The Shooting Star looks a lot like one of the bosses from the original Twinbee ... 4th boss if I remember correctly.

You know this game has a Special mode - was it considered for this competition? If yes, why it was discarded in favor of normal mode?

Special mode has suicide and revenge bullets on every enemy, and it would make it second-loop difficulty.

But a saw a video of soemone doing 1.2 million on 1st stage on Special, and he wasn't even juggling bell properly.

I guess the scoring in this mode is different

Yup, special mode has multiplyers on bells and fruits.
Btw there is a 2nd loop in TWBY normal mode ? (or was it just an expression, "2nd loop difficulty" ?)

Hmm, no it doesn't seem to have. It's a little harder, bosses last a little longer, and there are some more bullets here and there... But definitely not suicide and revenge at every kill. At least, that's how I see it playing the first two stages and scoring 2m400k circa (score seems to be x2 on every item).

For a change, you know. :)

Bosses also have different and more random patterns compared to Normal.

The effects of rank actually become visible in Special, as well, and Stage 5 is actually harder than Stage 4.

Certain people also are having a hard enough time with this game as it is.

Yeah... Normal was the best choice of course. I guess what I was really asking is what's the point of a "special" mode in which every point is doubled and difficulty is second-loop like. Couldn't they just make it the actual second loop?

Arvandor wrote:It is pretty confusing at first, and you DO have to learn what to watch for.

But really, it's not TOO different from a modern manic. You have to learn how to avoid certain patterns in manics, much in the same way you have to learn what to avoid in say Twinbee Yahhoo. The trick is that the manics make you FEEL like you have a chance when you haven't learned a pattern yet, whereas in Twinbee it's hard to "wing it" through certain spots your first time.

I think it's all just mind-games. You're being tricked into thinking Twinbee is more frustrating =D

Actually you might be right.

Feeling a bit more patient today, not to mention filled with caffiene, went and gave it another shot....

This game is ALOT easier than I'd thought before.

Still annoying, but easy. Fortunately for my sanity, 2 seems to be the only level that does the side-scrolling bit. And the bosses are cake.

So I did end up posting a score, around 1400000.

But I've still barely played the game, (probably only my 4th time through, if that), so it could be better.

Note to self: dont try out new shmups when lacking in patience.

lol at Salamander 2 making next year's 2nd place poll. Section Z 0-chance games return.

Also, will 2nd place in 2nd place week return for the 2nd 2nd place week next year?

Yeah, I thought of that....I don't really know.
I had one idea that will probably happen and would work pretty easily. Originally I thought just throw Omega Fighter in there to laugh at it getting 3 votes total again even though that's the hip-new-thing to worship right now...

Makes sense though, doesn't it?

The nubs will want to play Dodonpachi for Famous Manic and will vote something else into first during Second Place Week voting; while Seibu Week will be filled with Raiden votes because "I can play it on the PSX! Yay me!".

Sadly, the chances of us getting anything decent to play during Seibu, Second Place and Famous Manic look slim.

Kinda hoping GW will get 2nd this year so we'll have a 20% chance of playing a modern shooter that isn't Cave or Raizing one year.

I suppose there is a reason why the depressingly dull Raiden was made eligible for vote instead of its (non-DX) sequel... So what is it?

It's the only one that's properly emulated outside of VP1 and the RFs.
Raiden DX is mangled in MAME (unloadable) and I assume the same for Raiden II.

MAME emulates neither of the Raiden 2 hardware games properly due to encryption on the graphics.

I see. I remember not being able to play Raiden II in mame now... It was years ago, I thought they had fixed the issue by now (in the meantime, stuff like Sala 2 and Radiant became playable iirc).

I think you're exaggerating that effect a bit (maybe it's strategic to keep your expectations low and don't get an harsh delusion if really Raiden is chosen). Out of sixty or so scores for TBY, I see something like ten console players. Many of these probably play it on console just for comfort, and could play it / would've voted for it anyway. In fact, I think the mame-handicapped guys around should be less than five.

Sure, TBY won over Sala 2 for less than five votes, but come on... The first Raiden can't be that attractive.

Don't forget the one-time 6-10 minute wait times for the Seibu SPI programs to flash, and the resulting not knowing what to do after the flashing finishes for a lot of people. (Hint: turn JP1 dipswitch to ON when this happens.)

I trust DJI or Edge to tell people how to boot these games, but the one-time inconvenience can make all the difference.

Not to mention that the SPI games have been given 2 years exposure tops to the members on this forum.

Might want to note that you need a version of MAME that will save NVRAM, which is what is needed to bypass the bootup sequence on subsequent loads.

Therefore, WolfMAME is out of the question.

How many roads must a man walk down
Before you call him a man?
Yes, 'n' how many ROMs a MAME must run
Before you accept it into STGT?
Yes, 'n' how many times must the cannon balls fly
Before they're forever banned?
The answer, my friend, is blowin' in the wind,
The answer is blowin' in the wind.

Don't mind me. Just a couple of pints more than I should've.

My general out look on life.
Expect the worst and when it does happen it is tolerable. When it better, than that is bonus.

I highly doubt that Raiden original will come close in winning. Expect it to go down like Gradius III.
This forum is fill with folks who are like score system and Raiden Fighter Jet is the best option for those. Most unfortunate that Raiden DX is not accessible as I am feel that would be the best choice for score em up.

Raiden is too cut and dry for shmups.com members. Raiden Fighters Jet is offer the score system that shmups.com community is loath.
