Favorite shoot 'em up developer (past or present)?

Post by MathU »

Irem will always hold a special place in my heart. Just about every one of their games featured something innovative or unique in it--with the exception of that blatant Raiden rip-off, Fire Barrel. From Cosmic Cop to Mystic Riders, they were a real gem of creativity. It was such a shame to see the end of the R-Type series (Delta).
Of course, that's just an opinion.

Seibu, then Raizing. Both companies during their mid-later years (for Raizing, subtract Dimahoo) displayed the perfect balance between risk and reward. Hugely unbalanced ships, though, but just pretend the bad ships don't exist.

Seibu Kaihatsu. Even their most generic game does so much right.

There's also a special place in my heart for Warashi.

Raizing; then oldschool Seibu; then Technosoft; with Irem, Konami and Cave tied for fourth.

Technosoft without question.

They're best known for their fantastic 16bit and 32bit shmups, but their translation and reworking of Devil Crash (Dragon's Fury) made an already good game better, and Herzog Zwei was a blast (and the first RTS game).

Among the remaining top five, in no particular order, would likely be Seibu Kaihatsu, Irem, Taito, and Compile. If we were to go top ten, G.Rev, Treasure, Konami, Toaplan, and Renovation (for bringing over Telenet and Wolf Team shmups) would fill it up.

In order

Raizing
Psykio
Treasure
Cave

I love a ton of developers who make/made shooters, but these four stand out the most for me.

Taito, Toaplan, Technosoft. If I had access to/money for PCBs I might say Cave.

I can probably pick two, Cave and Psikyo... pretty much yin and yang of this genre. Usually depends on my mood.

That's a good question. I was actually thinking about that today.

Probably gonna have to say(in no real order):

Treasure
Cave
Raizing

Those for overall quality, and then these for a few titles.

Irem(Delta and III)
Technosoft(TF III and IV, Hyperduel)

Irem! R-Type is definitely my favorite shooter series, and their other games like X Multiply and In the Hunt are no slouches either.
