I want to play Radio Allergy badly.
I really enjoy Chaos Field and everyone says Radio Allergy is even better. Its only port system I own is a Gamecube and the English release got canned earlier this summer. They had the localization and bugs worked out and everything and the game was ready to ship, but O~3 Entertainment decided it wouldn't be worth it at the last minute. If I import it I'll have to buy a freeloader too. Many people have speculated about an English Wii port (possibly combined with Crow, which is definitely being worked on) because the game is already pretty much finished. Should I wait for a possible Wii port or jump on this while I still can?

Of course, that's just an opinion.

Here's a silly idea. Why not get a Dreamcast for let's say 15 bucks or something and get Karous, the sequel for a presumably arcade perfect port.

Work it out.

Why bother with some potential future Wii port when you can play it now?MathU wrote:I really enjoy Chaos Field and everyone says Radio Allergy is even better. And, if the highscore thread is any indication of what would have been the final US release of Radirgy, then O~3 screwed around with the game's scoring system.
Also, I kinda agree with D. I find it odd that someone would be a fan of this genre and not own a PS2 and/or DC.

The final port and English release of Chaos Field was arguably the best (slowdown all gone, high score saving, good extra mode). I hear people have memory card issues with the Gamecube Radilgy, and the Dreamcast version doesn't even save high scores. The English release was to have an extra mode too.
My Dreamcast is dead, but that's besides the point. Not everyone has the time and money for every console on the market.
Now, back to my original question please. Should I import the Gamecube Radilgy and buy a preloader (barely even know what that is, and don't know where to start with importing) or hold out for a no doubt superior English Wii release (where I can also understand everything)?

It's exactly the same as the Japanese GC port, Chaos Field Expanded, except that the handful of in-game text has been translated to English.MathU wrote:The final port and English release of Chaos Field was arguably the best (slowdown all gone, high score saving, good extra mode).
Also, I never found the removal of slowdown to be all that great. The Expanded Mode wasn't that good, and I never found the control to be anywhere near as tight and responsive as the DC version.
NTSC-J and NTSC-U/C GC savefiles don't seem to like each other for some weird reason. Simply buy a seperate memory card for any imports you plan on playing on your GC (assuming it's NTSC-U/C).MathU wrote:I hear people have memory card issues with the Gamecube Radilgy, and the Dreamcast version doesn't even save high scores. The DC version of Radirgy does indeed save high-scores. The DC versions of Chaos Field and Karous do not (sadly).
The US GC release of Radirgy features the same content as the Japanese version (O~3 simply changed the name of Manpuku Mode to Full Belly Mode).
2 consoles does not constitute every console on the market. Not to mention that neither of them is very expensive (hell, DC's are a dime a dozen). But whatever.MathU wrote: My Dreamcast is dead, but that's besides the point. Not everyone has the time and money for every console on the market.
The scoring in the un-released US GC version of Radirgy appears to be increased by a factor of 10 over all of the Japanese versions (NAOMI, DC, GC and PS2). We have inquired with the one member of the forum who managed to snag a copy of this to present some video so the rest of us can see what exactly is going on.MathU wrote:What do you mean by this?Kiken wrote:And, if the highscore thread is any indication of what would have been the final US release of Radirgy, then O~3 screwed around with the game's scoring system.

Radirgy Hi ScoresMathU wrote:What do you mean by this?Kiken wrote:And, if the highscore thread is any indication of what would have been the final US release of Radirgy, then O~3 screwed around with the game's scoring system.
A fellow who has a beta/proto of USA GCN Radio Allergy posted his score and it is not consistent with the scores obtain from the retail versions of the game. A critical error and sacralige if the score system was altered - especially if the main concept and draw of the game (and all Milestone game for the matter) is it score mechanic.

GCN region mod
I did this last week, super easy mod with only 2 wires and a toggle switch. I also put my switch in the back so I still have full access to all the expansion ports on the bottom.
Cheaper and more reliable than a Freeloader, if you can't do this yourself then get a friend to do it for you. If you're worried about busting your system, GameCubes are also getting dirt cheap (about the same as Dreamcasts but much more common in my parts) in the 2nd hand market. You could buy one for only slightly more than a Freeloader and even hardwire it to JP using just a single wire soldered on both ends.
Also way back, maybe last year, the GCN-JP version of Radirgy was on sale at play-asia for $25 or so. Keep an eye out, maybe it will go on sale again.

Aha, found it again:

To those of you who've played this, do you think it's really worth the effort for me to get a FreeLoader, extra memory card, and import it?

As with anything else, it depends on what sort of shmup you prefer. Radirgy is definitely a "quirky" one, which plays a ways differently from a "traditional" shmup if you try to score well (about the closest parallel I can think of is Giga Wing, and even that's a bit of a stretch). Presentation, while unique, is nothing spectacular, and you'll be doing relatively little shooting in favor of slashing and reflecting. If you're into this sort of "oddball" gameplay I think it'd be a good game to try to get ahold of - if you're more of a traditionalist, you'd probably be best-served saving up for something else.
