Amiga and Atari ST only I think. Did the C64 have the shmup stages? The Genesis version didn't, and the SNES was a completely different game. But yes, those are my favorite shmup levels in a non-shmup game. Very Aero Blasters.

Oh and don't forget Xain'd Sleena! It's a classic.

The Genesis only has Turrican, Mega Turrican (the same game as the Amiga Turrican III), and an altered version of Turrican II named Universal Soldier. The altered version is missing the shmup stages. They were actually replaced by three new non-shmup stages. boo!

The two SNES games are called Super Turrican and Super Turrican II and are SNES exclusives. Telling from screens, it looks like Super Turrican II does have a shmup stage in it, though.

I played both Universal Soldier and Amiga Turrican 2 back-to-back in those days and the only difference was that "US" was missing those brief shmup stages, had inferior Z80 music, and had a few sprites lamely repainted. But effectively Universal Soldier should be considered a full port of Turrican 2, otherwise. (IMO) ...since all the secrets and stuff were intact.

One more to add. The terrible GBA game "Star Wars: Flight Of The Falcon" has an unlockable side-scrolling shmup in it. You fly the Millennium Falcon shooting down waves of Tie Fighters against a simple scrolling starfield. You have one life, with an energy bar and a large hitbox. You shoot down Imperial Shuttles for powerups, and the powerups give you things like wingmen in X-Wings that follow you around like the multiples/options in Gradius.

I think you got Kirby's Dreamland GB b/w confused with Kirby's Adventure NES. The final boss in the original Kirby's Dreamland is not a shmup boss. Kirby's Dreamland, the one I mentioned in a previous post, the one without the special powers from enemies, does have a shmup level, though.
Oops.....

I meant, Kirby's Dreamland 3(Snes). It's final boss is a shmup boss.

Ultraverse: Prime on the SCD had alternating beat-em-up and shmup levels.

Also, Zero Divide actually has a bonus shmup minigame.

Just to give more details on "King Galaxian" level of Pac Man World.

Your fly your ship in a 3D perspective, like Silpheed. You are flying in the space. The enemies are 3D models based on the Galaxian enemies. It starts very easy, but it gets a little harder late (Not all that hard).

Then you get to fly over some terrain, which have laser walls coming up to hit you, so you have to dodge them. At this point , lots of enemies are shooting at you. It never gets too hard, but it's cool enough anyway

Then the boss ("King Galaxian" is actually a "boss" level") is that green enemy from Galaga (The one that captures you), in a very cool 3D model. He even has the "attract beam" weapon.. he attracts you, swallowm then spit .

The boss has 4 "hit spots", and you have to destroy each one to beat it. At every hit spot destroyed, his attacks gets harder. The last "attack" is actually a bit difficult, you have lots of big bullets coming from every direction. I lost 5 lives to get past it :) (Everytime you die, you get back to the beggining of the boss)

There's a part in Jojo's Bizarre Adventure for the PS where your characters "stands" have to go inside a guys body to kill something. It's like a shmup. Awsome game by the way. They should have just done away with the fighting and made the whole game crazy minigames.

Dolphin Blue's underwater areas are practically horizontal shmups.

Doomsday Zone in Sonic 3 and Knuckles is very horizontal shmup-like, except you don't have weapons.

I just remembered the Space Invaders-esque game you could buy in Super Mario RPG, I think that'd technically count...

The late dreamcast japanese RPG/simulation game Segagaga features a shmup stage. Intrestingly enough, BGM music for the stage is a song called "Steel Squad" which I think was a homage to Thunder Force 4's "Metal Squad" as they both sounded very similar and the person who composed "Steel Squad" also composed for TF4's soundtrack.

I have it on good authority that the upcoming Xbox RPG "Jade Empire" will have a shmup minigame. Screenshots suggest that it's fairly sophisticated, although ICBW.

I don't know the game very well but I seem to recall that Air Fortress (NES) is either a non-shmup with shmup sections or a non-shmup with shmup sections.

Great game. This jump`n shooter is technically and gameplaywise excellent. One of my all time faves. On of the shmuppy levels seems to be inspired by the Gradius speed sections, the other is shmupping in a maze. I thinks it never got an snes release. The snes got Super Turrican 1 and 2 afaik, which differ both from the original Turrican 2. For all those console only gamers I can recommend Mega-Turrican (Genesis). No shmuip levels there, but it`s an excellent game (Turrican 3 amiga is the only other version around).

Edit: I should read the thred till the end before posting, sorry. When I found one of my faves mentioned I quick hit the "quote" button so I missed that others corrected it before

Interesting. There are GB, NES (if I remember correctly), and Atari 7800 versions of this game too. The 7800 one is called Tower Toppler and the GB and NES ones (which I'm not sure even exists) are called Castlean (or some similar name). Do the other versions have the shmup levels?

They are in the C64 original of the game and also in the Amiga version.

There was a hockey game on the NES that had the first stage of Gradius as a minigame during the halftime intermission. Can't remember the name of the game though.

Mystical Ninja on SNES also had the first stage of Gradius, while one of the sequels had the second stage of Xexex. Both were accessible from the "arcade game" shop, hidden somewhere within the RPG-ish sections. There was only one such shop in each game IIRC.

I think Nintendo should make a Kirby shmup, every game he's been in has a mini-shmup level.

I just scanned through the thread and didn't see it, so I can't believe no one's mentioned Kid Icarus. The last level Pit equips the relics he collected from the dungeon bosses to defeat Medusa in a very basic side scroll stage. Evidently the manner of flight was changed between the Japanese and North American releases - iirc you had to continually "flap" to stay aloft in the Famicom Disc version.

Magic Knight Rayearth on Saturn also finishes up by putting the heroines into a vertical shmup.

Might be borderline, but I enjoyed The Red Star for PS2. Combo beat 'em up / shoot 'em up, and lots of fun for multiplayer coop. Each stage's boss fires out hundreds of bullets in a danmaku-style battle, while you dodge and try to kill the boss with your puny gun. It's reminiscent of Cannon Spike for Dreamcast, but very shmuppy as well, especially the bullet patterns.
