Great work !

A possible suggestion : perhaps you can ask a few more questions, to really turn it into "FAQ", as in, here's your question, here's our answer.

For example, you could change the section on Superguns into

"Q: How can I play real arcade games on my TV ?"
"A: Use a 'supergun'"
and then give the whole explanation.

At the moment I think it's more a guide than a FAQ, and since it's fairly detailed (and thus long), perhaps people will not want to read about "superguns" if they have no idea what they are. And then they start a thread asking "how can I play arcade games on my TV", not realizing that the answer is in the faq, because, "hey, the faq is talking about superguns, whatever the hell that is, not about TVs". :)

I'm probably nitpicking here. Dunno, just playing "dumb user's advocate" -- supergun this, superplay that, whateVEr HWO DO U PLA?Y TEH TV #!#@@one

Or perhaps it can be split up ? One part is a forum guide (introduction, how to search, etc), some part is a glossary (explaining RGB), some part can be FAQ (how do I play on a TV)

But don't get me wrong, these are just some ideas. As it stands it's already awesome, again great stuff !

Just noticed that Dodonpachi is not on the PS1 list; since it's better (when played in tate and with wait on and with a decent pad) than the Saturn version and one of the PS1's best shmups it should be mentioned.

Since I've seen Ceph's remarks have been included in the FAQ (nice work, btw!), I would suggest:

-add a NES/Famicom section (Recca is always an hot topic and besides there is plenty of great shooting on the system. Also, a small Snes section might be considered, seeing how the system had more honorable mentions than the saturn in the 4th annual top 25.)

-add Thunderforce V to Saturn (it gets little love these days, but it's still arguably the best shmup specifically developed for the console)

-add Zanac Neo to PS1

-add R-Type Final to PS2 (again, one of the few developed-for games, should get more attention than half-assed ports)

(in general, you could consider to add some more platform specific games at the expense of "collections" like R-Types or Toaplan vol.1 which are pretty much a repetition of what's good in the arcade section, imho)

Edit:

Zach, you might want to add Irem's webpage and especially R-Type Official page to those links.

I would like to have a link added to the True tate in NA Raiden Project thread because ppl ask about it semi-frequently and it's annoying having to dig it up every time. I propose the link be added in the Tate section of the FAQ.

Most of the big games have Xenocide entries right?

Just link the relative forum thread to it at the bottom by way of a question.

IE - Battle Garegga review

Just link - BG ranking issues (here) -

They click, they find.. no search needed. At least if someone wants to add something it goes into one thread instead of 15 different ones

Mods would have to delete OT posts though.

I don't think we have any way to add things to the Xenocide entries. That's separate from the forum.

Maybe, but I think one of the admins took over from Malc, its only a simple little mod to each Xenocide entry and you'd only do about 20 of them at max.

We need a Xenocide link on the forum as well.. Almost everyone who comes here comes through that gateway so I think its a bit rude not to include a gateway back there.

Nope, malc is the only one who can update the main site. Bloodflowers just took over maintaining the forum.

Has anyone asked him for takeover rights? No disrespect to Malc but he needs to pass on the baton.

He doesn't wanna. Shmups.com is his baby and he still intends to return to it some day.

What if somebody made made their own legit shmups site from the ground up calling it like..."shmups.com arranged" or "shmups.com remix" made with the original content organization as a template, but the content was equal or greater than what is offered at the original real site. Assuming the site met expectations, would approval be considered to link to this forum as that new site's forum?

I think that'd be the least of problems to worry about if such a site is to be built. There's been talk of that shmupsWiki every now and then and nothing's ever come out of that. And of course dubbing the new site as the continuation of shmups.com would need the OK from malc to be morally just and official.

In any case, I don't see any problem with the forum being affiliated with another site like that, but I'm not the head honcho either so I can't make the official call.

I thought nothing came of that because nobody liked the idea of potentially faulty information getting on it since anybody can edit a wiki.
