Eight Forces is good (!?)
Is there ANYONE in this forum who actually likes Eight Forces? First impressions for me was that it was shithouse, had brokenly-weak weapons, and was completely retarded.
But the graphic work in the game is really awesome, I love the boss designs and some of the backgrounds are just totally awesome (when you are fighting the boss in the battleship stage for example)
Beyond that, what kept me playing the game was the scoring system that basically takes the raizing-style medal chaining to the extreme (1,000,000 points medal max is just too good!!)
IN CONCLUSION:
Pros:
-Awesome graphics
-Damn hard
-Addictive medal chaining because they max out to such retardedly huge amounts
Cons:
-Plays like shit
-Has shit music
-All the 8 playable characters are shit except for 1
-Has Sonic Wings style limited time max power which is shit
Bottom Line: This thread is good.

Alright, I played this (cheated through) for what seemed like five fucking hours. On the plus side, I'm definitely ready to go sleep.
But first, a description:
There are two rounds, and apparently the second one is harder. Level design is identical though.
I tried out all the 1P ships; I ended up playing through with the first (default) character, although the second (top-right) character seems to have a better attack (a spread attack). The lower-left thing's powered-up attack looks like a bunch of spoons, and feels about as effective.
It takes FAR too long to kill things. I kept running (before I turned on cheats) into a big eye that CAN NOT BE DEFEATED without getting powerups, which you won't have that early in the game. So your first skill will have to be dodging ability. Choose a ship that doesn't throw out distracting projectiles that mask enemy shots.
Scoring: the medals stack (i.e. 1600 for one, next is 3200) and this carries through to the second round. You can get up to 1 million points PER MEDAL, and so they are the biggest factor determining score. I got a score of 21M+ points. The first 1M medal I got added roughly 1/6 onto my score. I'm not sure, but it feels like nothing else even comes close - in fact I wouldn't be surprised if everything else in the game won't add up to 1M points.
I said yesterday that Vapor Trail has "looping" music...well, shit, this is the real deal. Horrible sound samples obviously looping forever and ever.
There's a ton of terrible Engrish in there for the size of the game. Various characters say dumb things when they're defeated (see my post just above for part of one character's thing).
Also, apparently your commander is a frog.
Horrible game. Just when I start to think I've got a grip on what's in MAME, something like this shows up. Just fucking amazing.

All I know is that the white horse guy yells HAIL TO RUINZA when his continue times out...totally missing the context there, maybe the cabinet art explains it. At first I thought the frog was taunting me!TKGB_Mental_Gear wrote:I just wish I knew their names or the reason why they are the Eight Forces and what they are fighting for.
Figures the guy with a white cloak and a damn chandelier in his ship would attack with giant silver spoons...

Holy crap, the world record in this game is 64 million. Frankly I'm surprised people have finished the game at all, the last stage is impossible, let alone what its like in the 2nd loop.
By the way, the characters names are partially revealed in the default highscore list (ninja = Tsubasa, guy with wine and chandeliers = Duke) Full names and backstory I'm sure are revealed in the flyers or whatever. Speaking of flyers, I once saw the eight forces one somewhere on the net (not at arcadeflyers) but cant remember where, I shall locate it!
Nothing beats 1,000,000 value medals. 10k medals are for pansies.

Despite having an S in the english title, the katakana for the name merely says 'Eight Force" so its probably some kind of sequel/side story to Star Force or Final Star Force.

I didn't play Star Force until recently...I have to say the music themes are strikingly similar there. Star Force plays better, I think.Macaw wrote:Despite having an S in the english title, the katakana for the name merely says 'Eight Force" so its probably some kind of sequel/side story to Star Force or Final Star Force.
