yes, the extra(?) version is crazy.

what i find funny tho is how much people bash the PSX version, and how almost no one played both.

I've played both right after the other, and I can say without a doubt that the Saturn version is leaps and bounds better than the PS1 version.

No one is doubting that the sat version is worse, the biggest question here is rather that there obviously are two different modes in the ps version, one hard and the other one not. Which one is similar to the one on sat?

so what exactly are the differences? colors? big deal. slowdown? hardly any on the ps version as i said, besides a small part of 3rd stage. resolution and stuff? well maybe, but since souky almost runs on a saturn based hardware or something, its quite logical that the sat port is better in this aspect.
the thing is, people bash the psx version like its the plague, and none ever makes a decent overview of both, to say what the differences are.
the psx version apparenly has a whole extra version of the game (which i prefer to the normal game, that may vouch in its favor.
not to mention the extra version doesnt have an extra ship nor movies, but well.

and cheap? the extra ship sucks.
basically, you being a self admited saturn "hardcore" fanboy (i dont mean that as a compliment), id take anything you say with a grain of salt.

Neon got another SN? Jesus...

Fine, here are the differences:

PS1 version has a lot more slowdown, and this is very apparent when you play one after the other. You say the PS1 version has little to none... ever been to stage 4? Hell, I even noticed some in the first and second levels. The Saturn only has slowdown in like, 2 spots and its incredibly brief.

Saturn version has crisper graphics and just looks better.

PS1 version has movies of bosses exploding.

PS1 version has an extra ship.

PS1 version has an "extra mode", which I've never seen and never looked for in the Saturn version, so for all I know they both might have it.

Saturn version sounds a bit better than the PS1 version (at least, in my opinion and in the opinion of my friend who owns the PS1 version).

And to me, the Saturn version had better controls, but thats probably due to a better controller. So... yeah.

And feel free to take that with a whole salt shaker, I don't really care, this was the exact same opinion of dude who had brought it over. Though I think he argued in favor of the extra ship and movies.

well thats lots better, thank you :)

as i said, the extra mode is what would make me buy it over the sat (considering sat doesnt have it, yet to be confirmed) because i enjoyed playing it a lot more than the normal version.

id like to try the saturn version before buying, but its unlikely a shop would let me.

Thats what shmupmeets are for.

I'll sit down and see if I can find an "extra" mode in there tonight if I feel like I have time (Trizeal... oh sweet Trizeal... get here quickly). But as far as I know it isn't.

What all is in it pray tell? I have seen what I THOUGHT was a Score Attack mode, but since I have the OG pressing the screen goes wacko when I try to play it.

There is a score attack mode in the Saturn version of Souky, and a pretty nice one too. The thing records your top 5 (IIRC) scores for each stage, and I think it might even record a separate set of scores for separate difficulty levels too (I'm not positive on that one though). In any case, I guess it helps to explain why Souky takes up such a ridiculous amount of memory space.

well as i said the screen size changes and the game is harder.

but i suspect something, maybe this "extra" mode is only present on the otokuyo version? would make sense.

I have the Otokuyo version and have not as of yet found any sort of "extra" mode in it, just some unlockable extra options.

Which one is the otokyo version? I had the one that costed 5800yen and it had an extra hard mode (which I of course thought was the normal one) and a HELL OF ALOT slowdown. Level 4 was so nasty (then again, on the hard mode) that I dropped the game and decided to get the sat version. Which I will, one day.

"Otokuyo" is just the re-release of the Saturn version of Souky: it's the same game, except that it includes a playable demo of Battle Garegga on the disc. I own it, and slowdown is not an issue for it...maybe you're thinking of the PS version? It has some kind of "subtitle" too, but I forget what it was exactly.

For Saturn

NTSC-J 17,669,642 All Swordfish

Been waiting for this one. I was putting this game into the trade/sell box and realized I should beat it before getting rid of it, so I went at it today. No missed to the last boss and flubbed around a bit, but I still won. Saiyonara, Souky, fuckin floaty controls piece a shit.

The more I play it, the more I appreciate the coolness of this game. It's a masterpiece.

It is fantastic, I just wish I could get the hang of it. The stage 3 boss is a nightmare for me, I have to bomb the fuck outta it then its normally plain sailing to midway through stage 6.

SamIAm - 8,164,060 - Stage 5 - Saturn - Swordfish

Just started to play this one seriously. I've gotten a new high score ever time I've played it for about 6 runs now. Awesome game.

I have to ask, though, it says to set the difficulty on 4, which is where the Saturn version defaults, but IIRC the arcade default is 5. That's what I've set it. I hope you'll still post my score all the same ;)

SamIAm - 9,570,300 - Stage 6 - Saturn - Swordfish

Had to take a break for a while, but now I'm right back in the game. I really need to practice stage 5 some more, though. I can just about make it there without dying at all, but then all my lives vanish so fast it makes my head spin.

Do any of you Saturn players with high scores use the analog pad? I think I might experiment with it for a little while.

I'm not too sure if I can improve my score now... I've been getting around 25-26m over and over now, and the 11th bomb gives you 32k on the psx version, and so does the 12th and the 13th.

I'm happy with my score anyway. :)

DMC - 17,552,375 - All - Swordfish (sat)

Perhaps this would fit better in the strategy section, but here are some questions about the bomb bonus.

The 11th bomb and every surplus gives you a fine 600'000 bonus. But at few sessions I've had counted to only 7 bombs but with three times the big bonus. Why is that?
Also, I have one lifed the first three stages without bombing and been rewarded with the big bonus. But with less than 11 bombs. So there must be an alternative source to the big bonus? Or am I losing my mind? :?

Not much happening on this scoreboard... So I thought I'd give the game another go today, it didnt go too well. 1 lifed to stage 6 then lost all lives, then in the next game lost all lives in stage 5 bar one and managed to 1 life all the way to the final boss of stage 6 without bombs... then died.

Its too frustrating! On my next play i died on stage 3, then stage 1 the game after that. I know I can do this if I have a good run, its just not fun at all when this kind of thing happens!

Reached the very end boss twice again tonight, nae bombs though. I seem to be able to avoid the lockon and blue ball things, its when the bullet spread starts that I really need a bomb!

Slight score update too. 11,914,990. I think score seems to play a part in rank, notice this most with the first boss.
