Porco Rosso. Shmup fans should get a big kick out of it and its a great movie in it's own right.

IMO I feel that The Wings Of Honneamise is FAR superior to Akira. I've never seen Escaflowne.

Yeah, I was kind of "meh" on Akira, but I paid a good deal of money for my Honneamise DVD (this was back when $50 CDN for an anime DVD was "cheap")

Who remembers Voltes V ??? Or something like that... I know I watched it a long time ago and it's supposed to have a bit of a cult following... I don't remember it at all, but I read that the English version got horribly butchered (and wasn't even finished)

Castle of Cagliostro - i have a huge soft spot for anything Lupin and besides, its a great movie.

Emperors New Groove - the only modern, Disney animated movie i watch. hilarious, period. the little baby panther gets me every time.

depending how far you want to take that "animation" word. Jan Svankmajer's Alice was cool to look at (and incidentally, boring as fuck-all to watch

there are many that i am forgetting. i love animation so much, wanted to be an animator once. after that i wanted to be a Punch and Judy man (nods to the british). my life has been full of dream careers such as these.

Wow! I'm happy to eat humble pie on that one - now I've got a great book to find-thanks! I remember it being an episodic newspaper strip maybe in the Daily Express in the UK, and definitely printed before the movie was announced. try as I might, I can't find a thing about it on the net though - sorry.

Man, it would be nice to see even a panel or two of that. Yeah, the book is pretty good, sort of representative of this weird late 60/early 70's movement in US children't literature, where a lot of books were more thoughtful and often had downer endings. Take Julie of the Wolves for instance--there is no happiness in that book. The girl pretty much writes a poem at the end for thei death of her own culture and every thing she loves. Holy shit.

I cant see how any film could be better than Akira!

Can only find a foreign region version of Wings Of Honneamise so I might have to pass for now on it, definetly intrigued though.

I became a total anime head when I had broadband and downloaded shit loads including cowboy bebop series which is fantastic... But alas for reasons outside of my control i lost broadband. Its way to addictive that shit anyway

Same here. Not much thinking until the very end I thought, just a great cyberpunk environment. The manga was more vibrant IMO.

Akira is absolutely stuffed with incredible scenes/symbolism(sp?) and images that speak books all the way through the film. Ive watched it almost a hundred times, possibly more, and its only grown on me with every viewing. The creativity in the artwork is incredible, and the detail.... the colour schemes.... I think I'm in love

It's a great film, but I thought they condensed it too much compared to the books. If they had made it six hours long or so, it would have been much better. I'd love it if they redid the movie as a mini series or something (with the same art style, even the 80's style CG) and added everything from the manga. That would probably be far too expensive to ever happen, but it would be absolutely incredible.

The first time I watched it was in elementary school. By the end, 80% of the class was bawling.

Though nothing tops Chicken Run. I can't believe I rented that movie three times! Mel Gibson + British chickens = Winner.

Balto is worth mentioning as it was released after Lion King, but didn't include any of the usual Disney crapola: No preachy message that I remember, it was based on a real story, it incorporated live-action at the start, and more importantly, no freaking musical numbers every 17 minutes.

I haven't seen All Dogs go to Heaven. I must turn in my furry badge, faux tail, ears and paws.

Anyone else love The Snowman? Simply beautiful. Sometimes the most basic stories are the ones that really get to you. Though I imagine much of my appreciation of it lies in my fond childhood memories of it. Easily my favorite movie to watch during Christmas time, other than Gremlins that is.

The Iron Giant is still one of my favorite animated movies. Probably the best movie with Vin Diesel's voice too. That movie really took me by surprise. I didn't expect it to be as deep as it was when I first heard of it.

I love Rankin-Bass specials. They actually made a theaterical movie (or I think it was, if I remember correctly), but I forgot the name of it. I'm not sure if it's any good either.

I was tempted to mention that one, but I think it sort of puts all its eggs in one basket...the artwork and minimalist atmospherics are amazing, but the characters are largely stock and the plot is, of course, ridiculous. Of course, in my opinion the visuals alone are enough of an excuse to overlook the faults of the show; I sort of felt the same way about "Robots" when I saw it.

Last Exile's atmosphere is definitely suited to those with a certain semi-old-fashioned taste though. Not a fan of it myself (man, the villainess is wacked out) but it's widely praised.

Wings Of Honneamise starts off a little slow, but is definitely one of the better animated movie's I've seen.

What do you guys think of Blood: the Last Vampire? It keeps coming on Starz movie channel, and I keep missing it.

My favorite Miyazaki film is Castle in the Sky, as for favorite animated movie of all time..huh, I dunno. Favorite action-oriented one could possibly be VHD: Bloodlust. Or even Ninja Scroll (which I disliked at first, but now my primal instincts are beginning to like all the blood n stuff).

Have you seen the Ninja Scroll TV series? Some of the most messed up character designs in anime...

My fave Ghibli film is probably Nausicaa although really only for the action rather than art or philosophy.

MOVIE: Definitely the Incredibles, but that was mentioned already. If you like "silly", Animalympics is a pretty cult classic, too.

there was also this animated Lego move from my childhood that was pretty cool. i don't remember the title, but it had a racing scene, gymnastics scene, and others.
