing the cabs alone would retail at around $10 grand ?
Taito Viewlix = 490,000 Yen

nice price

Yeah but at least LCD doesn't do this -

Image

8th Generation Pioneer Plasma's can't handle fast motion for shit. Yeah, they might have the best static image at 42" + at 10 feet away but throw some hardcore HD gaming at it and your in a world of hurt.

$4232 ish. Sounds quite reasonable for the technology, not sold on its cosmetic appearance though.

LCD will probably have some fade effect totally blurring the entire image.
I thought Plasma was supposed to have better image for movement.
Or is this just a little bug in a specific model of a specific brand and is this example being used in the lcd vs plasma war?

D,

I don't know. All i do know is another forum I am a regular at is administered by someone who reviews TV's for a website. This new 8th Generation Pioneer plasma landed on his doorstep and he has posted that picture before the official review. But it will be reported in his findings.

Its not good either way, and no LCD TV has given as bad results as that.

The best TV on the market today in UK is the Sony LCD KDL40D3000 for under £1000. The pioneers start at £1400.

...because LCDs suck.

The day I see a standard res LCD that looks remotely as good as a my CRT TV I will throw it and all my other large pain-in-the-ass CRTs away.

techno cop..... busted
Damn Tim, you know there are quite a few Americans out there who still lives in tents due to this shitty economy, and you're dropping loads on a single game which only last 20 min. Do you think it's fair? How much did you spend this time?

I would not own a CRT over 25" anymore. Besides, in the UK they are becoming pretty rare brand new and the biggest size is about 27" by a crappy brand you wouldn't piss on if it was on fire.

There are a few technologies in development that would better suit the videogame market.

Canon amongst others - SED technology

Image

According to that diagram it doesn't work much different from a conventional CRT except each pixel has a 3 gun mechanism. Should be able to cope easily with fast games.

Sony are working on OLED displays, look at how ultra thin they are

Image

My eyes tell me this is a technology that has unbeatable colours and vibrancy that could be used in Japanese videogames. I can only fathom what kind of cabinet designs Sega and Taito will dream up with this technology. Will be cool!

Word is that SED will suffer from image burn-in.

It would be really nice if someone could come up with a system that had the best of both worlds - no burn in, and no lag/blur/colour-separation.

CRT's are typically dead in the mass market, as time goes on they will become more and more expensive to produce.

I'm not switching from a CRT until they fix:

1) lag
2) burn-in
3) price

crt
CRT suffers from burn in, hence why I asked for something that didn't.

For the record, I love CRT, and do ALL my gaming on CRT (no LCD or Plasmas in the house anywhere). But they're damned big and heavy, and suffer burn in. Two features I'd love for some new upcoming technology to make redundant. However LCD and Plasma both fail, so I'm waiting for something else.

only if you leave the game paused for an eternity. i have never once in all my years of gaming suffered screen burn in on any of my sets.

First of all I only said crt to fool around  But you know what they say there's a bit of truth in every joke.

1 Lag? wtf? really?
2 Burn in could be remedied by the same pixelshifting functions plasma now have and or a host of other features could be included like screensaver etc. But as it stands no crt I know has these features (yet)
3 Price? hi res crt's are indeed more expensive, but we could play proper light gun games on them! Do any 1080p crt's even exist? They would probably cost something like 30.000 USD.

I've owned my current CRT for about 8 years, and there isn't even a hint of burn-in on it.

...I'm really reluctant to make the switch to LCD or plasma. I've been doing a lot of research, and can't decide which would be better for gaming. They both seem to suck.

I've played many hours of games on LCD and Plasma (32" + 40"). If your playing 720p + resolutions they are absolutely fine. A bit like using a computer screen. No burn in or lag encountered (not noticable to me anyway).

But the games were 3D games, were high res. I think the main problem is getting something like the neo geo to look good on them. If your playing something shooterish, the lag may become apparent.

My friends got an ambilight Philips screen and 90% of the time he has games running on it (PS3 and 360). Its about 3 or 4 years old and has no burn in.

your not going to get burn in on anything unless you play the same game on it non stop without ever taking a break from it forever, that or leave it paused.

projection TVs are garbage for burn in yet I have never seen one with burn in all my years.

if you treat your stuff well at all and are mindful burn in is not even a issue with anything.

then again this about arcade and LCD, arcade games and screen burn in go hand in hand I guess.

You certainly can get burn in if you play a game with static score / info areas.

I'm slightly surprised no one has mentioned LCOS. It's got its own issues, like any display technology, and is less suitable for arcades than direct-view systems b/c of bulb life . . . but for home users, it's got much better contrast than LCD, and doesn't have the screen door / rectangular pixel issues of plasma. No burn-in worries, and it's price competitive with other projection tech.

I play fighting games like the Street Fighter series. I play them A LOT.

I have several CRTs now that have permanent life-bars burned into the screens. :)

Again, I love CRT. It's my preferred platform by far. But I'm not blind to it's faults.
