I agree with Sword. The constant complaining does make things less fun, not only for the competition, but for choosing a game as well. Also, I thought the point of STGT was to try and get high scores.

You wonder if Garegga will win the vote given that 1) people are aware of how hard it is; and 2) Dodonpachi might be in the vote.

Which concerns me. Is Dodonpachi going to be shortlisted if Progear wins second place week? Given that Sexy Paro was moved to Konami Week to ensure that there wouldn't be two Konami games in the tournament shortlists (re Edge/DJI's comments), some consistency should be shown in this regard.

This is shmupsforum, people complain anyway.
People still put in good scores during the playing week, regardless.

1) Reading STs is hard (serious, it probably is for Garegga since nobody is going to learn that in a week, as opposed to every other potential entry in FMW)
2) Depends on whether the amount of people who really, truly prefer its system outnumber the people who favor the other games in this competition

It's a hard thing to stop, you're still going to have people who complain about even (good game) being chosen for Hidden Gem week just because it's not one of the things they came to like seeing on a website or magazine.

They're not going to complain about what they're good at/what they find fun learning/what they recognize. For most participants it's primarily the last one. The complaining is worse because it's an official competition, despite the point of the competition is that you might have to/get to play games you don't even like.

Shit, Sexy Parodius is my 2nd worst game (in skill) this week and I'd rather play it in a competition because it's a game i'd like to learn.

edit to self: don't make a post right after waking up, tons of atrocities in english that needed to be fixed

Soo.... Complain is fine and dandy, but I'd want to know if there is anyone out there who didn't know / didn't usually play this game, discovered it thanks to STGT and fell in love.

That's just because I'd like to read something different for once.

But thanks anyway for the input. Omega Fighter is indeed a game I'd like to play.

I am enjoying it, though I already have the Deluxe Pack for Saturn like for 4 years... so it's hardly a new game to me.

So what was all this about again? Oh yeah.

So anyway, I sat there thinking How in the hell am I gonna get this paper done in five hours?, ya know? I mean, it's bad enough when they're due the next day, but this class ending at 3 and it's lab starting at 8 is just ludicrous. A ten page paper on the physics of a static, charged and rotating sigularities just wasn't gonna happen in five hours. If it was three or four pages, maybe... but not ten.

So I called up Sarah. Remember her? The chick with the mole on her left tit that looks like Albania? Yeah... her. Anyway, I called her up and asked what she thought of the assignment. She said it was gonna be easy and that she already had the first six pages done. All I said was, "You gotta be fuckin' kidding me." She prattled on for a bit and I asked her for some help because while I had the rotating sigularity physics down, I kept getting the static and charged ones confused. So, after a little convincing, she agreed to meet me at the college library at 6:30.

So I got there and waited for her outside the library. When she showed up at 7, she apologized for being late and I asked her to walk with me for a bit. We talked and made our way around the back of the library. I asked her if she had her paper done. When she said yes, I bent down, picked up a baseball sized rock, and cracked her in the forehead with it. It took a few blows to the back of her skull, but she eventually stopped twitching. I dug her paper out of her backpack, and gave her a kick in the throat for being late. I mean, she was late. Talk about bullshit ya know?

Anyway, I went into the library and used one of the computers there to retype the paper and put my name on it. I think the paper'll get at least an 85%... it should after all the work I put into getting it done, right?

I hope that's not your subtle way to tell me that I should've voted Salamander 2, Commander in chief!

At least Star Force had some shooting game purity to fall back on. The Cleopatra bonus was total crap, there was too much repetition, etc. But it still felt like an arcade game.

Twinbee has basically every horrible element of bloated 16-bit console shooters. Disregarding playability for graphics being the worst offense. This game belongs on an SNES. To be fair there are a few dozen Super Nintendo shooters I would rather play.

I don't think I consider it that bad, but it does feel distinctly un-arcade. Probably because of the 4:3 aspect ratio and bloated graphics. Everything is too big.

It's a vert though, and for that I like it better then most Konami games.

Freeform seems a little generous, esp. with a comparison to Guwange. All they had to do was scatter some clouds throughout the stage and let you handle whatever crap results from it, between bell-color enemies and sudden-appearing huge ships. Throwing a bunch of clouds at the beginning of stage 1... hm, OK? Learning curve?

Eh, I'm getting used to this game. I don't hate it anymore than any other Konami game now. I knew when I signed up that I was signing up to play games I probably wouldn't want to play, so I don't see any point in griping. It's a pretty good game as far as cute em ups go.

Well, there is talk brewin' on the IRC on what weapon combinations can determine what and when the initial color change occurs. I figured somebody will be on to something later in the week. Then there's whatever Sik knows...

At least technically you don't really have to memorize and just pace your firing and deal with the surroundings as the bell drops. you don't like the situation, re-pace your firing and try again.
freeform.

"game-long chaining" were your words with Guwange...that probably held in my brain. But then more accurate it's like Raizing-esq medal chaining more than a guwange comparison. But without the one-time drop. Then if you don't let it drop-to-collect soon, you're gonna fuck yourself with too much juggling.

Dunno. I see the similarities to the games that are worshipped, and try to understand why those would be pedestal'd while Yahhoo totally hated.

...but if this were a year ago, Rando would be yelling at me for tryin' to rationalize the forum.
I have learned that the forum as a whole does hate everything....I guess I should remind myself more often :(

I don't think its any one reason as to why those games are put onto a pedestal - their overall presentation is what I think draws people in. For me it's just that Twinbee feels really "chunky." The big ship, destracting backgrounds and general disorder onscreen are what really turn me off to it, not just the scoring system. I'd like any scoring system as long as the game underneath is engaging to me.

EDIT: By the way, DJ, how are you liking the game so far?

YEAH!

I've learned a lot of things about scoring in this game, but I am sharing it just with my teammates (Considering how pissed I am about something I'll post at the score thread). At the end of week I may tell people.

Problem is that I am sucking at survival right now..., Level 4 is killing me too fast

BrianC wrote: However, I feel the process for choosing the games should be done differently. I have no idea how Gradius III got chosen over Xexex or Gradius II. Four Gradius style games is a bit redundant, even if one of them does have a different power up system. Something needs to be done about the disparity between old school and new school and console games too.
Hmmm... I am all open for new ideas. I am currently thinking if it might be a good idea to reduce the number of games on each week's poll. 4 or 3 games maybe. Then again I'd imagine there might also be a lot of bitching about the games on the poll as many people would not see their expected favourties up there. On the other hand with only 3 choices, only the possibly most promising choices would it up on the poll. So that no matter which of these gets chosen: We'll have a good game for competition. Inputs?

Why these games weren't shortlisted:
Gradius 2: Multilooping and too easy would lead to a marathon game for the top players.

Xexex: To unpopular, Seeing this getting no love in Hidden Gem Week, I'd doubt it would have a chance against other "famous" Konami games. Well at least I thought that Konami's games where still fairly popular, but it seems that the majority don't like horizontal classics anymore.
